Listen to it... if you appreciated Dario Marianelli's super-popular scores for period romance dramas like Pride & Prejudice and Atonement but have waited to hear him apply that tragic romanticism to the impressively massive orchestral scale of V for Vendetta and The Brothers Grimm.

Avoid it... if you simply cannot accept the application of stereotypical wailing female vocals and regional flutes in an obvious sonic battle against Latin chanting and orchestral bombast for the war between pagan knowledge and Christian fervor at the time of the Roman Empire's collapse, even if these elements are masterfully employed.

Agora (2009)
Released on October 2009

Plot Summary

Alexandria, 391 CE: Hypatia teaches astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Her student Orestes is in love with her, as is Davus, her personal slave. As the city's Christians, led by Ammonius and Cyril, gain political power, the great institutions of learning and governance may not survive. Jump ahead 20 years: Orestes, the city's prefect, has an uneasy peace with Christians, led by Cyril. The Christians enforce public morality; first they see the Jews as their obstacle, then nonbelievers. Hypatia has no interest in faith; she's concerned about the movement of celestial bodies and the brotherhood of all. What place is there for her?

Not a very complete plot summary. Having seen the film and adore it I'd say it's more like this:

Based on the surviving accounts of the final Christian overtaking of the Vesteges of the Roman world, Agora takes place in what had once been the greatest and most prolific city of knowledge and learning: Alexandria of Egypt.

Hypatia (Rachel Weiz) is a professor of mathematics and philosophy to students from around the Roman Empire who have come to learn in Alexandria. Recently made a legal religion, Christians have begun to take bold steps to assert their place in Alexandrian culture. An insult to the god Serapis (an amalgam god meant to represent all gods who ever were worshiped in either Greek, Roman, or Egyptian cultures) causes the leaders of the Serapium to take action insighting a Christian mob who are given the right to destroy the Serapium, the house of learning for Alexandria, the place of worship for all Pagans, and the final remains of the Library of Alexandria (which had been destroyed centuries earlier).

Hypatia escapes with as many books as possibly and some time later (approximately 20 years) she is still devoting her life to understanding the cosmos while the religious and political world around her are in upheaval. Those who were her students and allies become her enemies and a plot is devised to usurp rule of Alexandria and destroy Hypatia in the process.

It's one of my top movies too. I've always been fascinated with Alexander the Great not to mention the history and evolution of religion...this taking place at the fall of Alexandria due to the influence of the interactions between the religions and science is so fascinating to me! It's worth watching and the music is brilliant in it!
