He hasn’t closed his eyes today
Though the moon rose high!
And Autumn leaves the scarlet leaves
Under the starlit sky

My eyes draw on the winter snow
With tears and fears and pain
A picture of a man with opended eyes
That will not close again

The eyes that lived on a hope
His eyes, died in vain
Those eyes were killed by a sparkling hope
Under the winter rain

But hope is gone
Death has had his turn
And hope and death are one
For us who never learn
