Back in the days of my youth… When I was 18 and in my first year of University, I managed to go the first three, four months without my Playstation down there with me. Yes, this does sound surprising, doesn’t it? However, around about January / February of 2001, Final Fantasy IX was released in the UK.

My first reaction was one of a dropped jaw, namely "THERE IS A FINAL FANTASY IX!? DAMN!!!" I hit the ground running as I pondered how to play this awesome game.

I used to go home each weekend to work at the local supermarket to make some cash. That weekend, I carried my washing home as usual and then packed my Playstation in with the washing for the return journey back to Portsmouth, along with the collection of games I had.

Lugging that thing around normally was heavy work, but lugging it round whilst being careful of the contents on a Connex South Central train and then on Portsmouth buses… Well, quite.

I got the PSX back to my room, and set it up, and then begun to panic as I realised that the cable that connected the PSX to the TV had suffered damage on transit. The colour of the picture was completely messed up and the sound was not present.

Enter Pete.

Pete was my next door neighbour in halls, and he was studying Computer Engineering as I was. We looked at the problem for all of five seconds before Pete told me to get my soldering iron so he could "fix" the problem.

I was a little apprehensive at this moment.

"What if the fire alarm goes off?" I asked him.
"It won’t go off for solder," Pete replied.
"How do you know for certain?" I asked him.
"People smoke in their rooms and it doesn’t go off then," Pete replied.
"But what if…" I begun to add to the conversation.
"Oh for fuck’s sake Adam, do you want this fixed or not?" Pete asked.

That more or less silenced my argument.

We did resort to using an empty pot noodle and sellotape to try and cover the fire alarm. Pete cut the cable off (eep) and then got the soldering iron working on it (eep!) After ten minutes of frantic work, and several tests that showed no result, Pete finally finished with a satisfied nod and the PSX worked well.

I think I still owe him the pint for that.

I bought Final Fantasy IX later on that week and much fun was had playing it. That’s probably the greatest extent I’ve ever gone to in order to play a game.

Has anyone got any tales about how they came to play a certain Final Fantasy, or a length they have gone to in order to get one of the games?

Hehe. Great story!

Portsmouth buses… i know what you mean. Not the best place to be carrying even a small bag usually.

I don’t think I’d ever go to that extent to play a game, even if it was a new final fantasy. The most extreme thing i’ve done is to buy a PS2 just so I could play FFX… but then it does play DVD’s and other games and all that so it wasn’t wasted…

No, I haven’t gone to any extent as you have, Bahamut Zero. Which was a very enjoyable story.
