Unique Materia

Master Magic

Master Magic gives a character access to all magic spells by simply equipping one materia, without any status effects. To obtain Master Magic materia, master all 21 individual magic materia and then visit Bugenhagen's observatory. If you found the Huge Magic Materia, choose to get close to it and it will ask you if you wish to perform a Materia Blend. Choose yes and you will receive one Master Magic materia. You will lose all 21 of the individual mastered materia, but since a new materia is born when one is mastered, you can master them all again if you wish to get another Master Magic materia. Alternatively, speak to the traveler in the house at Kalm after receiving the Earth Harp for defeating Emerald Weapon and he will give you a set of all three Master materia.

Master Command

Master Magic gives a character access to all of the basic commands by simply equipping one materia, without any status effects. It will not give you Enemy Skills or W-Abilities, but is still quite useful. To obtain Master Command, master the command materia Steal, Morph, Deathblow, Throw, Manipulate, Mime and Sense. If you found the Huge Command Materia, choose to get close to it and it will ask you if you wish to perform a Materia Blend. Choose yes and you will receive one Master Command materia. You will lose all 7 of the individual mastered materia, but since a new materia is born when one is mastered, you can master them all again if you wish to get another Master Command materia. Alternatively, speak to the traveler in the house at Kalm after receiving the Earth Harp for defeating Emerald Weapon and he will give you a set of all three Master materia.

Master Summon

Master Summon gives a character access to all summon monsters by simply equipping one materia, without any status effects. With this materia equipped, a character can use any summon without any limits. (Barring theoretical MP limits) To obtain Master Summon, master all 16 individual summon materia and then visit Bugenhagen's observatory. If you found the Huge Summon Materia, choose to get close to it and it will ask you if you wish to perform a Materia Blend. Choose yes and you will receive one Master Summon materia. You will lose all 16 of the individual mastered materia, but since a new materia is born when one is mastered, you can master them all again if you wish to get another Master Summon materia. Alternatively, speak to the traveler in the house at Kalm after receiving the Earth Harp for defeating Emerald Weapon and he will give you a set of all three Master materia.

Huge Magic Materia

On the second disc, the characters learn that Shinra is in the process of gathering Huge Materia, a materia said to be 330 times more powerful than normal materia, with the intention of sending it up in a rocket and ramming it into Meteor. There are a total of four and this one can be obtained by successfully completing the train mission in North Corel. If you obtain it, you can choose to view it anytime by visiting the second-level of Bugenhagen's observatory after he makes this option available for you. Examine it and choose to get closer and it will emit a quiet glow. If you have found and mastered all of the Magic materia available in the game, then you can choose to blend them to form a single Master Magic materia. See the section on Master Magic materia above for more details. If you do not obtain the Huge Magic Materia, then the only way to get a Master Magic materia is to defeat Emerald Weapon and then present the Earth Harp to the traveler in the house at Kalm.

Huge Summon Materia

On the second disc, the characters learn that Shinra is in the process of gathering Huge Materia, a materia said to be 330 times more powerful than normal materia, with the intention of sending it up in a rocket and ramming it into Meteor. There are a total of four and this one can be obtained by successfully completing the submarine mission at the Underwater Reactor in Junon. Once back at the surface, use the submarine you obtained. Choose to go underwater and follow a south and slightly west path along the edge of the continent to reach a dead-end containing the sunken Red Leader sub. Note that if you have already visited Bugenhagen's observatory and placed the rest of the Huge Materia on the upper floor, you can just return again and it will appear there. If you obtain it, you can choose to view it anytime by visiting the second-level of Bugenhagen's observatory after he makes this option available for you. Examine it and choose to get closer and it will emit a gentle glow. If you have found and mastered all of the Summon materia available in the game, then you can choose to blend them to form a single Master Summon materia. See the section on Master Summon materia above for more details. If you do not obtain the Huge Summon Materia, then the only way to get a Master Summon materia is to defeat Emerald Weapon and then present the Earth Harp to the traveler in the house at Kalm.

Huge Command Materia

On the second disc, the characters learn that Shinra is in the process of gathering Huge Materia, a materia said to be 330 times more powerful than normal materia, with the intention of sending it up in a rocket and ramming it into Meteor. There are a total of four and this one can be obtained by successfully completing the mini-game in Fort Condor, either by repelling the enemy invasion or defeating Commander Grand Horn. If you obtain it, you can choose to view it anytime by visiting the second-level of Bugenhagen's observatory after he makes this option available for you. Examine it and choose to get closer and it will emit a fiery glow. If you have found and mastered all of the Command materia available in the game, then you can choose to blend them to form a single Master Command materia. See the section on Master Command materia above for more details. If you do not obtain the Huge Command Materia, then the only way to get a Master Command materia is to defeat Emerald Weapon and then present the Earth Harp to the traveler in the house at Kalm.

Huge Support Materia

On the second disc, the characters learn that Shinra is in the process of gathering Huge Materia, a materia said to be 300 times more powerful than normal materia. There are a total of four and this one can be obtained by entering the code correctly while up the Shinra rocket. (The code is Circle, Square, X, X or OK, Switch, Cancel, Cancel.) Very important note: in order to obtain this materia from the Shinra rocket, you must have obtained all three of the other Huge Materia from the various locations as well. If you have not, then the Huge Materia you obtain in the rocket will instead be one of three that you missed. I'm not sure exactly how the selection process on this works, however, if you were to say, obtain both the Huge Magic and Command materias, then you would obtain the Huge Summon materia from the rocket. If you obtain the Huge Support Materia, you can choose to view it anytime by visiting the second-level of Bugenhagen's observatory after he makes this option available for you. Examine it and choose to get closer to it and it will emit a cold glow. If you have the materia Bahamut and Neo Bahamut in your inventory, they will blend to form the materia Bahamut ZERO, but you will also keep both of them. This is regardless of how much AP you currently have on either Bahamut or Neo Bahamut. Note that you may only do this once. If for some reason, you later choose to dispose of the Bahamut ZERO, the game will not allow you to blend Bahamut and Neo Bahamut again. If you do not obtain the Huge Support Materia, then you have lost your only opportunity to obtain Bahamut ZERO materia as well as unlimited Master Summon materia. However, you can still obtain the Bahamut ZERO spell if you defeat Emerald Weapon and then present the Earth Harp to the traveler in the house at Kalm. You will receive a Master Summon materia, which will allow you to summon Bahamut ZERO, as well as every other summon.

Black Materia - Meteor

Black Materia is the materia Sephiroth seeks and eventually obtains in order to call the most destructive magic spell, Meteor, a spell capable of causing destruction to an entire planet. Players first learn of Black Materia when it's revealed that a hooded man is searching for Black Materia and that it might be Sephiroth. Then, in the Temple of the Ancients, Cloud and the group comes across a strange mural depicting Meteor, the deadly spell called upon by the Black Materia. They find the Black Materia nearby in the Temple of the Ancients and learn that in order for it to be removed, one must solve a series of riddles, but the one who solves those riddles will be destroyed in the process, along with the Temple of the Ancients itself. Cait Sith sacrifices his first toy form in order to solve the puzzle, but Cloud is manipulated by Sephiroth to hand the Black Materia over to him. The party eventually chases Sephiroth and, after defeating one of the forms of Jenova, reobtains the Black Materia as a Key Item. Cloud gives the Black Materia to one of the group to look after, but Sephiroth once again tricks the group and manipulates them to the Black Materia back in Cloud's hands. Cloud hands the Black Materia over to Sephiroth and Sephiroth uses it summon Meteor. Now, the future of the planet may rest on only one hope, the White Materia, Holy.

Historic FF Note (Possible Small Spoilers)- In other Final Fantasy games, Meteor is a powerful spell, but isn't capable of destroying an entire planet. In Final Fantasy IV, Tellah seeks the power of Meteor in order to destroy the games' villain, but uses it before he is really ready, MP and Magic wise and ends up destroying himself. In many other FF games, Meteor is simply another spell, such as Final Fantasy VIII, where it can be cast by both characters and enemies and works similarly to Final Fantasy VII's Comet2 spell.

White Materia - Holy

When Cloud first meets Aeris in Final Fantasy VII, he asks if she has any materia. She says that she does and that her materia is special - it isn't good for anything. Cloud tells her that she simply doesn't know how to use it and Aeris says that it was her Mother's materia and that having it makes her comfortable. In truth, this materia, the White Materia is Holy. This spell possibly has the power to save the entire planet, but there's no telling what effect it may have - it could end up wiping out all humans. Aeris heads to the Ancient City, where she prays for Holy, but she is killed by Sephiroth and the White Materia falls into the water. Later, Bugenhagen, an ancient man knowledgeable in the study of planet life, reveals to the group something very important: the White Materia had begun to glow a pale green. This means that Aeris's prayer had begun to reach the planet, but something is holding it back: Sephiroth.

Historic FF Note: Like Meteor, Holy is a spell in many other FF games. It generally hits a single target and can be affective against the undead, but is a good spell to use against a number of enemies. One notable example is Final Fantasy IX, in which the character Eiko is the only character who can cast Holy and can even cast it two times in a row using her Trance ability. She also has a summon Madeen which causes Holy damage.
