And it was much better than FFX’s which is like Tidus you attack first, then Wakka, then Rikku, then Tidus, then Rikku, then Wakka, then Rikku, then Rikku again, then the monster…
You can have multiple people attacking at the same time and they don’t have a set position on the field. They move around a lot.
Because it’s not turn based, battles can be harder. I don’t think Nemesis or Penance would be as easy with this battle system.
FFX-2 is very fluid. The commands flow one after the other and it’s good to be able to queue up attacks and perform combos. I like seeing the damage I am doing piling up.
My only gripe is that you can’t buy new weapons and/or armour for your characters. The strength is reliant on your level and how much time you’ve spent on that dress-sphere. Also, I thought it would’ve been neat if your levelling up in a certain dress-sphere affected your permanent stats (so as Paine spent longer as a warrior for me, she should have a higher base HP, Strength, Defence, et all.)
Nevertheless, I had fun. 🙂
If you’re not experienced with FF stuff in general, you might have some problems- you don’t have a lot of time to figure things out. I’d suggest turning down the speed of the battle system till you get used to things, if that’s the case.
Also, if real time stuff is too fast for you, you probably won’t have any fun with it- it’s just going to be too hard.
FFX-2’s battle system really takes alot of getting used to, especially in the beginning. act slow, and you’ll suffer alot of damage… and also, your eyes are virtually almost plastered on the bottom-left corner of your screen, so pity pity, you might miss out on some good battle action sequences. but no doubt it’s more intense…
however i preferred FFX’s battle system, as that one required MUCH more strategy, espcially for boss fights. you can’t just hastily make moves… and you need to plan carefully your next move in accordance to when your enemy moves. (Remember Evrae on the airship? that was ingenius!) and the wrong move could easily lead to death.
that’s something that i thought FFX-2’s battle system lacked… no doubt it was more realistic and quicker, but it just kinda took the intense concentration needed for FFX away. well, at least it IS some form of CTB/ATB. anyone who’s played FF:CC will know how the producers decided to jettison turn-based combat completely… that one got rather boring after some time.

It makes battles a lot harder since you don’t really know when the enemy is going to attack and while thats happening, you have to choose your own actions.
If the game had the same battle system as FFX, it would’ve been FAR too easy.
In FFX you could easily manipulate the turns and since you knew the order of turns, you could plan accordingly. You could plan exact strategies which made it easier. Imagine fighting Nemesis or Penance using FFX-2’s battle system.
