Whenever Ive played through, ive always kept GF’s to specific characters rather than opting to shift them about all over the show. It had a couple of advantages; i.e summon compatibility reached 1000 so it took all off two seconds to summon, and it made it easier to navigate the junction system.
Also i thought it fleshed out the characters a bit more.. that way, each character is even more unique maybe? Was i the only one anal enough to do this, or is it pretty much standard practice? Sorry dont really get to talk to many like-minded souls up here in the north..
If so, who had what? I have;
Squall: Shiva, Bahumut
Quistis: Quetzlcoatyl (Spelt poorly i know!), Leviathan
Zell: Ifrit, Doomtrain
Selphie: Siren, Alexander
Irvine: Carbuncle, Eden
Rinoa: Diablos, Tonberry King
Seifer didnt get anyone, and i used Pandemona for Edea, not that i bothered much. I did feel a little bad for not using the Brothers though..
So what did you do when you fought ultimecia? If only three characters had any GF, then if one died and got removed before you could revive them then youd be fucked..
Anyways should probably stop posting (apology 2), and give everyone a chance to respond!
The problem with this, which I didn’t know at the time, was the stat-junctions were distributed unfairly. One character just so happened to had the 3 GFs with Str-J, etc. So whenever I replay the game, I try and give the GFs even based on their stat junctions. It pays off in the end, espeicially the Mag-J which helps Drawing. Aargh, I had all my Mag-Js on Squall the first time through, and whenever I Drew stuff, Squall would always get 9, while the other 2 always got like 2-4. Those Drawing sessions were so long!!!

when you fight ultimecia and a character is removed, another character will replace the removed character. so by letting those unprepared characters be removed, you’ll finally get the three characters with all the GF-s and stuff. the point is just keeping the junctioned characters alive and it makes the final fight really easy:)
secondary: rinoa, quistis, zell
if i need my secondary party to have gfs, i’d have them switch junctions with the main party, who have all the gfs. if a character needs a specific ability, i’d switch that single gf.
but…here’s how it is now (or rather, was, because i beat this game).
squall: shiva, ifrit, carbuncle, bahamut, eden
selphie: siren, brothers, pandemona, cerberus
irvine: quezacotl, diablos, doomtrain, tonberry king
rinoa: leviathan
quistis: ….none.
zell: alexander, jumbo cactuar
…you can see i don’t like my secondary party. it’s a bitch to train them all.
I remember creating huge lists of the GF’s different abilities so that I could try to come up with a combination that worked well for al three of my characters.
Squall : Leviathan, Odin
Zell: Ifrit, Quezacotl
Rinoa: Shiva
Selphie: Shiva
Irvine: Doomtrain
Quistis: Quezacotl, Shiva or Doomtrain
I haven’t played for a while so I don’t really remember the other GF’s i had. I think i had Jumbo Cactuar and a few more, but i forget.
