Aerith was the name she was given in the first English demo, and it kinda stuck. it’s supposed to be closer to the japanese name, too, but I have no idea how accurate that is.

Actually…

Aeris is the official English name for FFVII, while her Japanese counterpart is named Aerith. That’s why in Kingdom Hearts, she is called the latter. They were just trying to return her to her basic roots.
