Hey there, guys n gals. Kind of a work-in-progress here. A "real" soundtrack album as opposed to the officially released comedy Album version of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" has long been, if you'll pardon the expression, a holy grail for me. I'm working on it now, and I don't claim to be an expert or know all the facts, but I thought I'd post and show where I'm at in my efforts.

I started working through the film (and to a lesser extent the Album) and trying to match the music to the library tracks I was able to track down. Some of the “mystery” tracks have track titles that are just made up by me to describe where in the film the music is from.

If anyone has any clean(er) versions of either the library tracks I don’t have, or clean versions (or any versions) of the individual non-library tracks and are willing to share, or at least share a source, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I’ve tried doing audio editing in the past and quickly discovered I do not have the talent or the patience to do it, so everything here is basically “as found”, and that’s also why I don’t have things that might appear fairly simple to get from the DVD, such as the section of the Mexican Llama credits, the Preparations for Battle music, and so forth.

And of course if anyone has any further information/insight/corrections/suggestions on anything, please feel free to help out!

(The titles in bold are tracks I’ve already acquired and are included in the zip file.)

(P.S. This is my first attempt at anything like this, so please be gentle. :) I've probably screwed up a ton of stuff, but I'm trying.)

FROM THE MOTION PICTURE ITSELF:

1. Wide Horizons (Pierre Arvay) - The opening chords and string attacks

2. Ice Floe 9 (Pierre Arvay) - The next part of the main titles

3. Countrywide (Anthony Mawer) - The continuation of the main titles after the first sacking

4. Main Titles IV (Title/composer unknown) - The Mexican llamas part of the main titles

5. The Big Country (Keith Papworth) - Little fanfare-ish bit when "England 932 AD" comes up on screen

6. Homeward Bound (Jack Trombey) - Used throughout the film, usually when "horse riding" is involved. (For sanity’s sake, I will not be listing every appearance of Homeward Bound within the film.)

7. God Choir (Neil Innes) - Tiny snippet behind the Lady of the Lake story

8. Black Knight fight (Title/composer unknown)

9. Monks Chant (Neil Innes) - First appearance of the Monks Chant

10. Knighting Sir Bedevere/The Book of the Film -(Title/composer unknown) - Could be two separate pieces edited together, hard to tell.

11. Camelot Fanfare (Neil Innes) - Credited to Neil Innes per the CD booklet credits.

12. Camelot Song (Knights of the Round Table) (Neil Innes) (The mp3 version I have is the “Monty Python Sings” edit which does not include the bit with the old man hanging up on the dungeon wall in chains clapping along with the song in the background)

13. God Choir (Neil Innes) - A longer version than the snippet used earlier in the film

14. The Quest for the Holy Grail animation (Title/composer unknown)

15. The Tale of Sir Robin animation (Title/composer unknown)

16. Sir Robin’s Song I (Neil Innes) - The first part of Sir Robin’s Song, before meeting the 3-headed giant.

17. Dirty Work Afoot/Three Headed Giant (Title/composer unknown) - No idea what this is, but the CD track listing at this point has In the Shadows No. 3 (Paul Ferris) and Desperate Moment (Kenneth Essex), but there’s additional music on the CD at this point than there is in the film, Iit appears Desperate Moment is the Album-only music, and In the Shadows No. 3 is the high-pitched “sting” as heard in the film as the Giant appears. (There are also tiny bits of Sir Robin’s minstrels attempting to sing at this point in the film too.)

18. Sir Robin’s Song II (Neil Innes) - The later part of Sir Robin’s Song, after he runs away.

19. Monks Chant (Neil Innes) - Animation

20. Grail Beacon (Title/composer unknown) - Could be Neil Innes, a very brief variation on the God Choir?

21. Castle Anthrax (Title/composer unknown) - Might be two separate tracks in here, not sure.

22. Scene 24 (Title/composer unknown)

23. Knights of Ni (Neil Innes) - Arthur and his Knights in the forest, then meeting the Knights of Ni.

24. Love Theme (Peter Knight) - Prince Herbert’s first attempt at song

25. Another Herbert Song (Title/composer unknown) - Prince Herbert’s second attempt at song (possibly Magenta (Roger Webb)? Listed between Love Theme and Starlet in the Starlight on Album)

26. Starlet in the Starlight (Kenneth Essex) - Prince Herbert’s third attempt at song

27. Lancelot and Concord (Title/composer unknown) - Brief music played as Lancelot and Concord travel through the forest

28. Wedding Music (Title/composer unknown) - Music being played in the castle prior to Lancelot’s attack.

29. Lancelot Approaches (Title/composer unknown) - The drumrolls as Lancelot charges towards Swamp Castle.

30. Flying Messenger (Oliver Armstrong) - Lancelot’s attack on the wedding.

31. Yet Another Herbert Song (Title/composer unknown) - Prince Herbert’s fourth attempt at song (Possibly Ode To Edward (Emile Paladilhe)?)

32. He’s Going To Tell (Neil Innes)

33. Sir Robin’s Song III (Neil Innes) - Sir Robin’s minstrels sing as they meet up with King Arthur and the rest of the knights

34. Sir Robin’s Song (Instrumental) (Neil Innes) - Instrumental version for animation sequence

35. Sunrise Music (Neil Innes) - Seasons changing animation. Listed between Jeunesse (start of side 2) and Magic Finger on Album (appears in extended form on Album in the “Story so far” section on side 2)

36. Approaching the Cave (Title/composer unknown) - Music played as Arthur and the knights approach the Cave of Caerbannog

37. Ni Sting (Neil Innes) - Another instance of the sting from the Knights of Ni music

38. Monks Chant (Neil Innes) - Another version of the Monks Chant used as the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch is brought forth.

39. God Choir (Neil Innes) - Another brief snippet of God Choir music as the Holy Hand Grenade is lobbed at the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog

40. The Cave (Title/composer unknown) - This sounds like more of the same music from “Approaching the Cave” earlier

41. Ni Sting (Neil Innes) - Another sting as the Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh attacks

42. Desperation (Ivor Slaney) - Crossing the Bridge of Death

(43. Intermission (Neil Innes) - Brief section of the End Music. I have this track at the end of my playlist since it’s the full version from the end of the film.)

44. God Choir (Neil Innes) - More God Choir music as Arthur and Bedevere continue their quest

45. Transition Piece (Title/composer unknown) - Sounds like a brief transition between the God Choir and The Promised Land before the boat appears before Arthur and Bedevere

46. The Promised Land (Stanley Black) - Arthur’s approach to the island.

47. Preparations for Battle (Title/composer unknown) - Arthur’s forces assemble to attack the island

48. Charge! (Title/composer unknown) - Charging towards the island before the police arrive (possibly a direction continuation of the previous track?)

49. End Music (Neil Innes) - Also used briefly as the Intermission music.

TRACKS FROM THE OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK ALBUM ONLY:

Jeunesse (Anthony Mawer) - Used during the “Executive Version” announcements.

Desperate Moment (Kenneth Essex) - Used as further background music after the appearance of the Giant, underneath narration on the Album. Listed during Three Headed Knight scene on Album (between In the Shadows No. 3 and Sir Robin’s Song (running away).

Circle of Danger (Brian Holmes) - Used on the Album as music from Carl French’s latest film starring Marilyn Monroe. Listed between Knights of Ni and Sir Robin’s Song (rejoining Arthur) on Album.

UNKNOWN BUT LISTED IN DOCUMENTATION:

Honours List (Keith Papworth) - Used during the announcement of the title of the Album? (from DW/LP 3242 "City Scene") Listed between Jeunesse (start of side 1) and Big Country on Album. (Not used in the film?)

Magic Finger (Keith Papworth) - Used during the “Story so far” section? (from DW/LP 3022 "Checkpoint") Listed between Sunrise Music and Fanfare on Album. (Not used in the film?)

In the Shadows No.3 (Paul Ferris) - (from DW/LP 3150 "Strange Location") - Listed during Three Headed Knight scene on Album (between Sir Robin’s Song (before Three Headed Knight) and Desperate Moment). Possibly the “sting” heard as the Three-Headed Giant appears?

Magenta (Roger Webb) - (album unknown) - Possibly second Prince Herbert song? Listed between Love Theme and Stella in the Starlight on Album

Ode To Edward (Emile Paladilhe) - (from DW/LP 3237 "Music Of Emile Paladilhe") - No clue what or where this is. Possibly fourth Prince Herbert song?

Agreed. A reupload is absolutely necessary. This is an amazing album, despite the fact it's incomplete.

@op

do you still have this in vbr? can you reup?

I'm interested in

the promised land by Stanley Black (1966, The Music Of Stanley Black DW/LP 2977 )

Did you rip the LP to get the vbr? The record is available but for example I have nothing to play LPs.

(I should probably ask Tango on this forum seeing how it's a phase 4 recording like most of Black's. And there are many nice things on it ... )

There are some very clean (although lower bitrate) rips on youtube but nobody says where they got them. Avax ... sites also do not seem to have the LP rip.
