Okay everyone, all the links are up.
By the way, if you played Oblivion, here's some interesting info about Skyrim that might be a bit of a spoiler for some.
Sheogorath is back and still just as crazy in this game, I can confirm that by listening to the game's voice files. There's also a guard saying "Stop right there!" but it seems they ditched the "criminal scum" line from Oblivion. :(

Not too surprising, considering he's one of the big recurring characters. (He also appeared in the final dungeon of Daggerfall.)

Thanks for all your efforts. I appreciate the time required to upload so much music in lossless. I must say, however, that this was not very enjoyable for me to listen to. It all sounds like it was recorded in a vacuum or something - completely unnatural. Even the choral work in things like the main theme sound terrible. Then you have all the dungeon/exploration music that might as well be glorified ambiance because it doesn't present much in the way of interesting melodies. I suspect I will be playing some other soundtracks in the background while playing this game.

Elder Scrolls music is typically ambient, especially the dungeon stuff, so it's probably not everyone's cup of tea. I don't know what you mean about the recording quality sounding terrible, though. Sounds absolutely great to me.

@Doublehex: I'll download your version when you release it. ;)
I would have liked to give the tracks proper names, tags and a proper order, but I'd need to play the game for that and I'll only be able to do that when it comes out on the 11th. I'll be way too busy playing the game then to redo this rip, so I'll definitely wait for your version. Looking forward to it! ^^
@spaceworlder: Did you already give the boss battle version of Nerevar Rising (mus_combat_boss_02) a listen? It's better than the main theme in my opinion. :)
@Sirusjr: I think I see what you mean by it sounding a bit unnatural. I think the right word for it is cold? That was done on purpose though - Skyrim is a cold province. And while giving it that "cold" feeling, it still manages to sound pretty warm as well. Warmth that reminds the players of home - a new home they'll spend 500 hours of their life in. So I think Jeremy Soule's score is just perfect for this. ;)

Joseph

I haven't heard the boss version yet. Just the full (title screen?) version of "Sons of Skyrim".

Doublehex

@ Bar: I think what Sirus is referring to is not the instrumentation, but rather the mastering of it. When converting the music into the audio files, I think they messed with it so that they sounded somewhat unnatural, especially to those who listen primarily to real "raw" music like Sirus and I does. Now I agree with you that it does represent the coldness and barbarity of Skyrim, but wouldn't it be better suited to have that be represented by the writing, rather than some (relatively speaking) sound engineering trick?

Not that I agree with Sirus on this. I'm listening to Boss Battle 2, and I like how the combat has links both to the dark and dirty nature of combat as well as the heroic nature of the narrative. Just trying to clarify some things.

@Doublehex: I agree that the mastering sounds a bit unnatural but for me, that only adds to the experience. It sounding unnatural also makes it sound magical, like another world (which it is), while also giving it a "cold, barbarian" feeling. It could have been represented by the writing but for me and I think many others it sounds good as it is. I don't think many people will pay attention to the mastering of the music while playing either, so that's definitely no reason to mute the music in-game and play other music over it like Sirus said. Besides, you'd completely ruin the intended atmosphere like that. ;)

I'm sorry, but I will disagree with you on that. Making the sound feel unnatural will always be worse than having the music being written as unnatural. Somebody in the BIG thread put it perfectly - fake instruments bring out fake emotions, real instruments brings out real emotions. If you distort music via sound engineering to such an extent that you recognize it as "cold" or "unfamiliar", than the emotional power of the music has been messed with!

Now, about your opinion people won't notice the mastering when playing - well, maybe not. But even so, is that an excuse for terrible mastering? There is good writing here that - although I won't say ruined - has been hampered with in a cheap attempt to simulate the grimness of the setting. The thing is, the music by itself had already established that! There are explore tracks that shows both the beauty of the world, as well as the dark reality of living in a medieval society. There was no need to hamper with it! It was good as is! Granted, not all tracks have been messed with and have a warm, emotional feel to them. But in my opinion, there have been too many tracks that did have this happen to them and that is a damn shame.

Sirusjr
11-02-2011, 03:01 PM
Bar - I respectfully disagree with your suggestion that nobody will notice while playing the game. I played most of Dragon Age 2 with the sound muted because it was obvious to me that the soundtrack was made with cheap samples and it detracted from my experience. By playing epic film scores instead of the crappy in-game music it enhanced my experience because I was given the emotional uplift from the music that I was originally expecting to get from the soundtrack but didn't.

Bar
11-02-2011, 03:25 PM
@Doublehex and Sirusjr: I guess I can't disagree with opinions. It's not really terrible mastering in my opinion. It's an artistic choice that people will definitely appreciate when they hear the music in-game - because it fits with it.
The reason why I don't really like it when people mute the music and play other music instead, is that the original, intended atmosphere is lost. I'm an indie game creator myself and I learned that delivering the correct atmosphere is one of the most important things to make a good game. And one of the best "tools" (to put it bluntly) to deliver that atmosphere is music. If someone were to play happy music over a game like Amnesia, it would ruin the experience completely. Of course, you could find orchestra music that seemingly fits the mood of Skyrim, but it will never be exactly what was intended. Plus, the music would never change when the game wants it to (combat, discovering a village, leveling up, entering a dungeon, etc). That's why even if the music is pretty bad (and it definitely isn't here - turning it off because of the mastering alone is pretty harsh in my opinion), I still never mute it.

Joseph

I don't get why people mute video game music either. Would you mute the score to a movie or a TV show? It's the same level of disrespect.

Well not exactly: It's not apparently, it's real: directsong - Your Unique Recordstore - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 4 CD Set (http://www.directsong.com/mobile/productdetails.php?productid=2240)

The first thing everyone needs to do after extracting this is to go to ./special/mus_maintheme.mp3.

Also, ./explore/mus_explore_day_04.mp3 is a Morrowind theme, only better. *Squeals like a little schoolgirl!*

The mastering of the in-game files is sort of gnarly, though. It does sound sort of mechanic. I'm planning to get the 4 disc set that's coming out the week after the game, I hope the music sounds less compressed.

This releases on 11/11/11, which means, not yet.
And nobody seems to have this yet, so...
FIRST! =D
... Yeah, I love being first. ^^

The filenames and folder structure is exactly how it is in the game files. It tells you everything you need to know but the names aren't really poetic, if you see what I mean. There are 236 tracks. The main theme is 48khz while the other tracks are either 44.1khz or 32khz. The mp3s are all 44.1khz (except the main theme which I converted in 48khz) for my own convenience. If you want full quality, go for the FLAC version.
Anyway, you probably don't enjoy reading too much information, so here! Download it!

Thanks a million for the upload. I enjoyed this score thoroughly though, like Oblivion, I probably won't get any enjoyment out of 90% of the tracks here until after I've spent a day or two with the game. This music isn't meant to be melodic, but for me personally, listening to Soule's scores after having spent a lot of time in-game gives these songs melody. They are forever engraved with the memories I had hearing these tracks while mmersed in the world of TES and so it's that what makes these songs enjoyable for me.

Just registered to say that the reason everyone with good headphones thinks it sounds horrible is not because of instrumentation or mastering, but because the bitrate really is horrible. I downloaded the original files (the xwmas) and looked at the bitrate. It's only about 63kbits/sec, absolute garbage for anyone not on poor quality equipment. (If you want to check this, note that the main theme (3m 55.64s) is only 1.9 MB.)

So for anyone taking the time to download this, don't even bother with flac. It's a huge waste of your time and bandwidth. The quality's going to be nonexistent anyway - garbage in, garbage out. Get the mp3s for now, then buy the album on CD when it comes out. The problem isn't mastering or instrumentation, so your CDs will be just fine.

I took a look at the PC version and it seems it has the exact same xWMA files. Same amount of tracks as well. That means my gamerip is still complete!

I think it's possible to do - use a BSA repacker and use exactly the same folder structure as in the original rip (I merged some really small folders for my new, upcoming one because it was quite a hassle to see all the tracks) after converting all my new flac files to xWMA and renaming them to *.xwm files. ;)

I'm currently putting my new rip in rar files, it should all be uploaded within the hour. :)

Thanks for the reupload man! I downloaded it and listened to the main theme for comparison. The quality is certainly a lot better, but it's not overwhelming by any means. My initial guess is around 128kb/s for the original track, I'll know for sure when you upload the originals.

Based on this, I wouldn't recommend downloading the flac versions. You aren't losing anything with the 256kb/s mp3s. I made a spectrum plot () of the two files if anyone is interested. The upper one is the new higher quality file, the lower the original poorer quality file. Two things to notice: the poorer quality file is low-passed around 12k (that's really, really low to those who don't know) and the higher quality file is low-passed around 15k (still fairly low, but much better). The second thing is that the XBOX/PC version is encoded incredibly poorly. See the big spikes throughout the file? Those are errors in the encoding, and you hear them as a static-y popping.

The original poorer file appears to be VBR, which would be good but at 63kb/s it really doesn't matter much. The newer file appears to be CBR (and unless Bar did a crappy job encoding the file, that's part of the original PS3 file). Based on the low-pass of 15k, I'd say my original suspicion is confirmed and the files are 128kb/s CBR.

So long story short, it's great to be able to listen to these while we wait for the CDs. But they're definitely no replacement for the full quality disks.

Hi, thank you for the massive gamerip!

I actually came here looking for the trailer versions of the main theme. But, I happened to find a few decent versions on my own. These are definitely not found on the game, and I doubt the official soundtrack will have them either (but I haven't been able to find a tracklist, so who knows). SGTBizarro (http://www.youtube.com/user/SGTBizarro#g/u) gets the credit for these.

Sons of Skyrim (http://www.mediafire.com/?eymim8a6ar3zlv7) (From the teaser trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGMOMkACtn4). This one was available from a Bethesda podcast, so it's official and clean.)

Gameplay Trailer Theme (http://www.mediafire.com/?iokimhxsobx7dx7) (From this other trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjqsYzBrP-M). This one is reconstructed from various trailers because there's no official release.)

I know the quality is not the best, it's what's available. If you think you're capable of finding or making better quality versions, please do. :)

Okay, so I decided to arrange the gamerip. I have 3 hours of it done - the final hour was mostly 12 second stingers. I tried arranging them into suites, but they were not a good cohesive listening experience at all. So I just threw them out the window, leaving us with the long explore themes and combat themes.

Now, I am debating on if I should upload this now, or wait until the 4CD soundtrack comes along and see if I can mix and match the two.

Guys, has anyone run into any problems with the .rar files? I opened mine and the last few music folders within unleashed a Trojan Horse program dubbed "SHeur3.BWBW" dropper.

What? What music folders?

I don't think so, I scanned the files myself and they're clean. Nobody else seems to have this problem so I recommend redownloading it - or better: perform a virus scan on your PC ;)

Relevant info for those who pre-ordered the 4-disc album:

- If your e-mail is a Google account, the reason you haven't received messages from Direct Song is because Gmail is "censoring" e-mail communication from directsong.com. (I think this means Gmail is flat out deleting the messages instead of marking them and moving them to the Spam folder.)

- Manufacturing of the soundtrack is being handled outside Direct Song. The album will shipped to Jeremy Soule first so he can put his John Hancock on it, then it'll be shipped to you.

- They're apparently on track to deliver their orders within the original 3-4 week estimate. Also, orders are being signed and shipped in the order they were received.

All info was gathered from the official Facebook page of the soundtrack.

As with the previous two entries in the series, the soundtrack to Skyrim is sold exclusively via Jeremy Soule's distributor DirectSong; on November 4, 2011 a physical-only release consisting of 4 audio CDs was announced, coinciding with the launch of the game. All copies preordered before December 23 will be personally autographed by Soule.[45] Following an October 17 tweet from Pete Hines, Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing at Bethesda, stating "The OST would take 4 CDs",[46] a 4-disc CD set release was spotted by Digital Song customers during an account display error.[47] "Day One" preorders from Amazon.de also include a 5-track promotional Skyrim soundtrack sampler.[48]

Is there any tool that I can convert mp3 or flac to XWM format? I want to have high quality music ingame.

Bar
12-02-2011, 03:23 PM
Yes, there is. You have to get the DirectX SDK. Then, with command line, type "cd %DXSDK_DIR%\utilities\bin\x86", then xWMAEncode inputfile.wav compressed.xwm. :)
If you're going for high quality, I'd take the flac and convert that to wav so you can use xWMAEncode on them. ;)
I doubt it will change much to the quality of the music though, as I think the xWMA format itself is the real trouble here.

Thanks for your effort with this. Considering these files originated from a highly compressed gamerip, they're pretty decent quality.

Here's the main theme "Dragonborn" In true 320kbps ripped directly from D1rectSong. Crank the volume and hear the difference :)

How did you rip it from DirectSong? You mean, from the samples?

Pretty much. Instead of uploading a limited version of the song to stream as a sample, they have the whole song available to listen as a sample. So I just swiped the file right off the site :) They didnt even bother putting up a low bit rate one or anything, full 320kbs file.

Edit: I really don't feel bad about it since I've already forked over my $30 and still waiting on the darn OST to come in the mail x)

Well, that's good to hear. I performed a scan on my computer and it might've come from elsewhere while I was browsing. It was a pain in the arse trying to get rid of it before anything was comprised.

Sorry to reopen this thread. I've just begun to play the videogame and the soudntrack is awesome. I've tried to browse the different pages of this thread but i'd like to know if the rip that you offer on first page can be consider as the final rip? Or things are going to change (quality, tracks, names...)?

I'd just like to know, anyway i have to finish the game so i have some time forward me :D

Hello firefue ! ( pulse ??)

well .. we are still missing the music of the DLCs ...

(well for dawnguard we have already a MP3 rip (= here !! Thread 119252) and I don't know if there any new music with the new DLC "Heartfire ".)

It would be magic to have the music in lossless for Dawnguard... some tracks are really very .. let say "atmospheric"

@firefue & lonelywolf:
Sorry for the really late reply. I'm planning to update my gamerip with tagging and the DLC tracks as soon as all of the DLC so far (Dawnguard, Hearthfire & the upcoming Dragonborn) releases on PS3 (which has superior quality music). :)

I did a really quick rip of the Dragonborn DLC music for Xbox 360. The quality was so low that I didn't even bother to upload a FLAC version this time, so here's a VBR MP3 version.

I'm really disappointed with this. Sure, it's very nostalgic to have Morrowind music in Skyrim, but couldn't they just have put at least a little effort into this? You could just as well go listen to the Morrowind soundtrack again. It's probably the better thing to do if you want good quality, too.

I also linked to dharmacide's topic for the Dawnguard music for now. ;)
But I will still update the original rip with the DLC tracks as soon as everything is released on PS3, as the PS3 version of Skyrim's music is in better quality. :)

Yes here is a nice example of "doing new stuff with old stuff"... I know it's a little bit frustrating.
It's a very nice expansion (at least this is a GOOD DLC ... Hearthfire was not good enough ..IMO)...

I heard that PS3 owners of Skyrim are still waiting for the Dawnguard DLC... sorry for you guys !
I hope Bethesda will fix this quickly...

Off the topic, but if anyone is not aware of this :

Since we are all Elder scroll's fans, here a nice web site : Morroblivion: The Resurrection of Morrowind | Bringing Morrowind Back to Life (http://morroblivion.com/)
Those fans are trying to play Morrowind or Oblivion with the gaming engine of Skyrim !!
It' still WIP but it's a very nice project !

And before you ask, YES you need to install inside your computer Morrowind , Oblivion and Skyrim !

thanks Bar for uploading your encode of the Dragonborn score. you'd bet me to it, as I'd just done the same the day following the release and was similarly frustrated at the quality. I'd be nice if they didn't compress the music pieces as much as is done, considering they did the same with pc.

however, while I felt a little disappointed here with tracks taken straight from Morrowind's score, I really enjoyed some of the latter tracks. now, taking into fact that there were only a couple new tracks with the previous dlc, I wasn't expecting many original tracks with Dragonborn. correct me if I'm wrong, but while I recognized the majority of the tracks from Morrowind, (it would have been nice if Jeremy had done re-workings on less of Morrowind's tracks, rather than including a load of untouched tracks from it's score, but we can't be sure of his presence or involvement with Skyrim's downloadable content), I believe that tracks from solstheim_08-11 are one's created solely for the dlc. I especially loved every second of solstheim_10.

will be looking forward to hearing what comes out from the ps3 releases of the dlc, which have been confirmed to come out at some point in time.

(also: as I mentioned earlier in this post of that I had similarly encoded the music from Dragonborn, I was wondering if I should create a thread for it. I'm only asking as it's a little frustrating, but I still appreciate your work Bar, that you don't include a tracklist/information on your rips, or that of a cover (I've created a cover for Dragonborn as well, matching that of the one in the thread I created for Dawnguard), and an organised single list of tracks. however, I realise this to be a personal preference, and therefore might not be necessary.)

At least, we can find all the information about Skyrim's music in one place... sounds practical.

Also, you're right, solstheim_08-11 are new. solstheim_10 is also my favourite of the new tracks, as it has a particularly nice (and very different from some of the other tracks) atmosphere to it :)

For those waiting for the rip: I'll probably finish it this weekend. I've named and tagged all of the 271 tracks (no duplicates this time!), but I haven't done the track order yet.
I've tried to use as much track names as possible from the OST.
I noticed the only track available on the OST and missing in the actual game is "Unbound", but luckily, the rip coming this weekend more than makes up for that with all the tracks they left out of the OST, as well as the DLC tracks taken from the PS3 version of the game.
As before, I'll release an MP3 CBR 256kbps version and a FLAC version (both named and tagged). I'll also release the original MSF files (unnamed and untagged).
So basically, don't forget to check this thread this weekend! :)

Hey Bar,

Listening to it now, did you ever happen to get the track Unbound added? Also, this rip is fantastic, by far the best around. Patch 1.9 is now in beta testing on steam and should be out at the end of the month. I have a feeling that there will be another big DLC coming soon. If so do you plan to add that later on when it releases?

Yeah, I've had the same feeling too ever since they announced the patch. There's definitely going to be more DLC, and as soon as it releases, I'll add the new music to the rip.
I haven't added Unbound yet as it isn't in the game, but if you want, I'll add it when I next update the rip (probably for the next DLC).

Thanks for the rip! I was really hoping to hear Pine Forest on the soundtrack and was disappointed to find it in the Atmospheres track with sound FX over it! Cool sound, but not when all I want to hear is the music. Too bad it's broken into so many different parts instead of a seamless track. If time permits, I may throw together a frankenstein version of Pine Forest.

To be completely honest, I was quite disappointed with the score of Skyrim. Relentless Fire is the only mildly good track in the game.
