I wondered why my link was getting so many downloads only from Sonic Retro. Should have known. XD Thanks at least for the credit.

And technically, I ripped it the day it came out. I wasn't late. D:<

For those who are still wondering why this album is special it's because this is a 20th anniversary commemorative soundtrack that, in addition of the musics from Sonic 1 and 2 for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, contains the original sound demo tapes composed by Masato Nakamura before to be adapted on the Genesis/Megadrive chiptune.
You can clearly see the difference and really appreciate the work of Nakamura at this time.
Actually this soundtrack is only available to Japan.

From what I remember, yes. Jackson didn't like the demos because he felt limited by the Mega Drive/Genesis' hardware.

According to Brad Buxer during an interview (Michael Jackson's composer), the chiptune of the Genesis/Megadrive didn't honor the artist. Not satisfied by the result he didn't want to be credited and associated to the game but it's not really clear.

Sonic 3 credits seems to be the base for Stranger in Moscow released 2 years later.

First, thanks a million Ashram, that was really quick.
Once more we get the MJ-S&K thing, the only one who could actually say the truth about all of this has passed away, we can go on and on arguing if it was true or not, however, that's not the reason for which SEGA has not released that OST. MJ didn't copyright them, his name doesn't appear in the credits and IMO, Stranger in Moscow doesn't sound that close to the start of the Staff Roll. There's no real proof other than that interview of Brad Buxer, a lot of people consider that some sort of urban legend.
SEGA has celebrated the 20th anniversary in a lame way with their previous CD releases, they have only selected some tracks direct from the older CD's and put them on a single disc, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sonic CD OST they'll release will only have the CDDA tracks from the game, I think they don't release the S3/S&K OST simply because they're lazy. Thank goodness DCT took the decision of releasing the Sonic 1&2 OST themselves, the hell would have frozen over before SEGA would ask them.

I'm pretty sure they WILL do that. The Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack was never released. Instead, you could just put the game disk into any CD Player and listen to the songs.

The American version had some sort of soundtrack released. However it had extended versions of the songs, so it was worth buying even if you knew you could listen to the game disk in a CD Player.

Supposedly according to Jun Senoue on Twitter, he confirmed that the Sonic CD 20th Anniversary soundtrack will have a Crush 40/Cash Cash version of Sonic Boom. Hoping it's an actual studio version, and not the cleaned up live version they did at Sonic Boom, although I loathe Cash Cash with a passion.

Until Sega don't officially clarify the situation and announce a soundtrack for Sonic 3 let's go back to listen to the Nakamura's demo :)

I agree. I will always take MJ's involvement as a rumor until his hiers release the alleged demos. Sonic 3 is not the only work which is said to have MJ involved and that by his own petition, his credit for it was removed. Some say he wrote most of the music for "The Simpsons Sing the Blues". After listening to Do The Bartman, do you really think that's true?

Masa's demos are awesome, I can't understand why SEGA butchered most of the ones for Sonic 2.

butchered? I dont understand. Masa didnt just create the demos. he also created the final chip tunes.

He did write the music, but it seems to me that the sound programmers at SEGA made some "adjustments" to the music when they translated his work to the MD sound engine, I might be wrong, though. I really don't know if he didn't make those "adjustments" himself, I think most of the demo versions for Sonic 2 are much better than the final work and despite the MD sound shortcomings, their sound could have been close to that version.

*EDIT* I just compared the music from the S2 proto rom and in that version most of the music from the demo version was translated very close to the originals, most noticeable are the Boss Music and Casino Night. I wonder why they arranged the tunes, only Metropolis Zone was kind of weird and a little annoying and did need the adjustment, but the rest were fine, what could have happened from the proto to the final version?

Maybe is a little off-topic. I ripped the Sonic CD soundtrack a couple of years ago and I believe that the music was supposed to loop, the hidden PCM tracks link almost perfectly at the end of the stage tracks, maybe Sega tried to implement a system in which a PCM track would start at the moment the music ends and would play until the CD lens went back the the start of the track, of course, CD players aren't that reliable for such a thing, the synchronization efforts must have been a nightmare, check this thread (Thread 94768) if you want to listen to that rip I made. It is encoded in FLAC, I'll try to upload an MP3 version later.
