I took the freedom to edit the name of this thread because I considered it to be a spoiler and I am sure a lot of people hate being spoilered. (Or spoiled? Grr grammar.)

Anyway, answering your question, General Leo had to die for obvious story telling reasons: The main villain finishes off another strong character to demonstrate his power.
And in the end four powered-up heroes will always win over a boss enemy, no matter how strong they are.
