With the conclusion of one of summer 2011's more action-y series (that actually provided a sincere relationship upgrade between the male and female leads), comes its OST. Chiaki Ishikawa is yet another pop songstress attempting to make the jump to composer, and mentoring her is frequent collaborator, Masara Nishida (who arranged the music for the Element Hunters theme song she sang, among other things), best known for the Burst Angel score. It seems that Chiaki Ishikawa draws heavily from the "retro Kenji Kawai" handbook as a lot of tracks harken back to Kenji Kawai before the "Jinki: Extend" score where Kawai changed his style slightly and began using more live instruments.

There's some cliched numbers and some obvious signs of inexperience here, though Nishida's influence manages to keep this score sounding professional if a bit simple and straightforward.

I think a first score could sound a lot worse, however. Hopefully in the future, as Ishikawa finds her style, and breaks away from needing Nishida's help, we might see greater things. The track "Crisis" hints at some Yuki Kajiura influence, and there's some nice rock riffs that hint at a rough edge that most Japanese composers don't have. There's many directions she can take here and if she finds more composing work we might soon find out.

Oh yeah, and she also composed and sang the opening and ending themes. The woman has potential.

Its a solid score, some nice slower parts to it and good integration of Ishikawa's vocals but I wasn't too excited about it. The action music was not as exciting.
