If you’re having a lot of trouble with Atma, go back and level up a little bit. Or something. If you have stuff that protects you from Earth-element attacks (like Gaia Gear), equip it. You might also want to try to use Reflect spells to reflect its spells back at it. Or you could have Celes use Runic on some of its spells, too. In that case, you’d have to use potions rather than cure to heal yourself.

And just whack away at it with your strongest attacks.

If you REALLY want to find out what the World of Ruin is, just keep playing.

But since I’m nice and all… 😛 I’ll spoil it somewhat.

The World of Ruin is what happens when you take two cups of Gestahl, three cups of Kefka, add in a few teaspoons of Esperish magic, mix it all around, then sift out the excess Gestahl, fry it up, and unleash it on the world.

Or, bluntly put: The World of Ruin is what happens after you get off the Floating Continent. Basically Kefka succeeds in destroying the world and changing it forever. And yes, half of the game takes place in the World of Ruin. But a good part of the World of Ruin is also technically optional.

How much time is between the moving of the Statues by Kefka and Celes waking up in the World of Ruin? One year?

Yep, one year.
