I’ve spent an hour or more capturing monsters in omega ruins now and only encountered machea once. Is there a certain place where they tend to be more common or will i have to spend ages just running about?

They should be somewhere in the basement level that is accessible after defeating Ultima Weapon. When you defeat Omega Weapon, the encounters will always occur at the center of the circular areas and never on the slopes between them. Machea should be somewhere. If not, backtrack to where you first encountered Machea and run around from there.

Pretty much anywhere. If you can find it after 15 encounter, then just save, and reload.
