Amazing! Thanks so much for this. BY FAR the base collection of "The Rock" so far...

By my estimation, we are still missing 8 cues. Some may be tracked from elsewhere in the film, but others ("This Isn't A Training Exercise") are still unreleased...

Hummel’s Demands* (Hummel addresses the room full of Military personal with his demands)
Peach Sorbet Persuasion* (Stan and Carla on the Roof - could be "Marriage" tracked...)
National Secret* (Mason is removed from his cell)
This Isn’t A Training Exercise* (Awesome montage of FBI setting up mobile command)
The Chase - Film Ending* (Overlay of Navy SEAL / Goodspeed theme at the end of the chase)
Palace of Fine Arts* (Goodspeed following Jade on his motorcycle)
Between The Rock and a Hard Place* (SEALs study the maps - most likely tracked from “Hummel’s Speech”)
The Situation* (right before "Rodent Problem" - Hummel finds a camera on a dead SEAL, Goodspeed comes clean to Mason)

If anyone has any information on these missing cues, please post or PM me immediately!

Great to know. Steven M. Stern also wrote music for the film - and I don't believe any of it is represented on this release. Hmm...

Takehiro, thanks for the info and hard work. Let's hope the unreleased cues surface some day. In the mean time, this is a terrific release!

Is this one of the scores that some people say a lot of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie's score originated from? I suspect that Gladiator is one of them, but what are the others? I'm kind of curious since this seems like it's a pretty big score for everyone, and to date, Tak's is apparently the best version.

Hybrid says Klaus Badelt wrote "underwater march" which is pretty much from The Road To El Dorado, and Jim Dooley wrote "parlay" which is from another movie of his called Embryo.

The Dimensioner

Well, I know that, because I also read his response to cheesy a couple days ago on the HZ boards. :P Besides, Hybrid says that Blake Neely wrote Parlay (he did the music for The Mentalist, didn't he?). And Dooley wrote the Tortuga theme.

And anyway I want to know how The Rock relates to Pirates.

Actually this is one score where the synthesizer lines are totally fantastic (among with Broken Arrow (Thread 88024), Crimson Tide (Thread 94871) and The Peacemaker). Take for instance the cues called 'The Morgue', or 'The Chase', or 'Hummer Gets The Rockets'. Amazingly break-neck synthesizer lines and innovative electronic sounds mixed with traditional orchestral instrumentation. This is pure ecstacy/orgasm! This is acoustic porn!!!

Yes, someone should. Save for like one version out there that has Optimus with Sam & Mikeala (and the commercial release, of course) they're all so shitty. Mark actually went on record about this in the LaLaLand release of Bad Boys complete score. He had a meeting with the producers (Bay, Bruckheimer) and decided to do the movie after understanding the musical requirements of the score (driving beats, generics).

Steve's not that bad. Yes, compared to the MV OGs, yes, he's not as great. But, I understood from some Steve Jablonsky interview that because of his work on BB2 (and from starting on Armageddon) that he became Bay's go-to guy.

I praise him for Transformers. He took what could have been your standard action score, and made it something amazing. If I remember right, there wasn't a planned release for the score. *I THINK*. Luckily for me, when it finally came to the time it was released in October of '07, I pre-ordered a copy at my FYE. Now the physical disc is sold out, and I have one. It means all the more to me. Gears of War 2 is another one. I've never played the game, but the complete score is awesome. There's one track in there called "Dom and Maria". Listen to it. It's epic.

I love his horror scores, too. Friday the 13th is my favorite. And while the films themselves may not be that great (depending on people's opinion), the scores certainly are.

I praise him for Transformers. He took what could have been your standard action score, and made it something amazing.

Seriously? It pretty much is your standard action score. Its a cookie-cutter score, a sound thats about 10 years out of date, taking pointers from other, more talented MV/RCP composers. Its good, mindless mickey-mouse music that serves the mindless movie, and its OK to listen to if the mood strikes you. But as a film score, it is far from amazing or special. You compare this to something by someone truly talented like John Barry and there's no real comparison. The Last Valley has more passion and emotion in it than Transformers.

There was always a CD release planned, Jablonsky's statement is online somewhere. I forget where though. It just came out late but people think it was because of the petition.

As for Rabin, I like a couple of his scores but have yet to hear his very recent stuff which apparently is decent. In his earlier ones, the rock element was just too much for me!

To me, it is something special. I find it surprisingly good for an action movie. Plus, you have more musical experience than I do, and we're not quite the same age lol. I think I told you once John Barry bores me. His James Bond theme is awesome but other than that, everything sounds the same. To each his own

KaFaraqGatri

But other than that, everything sounds the same. To each his own

Compare Body Heat to Dances with Wolves and then tell me if they sound the same :)

Sometimes I fancy something mindless and pedestrian, theres nothing wrong with that. But as I expand my horizons and listen to older scores or work by other composers, it makes you realize why some long-time film score fans dislike something like Transformers and how most scores these days are nothing compared to older works - even stuff from the 90s sounds better than most modern scores. But thats normal, film scores will continue to sound different as the decades go on. I guess its kind of exciting to see how the style will change. Look at 80s scores - something like Commando would never work in a modern film but its a product of its time and a guilty pleasure :P

Does anyone have the interview in connection with scoring "The Rock"?

H-GW: "I basically helped Nick Glennie Smith and Hans get through it - there was a mountain of music to be written and hardly any time (what's new), not to mention probably the most odious director alive plus the eternal task master Jerry "let's torture Harry now" Bruckheimer. The car chase was one of a few that became my responsibility. I thought Nick did a REALLY good job considering the circumstances."

Zimmer: "The main theme is mine, as are a few other bits. It's really hard to tell. I do have a huge influence in there. But I never really wanted to write any of it. It was always supposed to be Nick Glennie-Smith's score."

1 - Opening Titles - Hans Zimmer, Nick Glennie-Smith
2 - Hummel Gets The Rockets - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
3 - Baby Doll* - Harry Gregson-Williams
4 - Rock House Jail - Nick Glennie-Smith
5 - Hummel's Speech - Hans Zimmer, Nick Glennie-Smith
6 - The Quarter* - Nick Glennie-Smith
7 - The Chase - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams, Don Harper
8 - Jade - Nick Glennie-Smith
9 - Lift Off - Nick Glennie-Smith
10 - The Furnace - Welcome To The Rock - Don Harper, Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
11 - The Shower Scene* - Nick Glennie-Smith
12 - Rodent Problem* - Harry Gregson-Williams
13 - The Morgue* - Harry Gregson-Williams
14 - In The Tunnels - Harry Gregson-Williams
15 - Off The Track - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
16 - Mason's Walk - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
17 - Deadline - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
18 - First Launch - Harry Gregson-Williams
19 - Aftermath* - Nick Glennie-Smith
20 - Mutiny - Nick Glennie-Smith, Harry Gregson-Williams
21 - Lighthouse - Harry Gregson-Williams
22 - The Last Chip - Harry Gregson-Williams
23 - Green Smoke - Nick Glennie-Smith
24 - Safe* - Nick Glennie-Smith
25 - Fort Walton Kansas - Nick Glennie-Smith

NGS's original score was good, but Bay didn't like the themes. So, everything had to be reworked.
HZ wrote some of the themes (the Opening/Main Theme of course, the Hummel's Speech Theme & the Fort/Walton Kansas Theme) and arranged a few tracks with NGS (the Opening sequence, Mason's Walk...).
What was left from NGS in the end ? some of the other major themes of the film => Jade (which is a replacement theme), the 2 other themes in the OST's Rock House Jail.
But it was really a team work => HZ/NGS with HGW, Don Harper, Steven Stern, Russ Landau...
The Chase was co-written by HGW & Don Harper... Harper also did The Furnace, beginning of OST's In The Tunnels...
Russ Landau helped on the Deadline sequence (featured in OST's Mason's Walk - First Launch)...
Steven Stern did some quiet electro music not featured in the OST (the Fairmont Hotel music, some of the film's Rock House Jail sequence).
And HGW did quite a lot compared to those two... Some of the superfast electro music => the First Launch scene, the Last Chip scene (featured in Rocket Away), the Morgue scene, among some other arrangements on NGS's work...

one of zimmers best works

HaHa, it's nice to see that Hans Zimmer is getting all the kudos for this one.

H-Gregson Williams: "I basically helped Nick Glennie Smith and Hans get through it - there was a mountain of music to be written and hardly any time (what's new), not to mention probably the most odious director alive plus the eternal task master Jerry "let's torture Harry now" Bruckheimer.

NGS's original score was good, but Michael Bay didn't like the themes. So, everything had to be reworked.
Hans Zimmer wrote some of the themes (the Opening/Main Theme of course, the Hummel's Speech Theme & the Fort/Walton Kansas Theme) and arranged a few tracks with NGS (the Opening sequence, Mason's Walk...).

Thanks for the FLAC, however my RAR download(ORON) is corrupted.

It worked fine for me. Either you didn't download the complete archive, or the software you are using to open the archive isn't working on this particular file. Try re-downloading it again, and if that doesn't work try some alternative software to open it.

Hey,
I feel this is a noob question to ask, but I really dont have much experience with film music :(

Does this contain the origional soundtrack, like the one on amazon.
Also what do people mean when they say does it contain SFX and what do you mean by Recording Sessions (in the title)

Thanks you so much in advance ;)

Pidgeon
04-26-2012, 05:05 PM
1) This release surely has more/different tracks than the Amazon version (see point 3).
2) SFX = sound effects.
A sound effect is something which have been added to the movie after having recorded a music track, so a SFX for example is dialogue, explosions and so on.
3) When you want to start a studio recording of a movie soundtrack, you call the conductor and musicians and you let them play in the studio. Every time a track is played, it is recorded too. They usually play a track multiple times, so that there are different versions for each single track (those versions are called "alternate tracks"). So, if you have 7 different main tracks, you could have 1 variation for each one for a total of 14 tracks, so for example you would obtain the following list of recorded tracks:

1a - Prologue
1b - Prologue (alt.1)
2a - ...
2b - ...
3a - ...
...
7b - End credits (alt.2)

This list represents the result of recording sessions.
The CD being offered in Amazon contains the edited version of the main tracks only, so for example you would only have 7 tracks, and not the alternated ones.
In conclusion, recording sessions are the most complete things available because they consists of every bit of music recorded for the movie, but sometimes they are not edited, for example you could hear the voice of the conductor.
A track being released on a commercial CD usually is edited so that music sounds "good", but sometimes the original track of the recording session is better than the edited one, for this reason:

I hope to have solved your doubts :).

thanks in advance for person(s) who will be reupping this. few minutes ago i started listening to the version which is a mishmash of albumtracks and dvd rippings With SoundFX. i don't much care for klicks and bangs with music, also it had some muffled dialogue bleeds in it. not good. judging by comments in this thread, this one is the real deal, so looking forward to hearing this.
