Being a huge fan of the Spyro games and the music (particularly Stewart Copeland's work), I recently completely reripped these after finding my previous rips unsatisfactory. I think they are the most complete versions you will come across. They are encoded to MP3 using LAME on the Slow setting at -V0.

For the first three PS1 games, the music was converted from the .XA files on the game discs, and resampled from 37.1khz to 44.1khz
Enter the Dragonfly was converted from the ADPCM files on the PS2 disc
A Hero's Tail was converted from the original GameCube audio files and resampled from 32khz to 44.1khz

The files' password is at the bottom of this post.

SPYRO 2: RIPTO'S RAGE (2CDs)
MUSIC BY STEWART COPELAND

The European release encoded all the music to mono, to make way for other spoken languages. I ripped the majority of music from the NTSC disc, which was in stereo. The EU disc contained some completely different alternate mixes (for example, the Ripto boss fight has no operatic voice in the EU version, whilst the US edition does). There was also some unused music on the EU disc to include, along with two early demo versions of Skelos Badlands and Sunny Beach from another source that were not included in the game.

1. Gateway To Glimmer (3:26)
2. Summer Forest (2:36)
3. Idol Springs (3:38)
4. Hula Girl Rescue (0:21)
5. Colossus (3:43)

SPYRO: YEAR OF THE DRAGON (2CDs)
MUSIC BY STEWART COPELAND

The EU release once again had the music in mono, to make way for other spoken languages. It also dropped a number of tracks to make even more space available, and thus some tracks were used more than once in the EU version (so some fans never got to hear some of the original music in their native territories). I ripped the music from the NTSC disc, which was complete and in stereo.

1. Main Title (3:32)
2. Sunrise Spring (3:06)
3. Sunny Villa (3:25)

SPYRO: A HERO'S TAIL (2CDs)
MUSIC BY GAME AUDIO LTD.

British company Game Audio Ltd. composed the music to A Hero's Tail. Whilst making it their own, there are some lovely Copeland homages in there (the acoustic guitar in particular). The music is great, and does justice to the Spyro musical legacy; Game Audio's reinvented Spyro theme is a lovely little tune, wholly their own but very Spyro-esque.

KaFaraqGatri
11-01-2011, 06:28 PM
I could be wrong but Windows does not have any effect on ID3 tags. Its firmly a software thing.

aces4839
11-01-2011, 06:29 PM
maybe it was when i converted flac to wav then to mp3. oh well. no use complainin now.

KaFaraqGatri
11-01-2011, 06:30 PM
Actually that is the reason - WAVs only store basic ID tag info. If you converted direct to MP3 the tags would be retained. I recommend dbPowerAmp for such tasks. Its great! Or FLAC have their own frontend app, which is free.

Id have to agree. I thought nothing would beat Spyro 2 (or 1, for that matter) but the ETD score is just amazing.

Sadly, I am going to have to start the rip again. I bought the GCN release (as it has less bugs) but the audio is in mono. The PS2 version is in stereo, so I need to buy that.

Yep, exactly as they are on the original XA files on the NTSC disc. Congratulations.

All you have done via PM -- and now here -- is proclaim how your new TV makes the music sound better than these rips, and how you have had a better rip for over a year. If my work does not impress you, that's fine. No one is making you download it and no one says you have to like it. But seriously, why try and find fault in something a lot of other people are enjoying? What are you trying to prove?

I'll be uploading VBR-0 files for now. I dont wish to waste bandwidth uploading huge files that may get taken down again. Fear not, though: the XA files have a cut-off around 18khz, and are of quite a narrow stereo width, so VBR-0 encoding will give you full frequency response with -- very likely -- no noticable loss of quality.

An audiophile like me will notice. Also, could you just upload the .xa files? I would convert them into a lossless format.

AND ONE MORE THING: what do you use to rip your PS1 & PS2 games? Because I want to do that myself.

Just curious - is there any particular reason you opted for VBR instead of CBR/320kbps?

KaFaraqGatri
03-22-2012, 11:47 PM
In short, 320k wastes disk space. Depending on the complexity of the source (stereo image, frequency response), not every frame needs to be encoded with 320kbps to replicate the best sound quality.

Take Summer Forest, for example. Its ambient music, and most of the frequencies are below the 5khz range or so, with some bleed/extra sounds in the 8-12khz range. Anything above that is mostly "air" or harmonic frequencies at a very low volume. Giving 320kb to these frequencies is a waste of time - the VBR encoding on this particular file encodes nothing above 16khz because there is nothing there, instead using the bits to encode all the frequencies below that level.

However, something like Fireworks Factory has a much more complex signal. There's more instrumentation and a mix of sounds. The VBR encoding on this file encodes the signal right up to 19khz (approximately) on both channels - which is the cut off of the original source (the XA files were encoded at a sampling frequency of something odd like 38.5khz). So audibly, the encode is pretty much lossless (although there will always be those who claim to hear a difference).

You could encode all the files at 320kbps and they will sound the same as the VBR-0 encodes - but those 320kb used every second to make to the MP3 file will be encoding "useless" data in some tracks, and thus taking up extra room on your hard disk.

In short, its generally agreed that LAME VBR-0 gives the highest sound quality whilst not eating up disk space. It can encode right up to 20khz, whilst some non-LAME codecs cut off at 16khz at 320kbps CBR. So to be safe, I always use LAME and always VBR-0.

(I may well have made some mistakes but to the best of my knowledge, what I said is generally correct I think!)

Fair enough. All my music is encoded at 320kbps, I suppose because I like things coherent and consistent, and because mp3s are simple and are compatible with almost anything. Plus they look nice and tidy on the spectrogram. Disk space isn't much of an issue for me.

Are you saying these files sound exactly the same as they would have if you encoded them at 320kbps?

KaFaraqGatri
03-22-2012, 11:58 PM
VBR MP3s are just as compatible. I use them on my iPhone as I can fit more albums on than I could using 320k - since both encodes would sound the same :)

Jakz
03-23-2012, 12:03 AM
Oh, I know. All mp3s are the same in terms of compatibility, I was merely explaining why they were my format of choice. Awesome. Thanks again buddy. :)

KaFaraqGatri
03-23-2012, 12:07 AM
I used to use 320k all the time but figured I needed the extra space. I post things here in 320k generally as people seem to prefer it. But in cases like this, where the files were from a compressed source, sometimes with a narrow stereo image and varying quality, I'll use VBR. But you are most welcome :)

KaFaraqGatri, I wonder if you could help me.

I have all three games ripped to my computer and want to have a go at extracting the music myself. I have managed to extract the .STR files with MagicISO but literally nothing will read them properly. I've tried VGMToolBox, PSMPlay, PsxMC, PSound, you name it. PsxMC, PSMPlay and PSound don't seem to recognise the .STR files at all, where as VGMToolBox will scan the files but find nothing. I have followed various tutorials on how to do this but can't seem to bypass this part. What am I doing wrong here? Am I missing some sort of necessary component?

Thanks.

EDIT: Error codes:

PSMPlay - "The File Format is unsupported. (CODE = 00000000)"

PsxMC - "Plug-in which can process a file'C:\Users\-\Desktop\MUSIC1.STR' was undetectable."

PSound - "Unrecognized file format. Do you want to scan this file?" (I scan the file, it finds nothing...)

I have a question.

I know the PAL version of Spyro The Dragon contains 7 tracks that aren't present on the NTSC version, but does the NTSC version contain any tracks that aren't on the PAL version?

KaFaraqGatri
04-03-2012, 10:56 PM
As far as I remember, no. Its the other way round, the PAL one has more unused tracks, IIRC.

Jakz
04-03-2012, 11:07 PM
So there's no musical content present on the NTSC version that ISN'T on the PAL version? So the PAL version basically has it all?

I think it might just be a case of turning the SFX off and recording the music from the game using PS2-PC recording hardware then converting it to MP3, I could be wrong. If only PS2 games were as easy to rip music files from as the PS1 discs ^^;

1) Why would I convert anything to MP3? I don't hate quality.
2) And yet a french guy managed to rip the entire Ratchet and Clank series, including an unused song from 3.

Well I was on a mission finding Ryan Beveridge's contributions to the Spyro games, and I stumbled across this, the tracks can be found in the 'Spyro Rank 2' section, tracks 6, 10 & 11, don't know if you'll count these as Spyro tracks, but they were released by Stewart Copeland and certainly sound Spyro-esque!
