I prefer the pre-rendered backgrounds that were in FF7,8 and 9 and i find the 3d backgrounds in FF10 terrible. And i even think the pre-rendered backgrounds felt more atmospheric compared to the dull lifeless 3d enviorments of FF10. And obove all else, FF9 backgrounds realy shine.

But what do you prefer??

Pre-rendered will always look better than what is being rendered on the spot. However, there are huge limitations to Pre-rendered, which most of us should already know. I’m a fan of stuff being rendered real time. Trying to mix both rendered models with a perfectly made pre-rendered background isn’t really catching me.

Although i gotta say, the 3d backgrounds in FF12 have Pre-rendered quality off them. I have high hopes for FF12, gameplay and visuals.

This is a very good question. I would go with pre-rendered, FFIX’s backgrounds were complete pieces of art and I wish FFX has been pre-rendered.

Exactly, the art in FFIX was superb to say the least.

totally true about the achievable atmosphere with pre rendered but for mmorpg’s(Like FFXI for example) it wouldnt work any other way

Pre-rendered backgrounds all the way and it’s a known fact that Pre-rendered looks better than real time 3-D simply because when something is Pre-Rendered it’s already loaded into the game and never changes while 3-D environments have to render as you enter any area of the game causing it to look not quite as good.

But backgrounds rendered in real time will always have greater consistency. A pre-rendered background has almost zero flexibility. The most you’re likely to see happening in such a background is a few lights flashing or extremely simple movements. A 3D background can be lively and animated.

Very true. Although i gotta say, they didn`t deliver much in FFX, although i have high hoes for FFXII, the bakgrounds looks pretty good.

Real time has greater flexibility, sure, but I don’t that’s at all important in an RPG. =/ In fact, whether or not it is pre-rendered doesn’t matter much, a suitable ambience can be created either way.

And as long game graphics improve, the 3d environment will become even better… =) we can see it from PS3 or XBOX 360
