Osamu Tetzuka’s Metropolis

Has anyone else seen this? It’s stunning.

I just got back from the opening night at the local ‘arthouse’ cinema (it was actually decent…free sushi and sake…yeah!), and I was blown away.

Although it doesn’t have the action and violence of a lot of other anime, being based off a Manga that the creator of Astro Boy wrote, it has a thick storyline that keeps it flowing; and it was directed by the director of Akira, so you can’t go wrong.

It’s based loosely on a 1926 silent film of the same name, but the retro-future vision of it is both beautiful and terrifying – it shows both the beauty of innocence, and the corruption of humans. Basically, it’s about a giant human city, where robots are used basically as slaves. However, there are all sorts of factions, anti-robots, pro-robots, and everyone has an agenda…caught in the middle is a young Japanese boy, Kenichi, and Tima, a mysterious girl…

I really advise you track this one down and see it…it’s excellent.

Great explanation Ex, I feel the same way. I’ll be buying the DVD soon.

Although, many folks here wouldn’t like it.. If you read the Ghost in the Shell thread much will be explained. The only thing appealing to 85% of anime fans today is "KAMEHAMEHA!" and a big huge wave of energy blasting everything to bits. That’s how I feel. But I’ll still endorse Metropolis 🙂

I dont call those people anime fans. I call them DBZ fans. or Toonami fans.

And yes. As you can see by my sig, im a big Osamu-fan and Metropolis is no exception. It’s simply awesome. I’m working at Fry’s Electronics now (super-huge computer/electronics/audio/video/dvd/music/software store. bigger than Best Buy or what have you. mainly in CA and TX). I dont even work in the DVD section but I was hangin out there yesterday and convinced this one chick to buy Metropolis (Fry’s also has the biggest anime DVD section of any retail chain I’ve seen. Moreso than Sam Goody or Suncoast). So yeah, that was cool 🙂
