From Classic Records:

"MASTERTAPE SOUND IN YOUR LISTENING ROOM

The Classic 24/96 Digital Audio Disc DAD is designed to be an audiophile musical reference. The process starts with the encoding of an analog signal from a live microphone feed or more commonly from an analog master tape. The highly sophisticated Analog to Digital converter (A to D) samples the analog signal 96,000 times per second (96kHz) and assigns a numerical value to each sample point. The 96kHz sampling rate is more than twice the 44,100 (44.1kHz) sampling rate used on standard CD's. The numerical value assigned at 96kHz - about every 10.4 microseconds - is stored as a 24 bit digital word. The significance of a 24 bit digital ward is that there are 16.8 million different potential values for each 24 bit word! By contrast there are only 65,536 different potential values for a 16 bit word on a normal CD. The additional 8 bits on a DAD allow for over 16 million additional voltage values to represent the original analog signal. Further, 24 bit resolution offers 144 dB of dynamic range from the softest to the loudest musical note. At 144 dB of dynamic range we greatly exceed even the dynamic range available on the world's finest analog tape machines. For the first time in the history of digital audio we can provide Master Tape Sound (MTS).

After the analog signal is encoded, the resulting 24 bit/96kHz digital data stream is stored on a large computer hard disk. The raw data is then transferred to a post production facility for "authoring" - a process that results in the creation of a digital tape called a DLT that is sent to the disc manufacturing plant. At the plant, the DLT is used to make a "glass master" which produces stampers that are used to injection mold the DAD discs. In all, the process is quite a bit more involved than making CD's but we hope that you will appreciate the extra effort when you hear what this technological wonder has to offer."

thanks for going to the trouble to upload such a massive file!

No problem. More (bigger) files on the way. And Sinus, thank you so much for the Inception Audiophile Edition. Your hard work made me decide to start sharing a few albums in my collection. Recording Sessions or not, this will be my ultimate (quality) reference for Inception.

I've had this album for a few years.

The audio is indeed better than the original CD release, except for some clipping in the final few seconds of "A Call To Arms".

The disc itself is a DVD, about 1.43 GB (if I remember correctly) in size and when you put it into a DVD player, there is no menu so the music just starts playing like a CD would, and you can advance to the next track since it's just a video title with the tracks as chapters. The on screen graphic is generic album and track information, so if you don't want to turn your television on to play the disc, you don't have to which is nice.

If anyone were to buy this now, it would fetch a ridiculous amount of money, but when I got it it was in 2007 from the Classic Records site directly and was only $15!

Keep in mind, if you download this you wont hear the difference in quality unless you have 24 bit output from your audio source. So if your computer doesn't have 24 bit output through your sound card or other DAC, you might as well be playing the original 16 bit CD.

some clipping in the final few seconds of "A Call To Arms".

Sadly.

It's more of a bassy distortion which can also be heard slightly at 0:19. At least it's not a ripping error.

You're right, the disc is a DVD with 24/96 WAV. I was thinking of posting the ISO itself but deleted it after converting to FLAC for my Colorfly (http://www.custom-cable.co.uk/headphone-amplifiers/colorfly/colorfly-pocket-hifi-c4-pro-32gb-24bit-192khz-upsampling-music-player.html) player.

Incidentally, there's a copy of this on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/James-Horner-Glory-Soundtrack-DVD-Audio-DVDA-D-A-D-NEW-/110668784679?pt=US_Movies_Other_Formats&hash=item19c45fa427) that's apparently a double-sided disc. 24/96 DVD on one side and 24/192 MLP DVD-Audio on the other. I asked the seller for further info but didn't get a reply. Tempting, but at that price, I think I'll keep my original DAD and vinyl copy.

if it's the same master, for me it's close to meaningless.

but keep those hi-res releases coming! :-)

Such a thing was never made so I wouldn't trust it as being legitimate.

Funny enough most seem to think this DAD is a DVD-audio disc, only it's not and doesn't have the compatibility issues DVD-audio does, which is obviously nice. :)

The distorted bass has nothing to do with any ripping, as the DAD itself has this. I have not downloaded these files so I'm basing that on my copy of the album itself.

For the curious, this is what the on-screen graphic looks like:

The title changes from track to track, but that's all. Not much to see!

I suspect the seller may have ripped the production method from another release perhaps. There's always a risk that it's simply upsampled to 192kHz. I gave my original CD copy to a friend and never had a chance to compare the two. Quite sad really as it was the first CD I ever bought. Is the bass distortion on Track 1 on the CD as well?

@Sinus, no I didn't. Will have to look for that one. Cheers!

Is the bass distortion on Track 1 on the CD as well?

No, it's unique to the DAD release.

Better to use lossless stereo pass-through SPDIF. Sound cards meddling with it converting to analog is sloppy.

I'd like to download this, but I simply don't have the room. I need a big hard drive.. Hell, the Lord of the Rings sets are using 18 or 19 gigabytes of my disk.

When I uploaded my "Custom Complete Score", it was the DAD version of the album I used for all the album-specific tracks.

I remember the first time I saw the DAD album in a store:

It was back in 2001 or so, meaning six some-odd years before I ordered it off the label's site. I didn't have the regular soundtrack CD at the time so I was really itching to grab this version. Only problem was its price which I'll never forget: $62.99. Yeah....no. No thanks. It's not eBay and its thousands of dollars or a promo, but still. At the time the cost was not remotely justified.

It made me wonder....does ANYONE play music on their stereo / surround systems anymore with real speakers instead of shitty logitech / insert name here computer speakers anymore?

Or am I one of the few proud holdouts?

Few..., nah "I am Legion, for we are many" proofs are all around i.e. Head-Fi.org - Headphone forums and reviews for audiophiles (http://www.head-fi.org/), Audio Asylum -- Audio Reviews, Audiophile Forums and Stereo Reviews (http://www.audioasylum.com/) and go on and on....

I do not like to go into offtop, but let me use great quote from one movie. "There are dinner jackets and there are Dinner Jackets". Studio monitor is a question of taste, profesion and hearing, but it always depend to what you are connecting them. Anyhow PMC are the good ones for average audiophile usage.

Well thank you. :) I would surely hope that people listening to high-res audio would be doing so on an actual system of some type and not through their iTunes / winamp player with two desktop speakers and a so-called 'sub'. While I don't have high-end equipment (I have much older speakers that are a bit oversized but they do me plenty!) I do appreciate what room-filling sound can do and never play music on my computer. Editing, sure. Listening...too old fashioned, I guess.

According to Jdownloader 2's linkgrabber there are a number of links that are still active. I picked the bitshare one for the 1st part, and bugger me IT WORKED.

Re-upload not needed.

I tried the Part 1 bayfiles link as well, and bugger me THAT WORKED TOO.

Correction, I tried it now and was successful with notably BitShare and SendMyWay. This is an awsome upload and I can't wait to hear it on my system. I use a customized computer for playback on my high end system. I'm always on the lookout for higher quality uploads like this as with the proper gear it really sounds much better than the standard CDs.
