I'm still waiting, too. They might still be getting people in the concert hall.

Greenboom98

Since my WMP sometimes lag, I'm using VLC player... copying the Windows Media player (DSL) link to "open network.." and it just works just fine... Don't think it's locked to countries...

arthurgolden
07-09-2011, 07:14 PM
Oh. I feel stupid. I just clicked on the "Windows Media (DSL) button and it started. Thanks for the help. :D

The direct stream link is WDR TV Event Web-M (http://www.wdr.de/wdrlive/media/wdr-tv-event_web-m.asx)
I'm watchting it right now for the last 15 minutes, without any hiccups :)

I'm loving that the medley started with Omen from Final Fantasy VI, although every time the pianist plays my speaker overloads and buzzes.

Chocolate Misu

That direct link to the stream isn't working for me but I did get it to work in VLC ^______^ Yay!

I didn't know Arnie Roth was from Mannheim Steamroller originally. I was about to say he's gotten himself a pretty nice gig doing all of these vgm concerts.

arthurgolden

Here's the setlist for what they're playing:

Final Fantasy
I. Grave - Allegro
II. Adagio cantabile
III. Allegro molto

King‘s Knight
A Pretty Day Out

Chrono Trigger
Silent Light

The Final Fantasy Legend und The Final Fantasy Legend II
Main Theme
Save the World

Final Fantasy X
A Fleeting Dream

The Last Story
Spreading Your Wings

Final Fantasy XIV
On Windy Meadows

Blue Dragon
Waterside

Lost Odyssey Suite
I. Prologue (Main Theme)
II. A Formidable Enemy Appears!
III. A Sad Tolten
IV. Dark Saint
V. Light of Blessing - A Letter
VI. Epilogue (Main Theme Reprise)

Spoilered just in case someone doesn't want to know. King's Knight is a weird choice. But that's probably like the rule where, when you're talking to a famous actor, you're supposed to bring up the obscure ten-year-old film nobody else knows. Maybe they're trying to impress Uematsu enough to come out for this. No evidence yet that he's there.

You're welcome again. :D That was one crazy version of "Silent Light" from Chrono Trigger. Without the backing strings and with the vocals taking the melody, it sounded really different.

So I wasn't going crazy then? I thought something got changed in the set list O_o I found it kind of funny with the men in the chorus just making sounds :p Kind of like "what are we doing?" "I don't know..... make sounds..." "sssssssssssssss"

arthurgolden
07-09-2011, 07:59 PM
No, it was definitely "Silent Light." But I had to play the song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW3KNnZ2ZiA) for a second while they were doing it just to convince myself I wasn't going crazy. It was an interesting take. Definitely wasn't my favorite, though.

And what was with the hissing.

They nailed the last one. That was "On Windy Meadows" from FFXIV. Really turned it into something lush and beautiful.

I'm really digging Waterside here..... so pretty.

Greenboom98
07-09-2011, 08:58 PM

By the way, the announcer reminds me of Vincent from Silent Hill 3 LOL :-D It's just weird :-D

arthurgolden
07-09-2011, 09:05 PM
Yeah, they did an excellent job with Waterside.

I caught Nobuo in the crowd. But I was late pressing Print Screen and the camera was moving, so all I have is a blurry picture of him. :-\

^^ By all accounts, Blue Dragon is a mediocre RPG. But there are moments in the soundtrack that are fantastic. I particularly like the ones that are more rock-oriented.

Whereas with Lost Odyssey, I love the way Uematsu mixed electronics and the orchestra. My wife is a classical composer, usually not at all impressed by video game music, but she had to give Uematsu credit for LO. It's one of my favorite soundtracks and has as its main theme one of my favorite melodies in all of vgm.

---------- Post added at 03:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:01 PM ----------

Notable tracks from Blue Dragon that are worth checking out:

The Land Shark is Coming!
In Search of the Ruins
The Frozen Village
Mecha-Robo Corps Charge!

Chocolate Misu

Surely they'll have Nobuo come on stage at the end. I'll be disappointed if they don't :(

coopercoolio
07-09-2011, 09:07 PM
I was a little unsure about the first half of the concert, but everything since the intermission has been fantastic. Uematsu's melodies have been allowed to take the centre stage, just as they should.

arthurgolden
07-09-2011, 09:12 PM
I assume so.

Sad that there are so many empty seats.

^^ I agree. The arrangements have focused more on tension and release in the second half, rather than trying to use each section to highlight one element of the composition or the other.

I flew over from Ireland to see it. 2 of my friends couldn't make it so I had 2 spare tickets. Figured I would sell them before the show. When I got there, there were loads of people who were selling spare tickets. Im guessing everyone booked more than they needed cause it was gonna sell out so quickly.

Show was incredible to see live. The videos don't really show how big the hall really is. I was amazed when I first walked in.

My highlights were the 2nd and 3rd parts of the Final Fantasy Concerto, the lead Violinist for Waterside (a song I thought I would have no interest in) and A fleeting Dream.

I was disappointed that there was no sign of FF8/9. I was hoping they would work in parts of Melodies of life,Liberi Fatali, Don't be afraid or The Landing (which has never been played by an orchestra!)

I got the impression that they were taking less risks this year due to people grumbling about the Metroid/Starfox tracks from last year. Silent Light was the only strange track and that worked out perfectly by only having the choir. That was the only track I was worried about before the show as it didn't seem like it would translate well to an orchestra.
