Wow. I did not expect this at all. I thought they were going to do VII or I for the billionth time. I was wrong. Quite pleasantly wrong, actually.

As much as I dislike remakes and criticise Square for over-indulging in such, this has the potential to look spectacular if they take their damn time with it. But (and there's always a "but" with Square nowadays) they'll probably find someway to cut corners. My guess is they'll take out the cutscenes that don't really do much to advance the plot. Another worry I have is in regard to the music. Some remixes would be nice, but if they completely rescore the game, I'll be really disappointed. FFX has some beautifully orchestrated stuff. At any rate, this is just an announcement.

I wouldn't mind a FF7 on Vita as well, I enjoyed that game. But 10 is a great addition as well. I would advocate Square to spend their energies on newer products but after FF13/14, Square should jus quit, and rerelease all the FFs from 4-10.

Although this is one of my favorites FF i have some qualms about Square choosing FFX instead of,(you guessed it), FFVII for various reasons. For one there is no-end game exploration. Also the only thing to do, other than run along the story line, is to grab some summons and play 10 hours of Balloon chocobo racing. Blitzball even gets a bit ridiculous once you pimp your team out. FFVII had chocobo races and an amusement park where you could play the train, motorcycle and snowboarding mini games from the story and it had one of the big kickers too. Moggles, not moggle suits. Wtf is Final Fantasy without Moggles?! Anyway I am still looking forward to this remake. I'm just a little down they didn't choose any of the other FF before this one.

Will it be exactly the same in every sense? Well, obviously I would expect that of the story, but I wouldn't mind some new sidequests or easter eggs thrown here and there.

But yeah, when I first heard this I was thinking, why X? It already has great graphics and it's got the voices and stuff, what possible difference could this "HD" make? Why not remake one of the older ones?

But yeah should be interesting.

BasilCulex

Its not gonna be an entirely new remake, its just gonna be a HD remake I'm pretty sure similar to the Devil May Cry HD Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD collection and the recently released Ico/Shadow of the Colossus collection (also God of War and Jak and daxter).

If they don't include the International content, I'm not going to get it. It's just that simple. I honestly don't see much of a difference with these HD remakes anyway, and I'm not going to kill my soul trying to beat the fucking chocobo races all so that there's a little less graininess in the picture. Fuck that. I want to fight fucking Penance and the Dark Aeons! I've already replayed it to death anyway; the International content would be the only reason for me to replay it again.

I never really got into it when it came out, and although I have it on PS2 I guess I'd like to give it another crack on the PS3. I guess I just never really got into the whole voice-acting idea and a few characters I found deplorable (but there's always at least one). I think that this will be a great measuring stick to see how Square will take on the remake process if there is going to be a group of them. I also think that if people really want the VII remake they might want to consider purchasing this one because if Square doesn't see a profit here they may not be willing to look further into a VII remake (if ever - sorry didn't mean to go on a tangent)

I am really excited to see the game done in high definition, although I hope when they bring it overseas, the same American voice actors will resume their rolls. I don't know what I would do if they switched all the voices around- -that would just ruin everything.

rantThey did that to Lunar: SSSC when it was remade for the PSP; and I hated the new voice over.
That's beside the point though, non-final fantasy related. lol /rant

Yeah, I hear you. I'm in no hurry to play these games, so I'll wait for a price drop like most HD collections get. As an audiophile, though, I'm looking forward to the sound quality that only a Blu-Ray disc can offer.

I only really liked the first KH and thought Chain of Memories was stupid, so I probably won't pick up the remake. I'm not hardcore enough to buy it just for the enhanced music and remastered cutscenes. On the other hand, I'm a huge FFX fanboy, so I'll definitely be getting the PS3 double release. As Uvogin said, the music will sound better, but otherwise I don't think the score will be changed. I'm not sure whether they'll update the voice acting; I hope they will, but this is Square we're talking about. Apart from that, this is probably going to be much the same game I played back in '03, which I was half expecting. Maybe they'll be some cool pre-order stuff.

E3 2013: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Demo - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGrMMJYTrBM)

There's no question it looks better than the original, and as a hardcore fan, it's definitely worth getting (especially for the art book and other bonuses), but because I'm a hardcore fan, I'm left disappointed at how much more they could've done with it. But this is square we're dealing with yadda yadda yadda. It's probably my fault for not thinking realistically and getting my hopes up at reading the word "remake". Blame the translators at that square event.

They did more or less enough to make it presentable to an audience in 2013, which is what all reasonable people expected them to do. Hardcore fans like me probably aren't even the main audience anyway -- they were probably aiming at younger gamers for the most part (two games in one!?) who didn't play the original, but there is enough to win us over. But by god we're still going to complain about it. Why'd they have to update the command window and dialogue font? Now it looks like Kingdom Hearts.

It turns out the music in the game won't just be remastered but also remixed slightly. I never really thought about the music before this announcement, but it makes sense that they would do something like this since they did it to Kingdom Hearts. I'd love a new OST. I'm not sure if the Kingdom Hearts remaster got one, so I don't know whether Square Enix would release one for FFX, but if they don't, someone will rip the music anyway.

Am I going to have to be that guy? [looks around] I guess I'm going to have to be that guy... [sigh]

All I can say is...this remaster looks disappointing. That battle theme didn't need a remaster. It shouldn't be overly dramatic with chimes and brass. That's just going to make it obnoxious because no one focuses on the music when they're in combat, they pay attention to the combat. The music should set the tone, not be overly dramatic. If Uematsu wanted to use chimes and brass, he easily could have. He chose not to for a reason; and I have more faith in Uematsu's judgement for a musical song than in all of Square-Enix. At least he puts out good products. Now let's look at the character HP and MP: it's barely visible on the new version! Seriously, it'll cause eye-strain and is unnecessarily small. And the font they use for the damage numbers and for the word "OVERKILL" are just way too cartoonish. And overall, I just don't see a bit of difference visually between the original and the remastered versions unless they're side by side! Everything looks exactly the same: characters, weapons, enemies, landscape. I'm not asking for them to change everything--temperance is a good thing. But if I just saw the remastered version, I wouldn't say, "Hey, that looks really good, is that in HD or remastered?" The only thing that would tip you off would be the different font they used, or the different music... are they compensating for not making the remaster look any different? Now yes, I did notice Valefor has slightly more detail in the wings, and I guess the energy bit for charging looks a tiny bit amplified in the remaster, but tell me, is that worth $60?

ShinshoGurren
09-25-2013, 04:30 PM
It's not worth it if you already own both games and aren't a hardcore fan. If you haven't played both games, $60 is a fair price for two games (and an artbook if you get the special edition). Hardcore fans like me are going to go for the international versions of both games as well as that epilogue thing they're doing. But if you're neither, there's not much in it for justify $60.

I agree with you on the new text, though. The old text had a certain charm about it. Or maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

The only reason I'm excited about the new music, even though it's just some embellishments added on to the old music, is that I've listened to the old music so much that I'm a bit tired of it. At any rate, the melodies are still there.

Your post got me thinking that FFX and especially FFX-2 didn't really need remasters. Both games have aged pretty well in my opinion. Maybe in another ten years it would've been more worthwhile. But hey, Square wanted to make a quick buck, and there's just enough in there to make me want it. They sure are good at what they do.

So who's psyched for the game?

I'll admit I've been a bit enticed into playing it; I've beat 10, but I've never really played X-2 so I'm a little on the fence whether or not I should grab it.

Also if I'm not mistaken the remastered versions are $40, isn't it? Maybe that's just the price for the Vita version.

I can't even believe they're referring to this shitefest as a remake. Calling the Gameboy Advanced ports, remakes, is a far fairer venture if minimal tweaks count for anything at all. Nothing here constituted a full overhaul. Now everyone can enjoy their favourite girlyboy with a few added polygons. That's about it. Everything else is the same.

It's just as worthy of a cringe or three as the original smuck on PS2, with the same shortcomings, same terrible voice acting, and same abysmal sequel, now bundled together. This and Tomb Raider HD deserve the exact same tagline; "Because backwards compatibility would be lame."

Thing is that it's the international/last mission version that got remastered not the standard western version. FFX-2 has last mission and the extra dresspheres. I only paid $40 for it...where in the world did you get $60 as the price of FFX/X-2 Remaster? That looks like the price that KHII.5 ReMIX is gonna get.

On another note I don't see the characters speaking Japanese as an issue. I would have liked the Japanese voices being an option as I would have liked to hear the remaster of Koda Kumi's songs. I thought the English voice for the Songstress Dressphere was kind of lacking somewhere...and I didn't like it much...I stopped watching those clips after a few seconds of hearing the vocals...then I went back and forced myself to listen to it.

I'm pretty sure $60 was being tossed around on a few sites before it got released (look at the date of my post). I only paid $40 for it as well.

The differences in the international versions aren't all that considerable. If you thought the games were just okay when they came out, you're probably going to feel the same way now, extras and all. I'd say that if you enjoyed the games and haven't played them in a while, $40 is a fair price for two games, slightly expanded/remastered from their original releases.
