Today at my college I got to try out Adobe Streamline 4.0 and found out from a site that it converts sketches into awesome vector lineart. And after I tried it out, believe me, it does it very, very, very well. I was shocked as to how smooth and crisp the lines were – it was amazing. Of course you do need to prepare your sketch before you use Streamline (like using levels to increase the constrast and the eraser tool to take care of other imperfections). But with Streamline you’ll never have to do tedious "vector inking" ever again – if you can get ii of course.

I’ve noticed that Streamline hasn’t been upgraded for at least 3 years, making it relatively cheap compared to photoshop and illustrator. I’ve seen it selling on ebay for under a 100 bucks and the max amount of bids being around 10. Its obviously not useful for anyone other then artists who do a lot of sketching, but man, imagine having all your sketches as instant vector artwork. That feasibly means you could do all the coloring in illustrator or at least the base colors. I didn’t experiment enough to see how I could convert all that into layers for photoshop, but I’m sure it can be done.

Anyway, here’s some eyepopping examples as to what this program did to one of my sketches (which I think I’ll color now ^^; ).

Here’s two pixel or "raster" versions of a sketch that most people would use when coloring their artwork. As you can see, its already cleaned up and ready to go.

Raster Sketch 1 ()

Raster Sketch 2 ()

Now here’s the converted vector results shown in Illustrator 10 (I don’t have it on my PC, sorry ^^; ). As you can see its almost flawless, looks great up close and looks good far away. You can also see with just clicking on a swatch color you can color Millia’s hair – WITH JUST A CLICK!

Vector Sketch 2 (http://www.ffshrine.net/ender/milliavectorsketch2.gif)

Vector Sketch 3 (http://www.ffshrine.net/ender/milliavectorsketch3.gif)

And finally, here’s a comparison between a close-up of the raster version and the vector version.

Pretty damn cool eh? If I can figure out how to get base colors turned into seperate layers in photoshop then I think you could cut your work time in half. I’m going to get it for sure, whether it it be legally or illegally. ^^

I find the best tools for inking are brushes. . . and ink.
