I was wondering if anyone still played FFXIV.

After doing my 2011 tax return, I have found out that I have enough money buy a new computer, finally one that will be able to run great looking games.

Was considering getting FFXIV (primarily because it's free at the moment) and wanted to know if anyone from FFShrine played and what servers you were on?

Well, I still log in occassionally, if only to just aimlessly wander around the admittedly beautiful landscapes or beat up an occasional monster. But if you're after something with a substantial storyline you're going to be sadly disappointed, as the storyline is rather truncated (although it will be continued eventually). The very game itself essentially revolves around creating items via a clone of FFXI's old synthesis system - over half the game's 'Jobs' are actually crafting Jobs, not battle Jobs, making the game more like a poorly-executed online version of FF Crystal Chronicles in a sense.

Added to the fact that you can't even ride airships or chocobos yet (although SE stated that will added later in the year), and that there isn't even an Auction House to sell and buy with (instead, you have to make use of player-run bazaars called 'Retainers'), leads to a rather boring gameplay experience. An upside though is SE still hasn't ended the free trial period - they've extended it pretty much indefinitely 'until they feel the game has improved enough to warrant fees' - which could be another year or so at least away, so if you play now will not cost you a cent in fees for quite a while.

So, unless you're interested in endlessly synthing stuff, it might be best to wait another six months or so and see what further additions are made to the game before attempting it.

FFXIV is a dead ship Purrr... and FFXI is fast becoming the same thanks to frikkin SE's decision to get rid of direct debit and go through a shoddy third party system... I made a thread about it here: New Payment option for FFXI... and sadly, it's mandatory (Thread 92999).

In short... abandon all hope ye who dare to sail the treacherous waters in Square Enix's territory... you'll be bumrushed, keelhauled and hung from the nearest yard arm!

In english: I'd honestly leave SE, until they decide to make a decision about whether to continue with the abovementioned BS payment option (which us Australians can't even accept due to frikkin Crysta not being legally accepted here >.< frikkin stupid SE bullshit!!!) or to allow Direct Debit as a payment again. I'll post updates in that thread when more info becomes available.

Hmm ok maybe I'll hold out for Guild Wars 2. I may still try it during it's free period. I wanna have something pretty to gawk at once I upgrade.

Also I heard two timed instances were added to Eorzea? Sounds to me like the game is just gagging for content.

It was rushed to release to beat Cataclysm... and was released missing a lot of content. In short, it was a screw up right from the start. 10 months later, it's still free to play and costing SE $$$ the longer they keep it that way. No wonder they're screwing up FFXI now...

Yeah I still want to play it though to form my own solid opinion on the game. I have watched several videos on how to play and walkthoughs etc and the more I see of the game, the more I want to play it lol. I don't mind the slow-paced leisurely crafting and levequest system, and I don't understand why so many people complain about it. I remember the good old days of FFXI, Dark Age of Camelot, and Everquest where you were LUCKY to even get a quest.

I know I've said this before; but WoW bores me. I spend all my time just leveling other classes because our guild is dead and not really doing anything, and people can't make a commitment to endgame content.

FFXIV looks like a great relaxing MMO where I can put my feet up and play at my own pace in a world that just looks amazing. And it's free at the moment so I really don't have anything to lose except time....which I have plenty of at the moment.

I have been following the patch updates religiously and am quite excited about what content / fixes will be coming. If I remember correctly, FFXI also had a very poorly executed launch and Japan players had their free trial extended to compensate for the initial disastrous instability of the game.

Also Revan, in regards to your SE payment option change thread.....You mentioned Direct Debit...But do they still accept Credit Cards?

I had no idea FFXIV is free. I think I'm going to cross my fingers and hope my laptop can handle it.

They do accept credit/debit card payments, via Paypal... and via Clickandbuy. You still need to sign up for crysta to be able to register for it though. PM Enkidoh for more details as Enk has had some problems setting it up...

Okay thanks. I'll sort all that out after I actually get my new PC.

There's a benchmark which can be downloaded here: FINAL FANTASY XIV Official Benchmark (http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/)

It will give you a score on how well your PC will run the game.

At the moment my score is terrible, but once I get my new computer, I should be able to piss all over it.

EDIT: Got the game today as a present from mum. Now I just need a computer to play it on LOL

seriously what is up with SE? I mean I know we can't expect Squaresoft's games anymore, but come on... This games they are releasing lately are not up to Squaresoft's nor to Enix's standards.

As you can tell from my signature, I started playing today.

It's an odd game. The visuals, sound and story are outstanding, but there doesn't seem to be all that much to do.

I will persevere though.

And Revan: Creating an account was easy lol.

Then you got lucky. XIV's a joke though... all flash and no substance.

I actually like the core gameplay HOWEVER the fact that there is NOTHING to do while waiting for leves to reset is annoying as all hell.

Square Enix; either remove the leve restriction, or add other things to do.

Apparently SE are working on tweaking the leve system, but when they haven't said. I think the addition of chocobo and airship riding (finally!), plus the other changes planned for the next update are taking the bulk of their time at the moment.

Incidentally, I notice you're on Selbina Purrr - that's also my server too. :D My character is a Gridanian mi'qote named 'Enkidoh Roux' though. :p

Send me a Friend request next time you're in game if you want. I only have two people on my friend list. ; ;

Added! :)

I'm only Phys level 12 (Pugilist 13) at the moment and I reside in Ul'dah. I'm not even sure how to get to Gridania yet....I presume it's via the Black Shroud?

But yes, add me and we can go beat things up together. Or I can assist with any battlecraft leves you have.

Coolies. :)

Yeah, to get to Gridania from Ul'dah you basically have to head in a north-easterly direction to the Black Shroud, and then just more or less keep heading north. Luckily though, as long as you stick close to the path, you shouldn't encounter any mobs that agro.

And the good thing is, once you've visted a city and clicked on it's aethryte (those big crystals that resemble the voridal confluxes from XI), you can then teleport to that location at any time (just like FFXI), so it's worthwhile to make the journey to other cities on foot at least once. ;)

You've changed servers Purrr? I just added your Selbina character to my Friend List too. :(

I can't talk though, as I went and created a second character on another server too - although my new character is on Istory, due to the constant nagging of a friend. :p

Selbina Enki will still be my main though.

Heya, I had to change servers just to get into a Linkshell - It was a nightmare. No one talks to each other in FFXIV and I found Selbina to be populated, but incredibly anti-social.

Even though I'm on Rabanastre with my main, I still have an extra character slot; so I will use it eventually to create a character on another server; either Selbina or Besaid.

Right now I'm Marauder rank 30 and really want to focus on him. He's a Midlander Hyur, so sexy :)
