JAWS.

Without a doubt, the Beard's best movie. He has yet to top this one, a perfect blend of drama and thrills, with well defined characters. Watching it today it is still as exciting and suspenseful as it was back in '75. Yeah I'm an old fart and saw it back then lol. Watching Raiders today it feels clunky and stagey in parts - even though I love the movie - it isn't as magical as it once was.

Jaws though...still has power.

That is my problem, too.

Even though I adored 2001.

That's tough but I have to go with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Wow, that's a cool choice. But I wouldn't put it at the top of my list. It's so hard to pick one favourite.

The Shawshank Redemption. The acting, the story, the score, the lessons. No bullshit, no sugar coating, no god-awful romance. Everything in that movie is excellent. I'd say it's one of the best movies ever made.
imdb agrees. ^^ I have to watch that film again. I think the last time was a month ago. I totally agree with what Morgan Freeman said about the relationship of the two main characters. It's rare to see a film about true friendship. And I personally think it also says a lot about human behaviour and how predictable people can be. It is more profound than a first viewing can reveal.

And Tim Robbins' acting was brilliant.

I couldn't even come up with a top 10. There's so many films I really love. I love many films for many different reasons.

Lord of the Rings was a long-time favourite of mine. I am totally looking forward to The Hobbit.

Here's a list of the films that first come to my mind:

- American Beauty
- American Psycho (Saw it for the first time this year and even though it's ridiculously mind-bending, I loved all of it.)
- Trainspotting
- Shallow Grave
- Pay It Forward
- The Shawshank Redemption
- The Pianist (I also only saw it this year, I have a lot of catching up to do. It was brilliant. And one Academy Award I can totally agree with.)
- Little Children
- Finding Nemo
- White Oleander
- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (I was impressed, also by the acting.)
- The Devil's Advocate
- The Lion King
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (I am so glad I watched that one.)
- Point Break
- The Matrix
- My Own Private Idaho
- The Times of Harvey Milk (A great documentary, even better than Van Sant's drama.)
- Up
- The Ghost Writer
- Shame

I also really liked Ron Howard's Dan Brown adaptations.
And basically all films by Sofia Coppola, even Marie Antoinette.

Hiya Jasonjhn,
That's Platoon, no? The actor's Mark Moses (as the Lt. who wanted to be liked). Great film, great filmmaker (imo).

As for mine ... wow, it's a tough ask to choose even one title in each genre, let alone a single film across the board. If I had to grapple with it, and choose a Top 5, I'd probably say (for varying reasons and not ranked in any order):

Dances With Wolves;
2001: A Space Odyssey;
Dead Man Walking;
Wages of Fear and
Brief Encounter.

As stated before, there are too many genre's to choose from and time points. For science fiction I always distinguish between pre/post 2001. Pre 2001 I'd pick Forbidden Planet or Day the Earth Stood Still. Post 2001... well 2001. Foreign films probably Rashomon (or Cocteau's Belle et la Bete. Western - High Noon. Action- Gunga Din, Mystery - several Bogey films say The Maltese Falcon. Sport - Field of Dreams (the end always gets to me. My father gave up his chance to pitch for the Yankees so as to better care for my grandmother). The list could go on. For story, my favorite is the original Lost Horizon (a bore for many but it just resonates with me). Many of my picks are "old" films, but then I'm old too. Many of todays scifi/action films substitute substance with cgi (not all but many). My $.02

It would take someone putting a gun to my head to only choose one,because I could easily pick one of 8 or 9 other films that pop into my mind at this moment.

In that case in would be North by Northwest. Maybe the finest movie score I've ever heard to go along with an amazing Hitchcock film.

I have too many.

Ask me to pick one and I'll probably say Air Force One, because I'm ridiculous. As much as I adore things that make you think, that carry weight and messages, the only universal constant is that everybody, at some point, just wants to switch off and watch something entertaining, slightly mindless, "rainy Sunday afternoon".

For me, Air Force One is the highest-quality example of that.

Other candidates include Summer Wars, Star Trek: Insurrection, a handful of James Bond films, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Batman: Under the Red Hood, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Clue, Toy Story 2, the second and third Jurassic Park films, Man of Steel, The Mummy and a whole bunch more.

My ALL TIME favorite movie ever (this is also my older brother's favorite movie) is Back To The Future. It has everything you want in a movie. That's right, I know this movie by heart. Some days I'll just be subconsciously reciting scenes from the movie. Here's one:

"No, wait, Doc. Doc. The-the-the bruise on your head, I know how that happened. You told me the whole story. You were standing on your toilet and you were hanging a clock, and you fell and you hit your head on the sink. And that's when you came up with the idea for the flux capacitor, which is what, makes time travel possible."

I typed that all from memory. Honest to God. Shit, now it's stuck in my head, thanks a lot. ;)
