In japan, after the original FF, there were 2 more FFs released. Then out came the one with Cecil, dubbed FF2 here, when in fact it was actually FF4 overall. Then came FF5, which wasn’t officially released here until it showed up in the anthology for the PSX. FF6 was the next, which was named FF3 here. Then Square decided to sync the releases and named FF7 by its rightful number.

Got it?

It was actually Nintendo who was responsible for the number change, not Square. FFIV and VI ended up being the second and third FF games released in the US, so it made sense in the ‘Big N’s eyes to name them accordingly.

And it goes without saying, that if Square had managed to work around the limitations of the cartridge format and released FFVII on the N64 (as was originally planned), then FFVII would have most likely been called "Final Fantasy IV’ also. Or even, (groan) -‘Final Fantasy 64’!

Hence for all the FF games from VII and up released on the PSX and PS2 carry their proper names, as Nintendo no longer published Square’s games.

Today’s Classic FF Quote:

"Oh, I just LOVE these exams!" Seifer, attempting (and failing) the SeeD Practical Test for the umpteenth time, FFVIII.
