I honestly don’t know. Is it "Choke-a-bo" "Choc-A-bow" "Choc-O-Bow" "Chuc-A-Bow"
Post me your thoughts, and thank-you in advance!

Choc-O-Bow, you can hear some people saying that way in FF X and FFX-2, so it’s probably the right pronounce

Are you from America or anywhere where you would get the NTSC version? Because i’m sure it is Choke A Bo in the PAL version.

It’s pronounced as ‘choc-o-bow’ in the animes FF Unlimited and FF The Legend of the Crystals, which is how I’ve always pronounced it too, so I guess that is the correct pronunciation. But only Hironobu Sakaguchi knows for sure…

Well, I’m used to to the FFX and FFX-2 pronunciation now. I used to pronounce in my head chuh-co-bow before I played those. I think I’ve heard somebody say "chock-a-bow" before — ugh.

What does "Chocobo" Mean? ~in terms of translations if any?
Probably nothing, after all, Squaresoft / Square-Enix invented chocobos.

Choc as in chocolate-a-boh
I don’t think Chocobo means anything, it’s just an imaginative name as most other names in the FF universe.

FF Compendium ( http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/nmisc.shtml ) offers this interesting little tidbit of a possible origin of the name ‘chocobo’, as well as also perhaps also helping to explain how it’s ultimately meant to be pronounced:

Chocobos might have gotten their name from a chocolate candy which sold in Japan a few years back (and is still popular). It was called "Chocoballs" and had a picture of a bird on the front. But unfortunately the bird looks nothing like the familiar yellow chocobo that we all know and love… ^_^

Hence the chocobo eating chocolate in-joke in the 1st episode of FF Unlimited… 😉

EDIT:

And while where’s on the subject of name origins, here is also an interesting theory from FF Compendium as to the name origin of the other FF mascot – the moogle:

Moogles are called "Moguri" (or "Mogli") in Japanese, and that comes from a combination of the Japanese words "mogura" (mole) and "koumori" (bat). And doesn’t Mog look like a mole with little bat wings? 🙂

Interesting…

When you people say "choke a bow", do you mean the "bow" part to sound like "bow" as in "bow and arrow" or as in "take a bow"? Btw, I know, because a strange force always tells me, that it is "choke a bo". Don’t ask why.

Agent0042
10-25-2005, 02:39 AM
Yeah, you got it. We mean as in "bow and arrow." I can’t imagine it the other way.

Can’t fink of it as "Choke a [take a] bow". Sounds like a song by James Brown.

Yea, Enkidoh has a nice resource. I meant I said Choc – o – bo until I played FFX, FFX-2, and watched Final Fantasy Unlimited. But now I know the right pronounciation after 6 years . . . -_-

Wattson
10-28-2005, 03:42 PM
It’s pronounced exactly like it’s spelt, cho-co-bo. Or, as it’s more "directly" changed from Japanese, chyo-ko-bo. Chyo as in, uh, well, that should be fairly intuitive. Ko as in Ko-rea. Bo as in Bow kind of works, but it doesn’t have that slight up sound of "w" in it.

chyoh-koh-boh would work too (it’s the same thing basically)

I always pronounce it as "chock-a-bow" ever since I first saw the name.
Cutey chocky.

"Choc-a-bo/Choc-o-bo"

It just seems more fluent, than any other way I’ve seen to pronounce it.
