Was there anyone who thought the battle and levelling up system in Final Fantasy 2 (of FFOrigins) was actually good?

The idea was that if you go into a hard dungeon, you get hurt a lot, so after the battle your HP raises. However, your max HP raises not actually any restored, so if you run out of recovery items, like you often do, having 20/8363 HP is not really that useful.

Plus it was stupidly easy to train, fight like 1 Goblin and keep attacking your self until you almost die and your HP goes up instantly every battle.

Any ideas?

I liked it, but it needs a few tweaks before it is perfect, i.e. Example you gave.

Not me, I didn’t like it, as a matter of fact, I didn’t complete FF II because of that, well and I didn’t like the graphics lol, but it was a pain

Sure sounds weird…

I ended up dying against boss after boss because I rushed it lol. I MIGHT try it, but I’d have to be in a damn great mood….

Having been a gamer since the days of the Atari 2600 and yet never having played the Final Fantasy series I figured it was time I rectified that. Thanks the the PS2’s backwards compatability, and the recent (ish) re-releases on PSOne format I am now in a position to play the series from the begining, in order, without any preconceptions about what a FF game should be.

I am actually currently playing FF2 at the minute and while its true that the system is flawed in many respects, the fact the HP and MP gains are "dead points" is not one of them in my opinion.

Admitedly at this stage I only have FF1 to compare too, but in that you go into Dungeon X, take on a tough beastie and get a horde of experience that will hopefully levels you up. This in turn netted you a HP bonus, but that HP was "dead points". If you had 200/400 HP before you level up, and gain 20 HP in your level up you would have 200/420 HP. So the FF2 system follows through on this idea – its just the method by which you obtain the HP is a bit different.

Maybe in later FF games they made HP gains "Live points " but being that I have another….6! games to play through before I get to the PS2 FF’s (X, X-2 and Kingdom Hearts) I wont know if thats the case of some time 🙂

Heh looks like im the new "thread killer" on the forums. My own question got no replies and my old habit of ending all discussion the second I post in a thread seems to have followed me here also.

DOH 🙂

It might have something to do with the fact that this is an old thread that no one cared about in the first place, so don’t flatter yourself.

Also, use the edit button instead of double posting.

so don’t flatter yourself.

Hmm I dont think I was flattered – just trying to get a feel for the place and making a right pigs ear of it…

I did try to delete the accidental duplicate post once I’d realised my mistake, but it said I didnt have permission. Sorry about that eh.

The level up system is actually pretty fun, if you don’t cheapasss your HP up by "attacking yourself". Not to say I think it’s perfect, by any means.

lol, I may be a cheapass, but in the debut of the game, I hit myself for about two hours. My HP are so high that the rest of the game is nothing.

Exactly. The rest of the games nothing, so whats the point of playing? I, after reading this thread, went back to the game and started a new file. I have not attacked myself once, and easily reached the recapture of Fynn and won with nobody over 1000 hp. You don’t even NEED to attack yourself, at ANY point in the game.

i really enjoy this FFs lvling system and i wish it would be reinstated in another game. complete customization is awesome. you basically get to make up your own classes of characters, which IMO rocks. im having alot of fun simply lvling my characters.

this game was pretty easy cause you can get as strong as you want where ever you are. i had a ton of life and MP and it costed my a lot of money just to sleep. it’s so hard to get money in the beginning of the game. how i got rich was i killed the mage monsters and got spell books or scroll and sold them. like the Haste Scroll was like 5000gp each. The Castle of Pandemonium was the hardest place ever for me… there were these monsters called Death Knights and boy they lost me like 1600 each hit and got that much life back. It depends on how much life you have. i had like 5000hp.
