Getting yourself noticed

Hi, I’m new to the forums and was just wondering: Have any of you sent your written works to publishers? And if so, have any of you had any success? I’m finding it incredibly difficult to break through the wall and get my work noticed. I have only sent away two of my manuscripts tho, so maybe I’m being too hasty.

I’ve sent off my manuscript to three separate publishers in the last year, plus several a couple of years back. So far, no success.

It is very difficult to get your writing published, but every author has had this problem. It takes most authors thirty, forty rejections before they even break through.

If you’re in the UK, I recommend the Writer’s Handbook for a list of publishers, and for tips on how to go about publishing your works. And most importantly, keep on writing, keep on improving, and keep on trying. You never know when the break will eventually come.

My stuff got published after the first time I tried…maybe I was just REALLY REALLY lucky…wierd…

I do have the Writers hanbook, which is like my bible. I also have a lot of "how to write …" books, but after studying them I’ve found that writing cannot be taught. You’ve either got it or you haven’t. I know I have a talent for writing, so I’ll never give up.

Also, to Tigra, can I ask what you got published? Was it an article in a magazine or a novel? Who did you send it to?

Some people get lucky. First thing I ever sent to a contest got published, but that was Poetry.com. All they are is a markeitng scheme, essentially. I found out about them a while back, and I cut all ties with them. All they want is your money, they couldn’t care less about the quality of your poems.

I think ive been with one of those before, it was a poetry compitition at school, about 6 schools in all were entered. I got my poem in and so did everyone else that entered. 60% of the poems were pretty lame, but the company probably made loads by all the people who brought the book.

I was in one of those books too.

It’s a pretty good idea, on their part, really.

And at the time ( I was 12) I was just excited to be published.
