I’ve always wondered myself, especially with FFXIII coming out what I actually prefer in a Final Fantasy. FFVII came out and it was the first real departure from traditional fantasy, what with technology and the sort. Of course there was a little bit in IV, but then came VIII where the techno scale went up another couple notches. With XIII coming out … makes me think that they might be moving in the wrong direction with it. Sure it looks nice, but .. what do you think? Should they stick with traditional fantasy or is the sci-fi look something you’d be more interested in?

Oh, god, Medieval-Fantasy styled Final Fantasy games are so much more appealing and enjoyable to play, in my experience.

In any ways, I’m more a fan of that genre of Fantasy, wether it be in videogames or books. =)

i agree with that as well. I’ve always had more of a liking to the fantasy side of things, which is why I think I’ll like XII more. (even though they have super high techno airships, the overall feeling is sword and shield technology)

I liked IX. I really did. Alot more than VIII and well.. VII was that anomoly. I just loved that one to death.

Yes, not that technology bothers me in the whole of a game like Final Fantasy, it’s just the futuristic aesthetics, like in FFVIII which I find quite unappealing.

Well.. leave it to Squaresoft to be able to implement swords, guns and robots into the same timeline and actually do it WELL.

I’m just worried that FFXIII will be more Sci-Fi rather than the Final Fantasy that we all have come to love. Right now I’m more excited about FFXII than XIII.

Pretty much what Trent said. If Square can incorporate "machinery" into the game but not make it really futuristic, I’m all for it. IX is a good example. It had airships and the lot, but didn’t wreck the tradition like VIII did.

agreed… even VII was a major departure from normal fantasy titles. However I thoroughly enjoyed it. hmm

who cares, as long as it’s good. ^^

but for me, medieval-styled ff’s are cooler, than sci-fi, but sci-fi is not that bad.

I prefer castles and towers, not Shin-Ra buildings and Gardens.

Hmmm I’m not sure what I prefer, but I like a mixture of both I suppose. As long as its a whole new world… Even though I’ve only played a handful of the ff games they are all really unique to me… (Um what am I trying to say here?)
I suppose it doesn’t really matter to me as long as the story is good! 😀

What he said. Besides, it’s called Final Fantasy for a reason. 😀

Fantasy is more apposite for the series.

I have always felt that the cool FF’s were FANTASY in nature. What I always thought was kinda neat was to have a nearly totally fantasy FF and then when you get farther in the story, .. machinery pops up out of no where and you find out it’s some ancient technology or whatever. Kinda like in FFIV.
