But I think, this just shows you there are more than just one of these clones. And they are just everywhere. You see them at the temple of the ancients, then in Nibelheim. Where else?
The one in the pipe is just another guy, shinra made experiments with… And this guy had a tattoo with the number 2.
But there’s nothing you can do for him. He’ll be gone later on (after the Jenova reunion, maybe he went there to, you never know). I think, he is just there for information. No sidequest or anything. 😉

Yes. There is a reason and a rumor. The number 2 is like Red’s number 13. He is a failed Sephiroth clone just like numbers 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,and 12. Cloud was also an experiment, but wasn’t given a number. Red was just a failed experiment specimen, so don’t think of him as a clone now. Oh yeah, the rumor. If Aerith tends to the man, go back to the pipe in disc 2 or three and he shoud say that he misses the girl and knows a way to bring her back. There is a slight chance that this is related to the revival process.
