I loved this game so much as a kid, and was disappointed when i couldn't find a decent soundtrack up for download anywhere. So i decided to do it myself :)
I transcoded these straight from the game's GBS files, so they have excellent quality.
Most tracks play twice, have an eight second fadeout and two seconds of silence.
Includes Music and SFX GBS files.

I've never really played those ones. But i'll look into it, because i enjoyed doing this project and was looking for other possible titles to rip.

Glad everyone likes it :)

By far the best rip from this game I've ever heard. Very, very well done.

Small request, though it's up to you: any chance of doing the Oracle games?

Any chance of doing the Oracle games?
I think so, yeah. It's harder because they're games i've never played before. If the information available on the soundtrack is anything like Link's Awakening (I.E. None), i'd have to use a walkthrough to make sure i find all the music and can give the tracks decent names.

So don't expect it within a couple weeks, but it's definitely something i'd like to do.

Well just to clarify, it would be more appropriate to say that you "transcoded" the tracks from the GBS rip. Saying you "ripped it" implies you did the work of extracting the sound programming from the game ROM (that is, made the GBS rip). You just did a transcode of the rip. Not to say it's not appreciated, it is indeed time consuming and a pain to get the track timing, tags, and order correct, especially for formats that don't allow that information to be tagged within the rip itself (like GBS). It is indeed valuable and convenient to have them transcoded to MP3 and other more compatible formats. That's all I do too, is make FLAC/MP3 transcodes of rips someone else did. :) Maybe someday I'll get off my lazy ass and learn some programming as to help those over at HCS and elsewhere do some actual ripping and the like.

I think I was the one who helped you over at HCS about how to go about making these transcodes. :P

GreatWhite
06-16-2011, 08:58 PM
Ah! True. I guess that would be the more accurate term, wouldn't it?
Fixed. And thank you.

EDIT: Though, in the thread title, GBS rip would still be accurate, because that's the source.

KGN-004
06-16-2011, 09:19 PM
Well you could say "GBS Rip Transcode". :P

Yeah it's okay to use the terms interchangeably I guess. Usually I just put (GAME RIP) next to the title of the transcodes I do. I don't even know why I brought it up. I guess I was thinking about if I had spend a lot of time making rips, but seeing the guy who just did the MP3 transcode get all the praise... That would be kind of annoying. :P Now that I bring it up, I'll try to find out and credit the ripper whenever I can.

GreatWhite
06-16-2011, 09:29 PM
I wondered about that. I couldn't find anyone to credit the actual GBS file to. I thank the site i got it from in the info file, but there's not much to do after that.
Especially when one site got it from another site that got it from the site the ripper posted it to, which contains a dead link now and there's no way to know if maybe someone else ripped it, too, and the whole credit situation is all messed up.

It would be simpler if i could just figure out how to rip the files myself, which would also help when GBS files are missing certain songs.

Yeah I'm sure there's still quite few games that need to be ripped, and incomplete rips, and rips that were done incorrectly and sound messed up which need to be fixed.

There's tutorials and stuff to get you started on learning to do it. The only thing stopping you is you. :P

I've been trying to get into programming and such myself. Got the sixth edition of Deitel's "C++ How to Program". Great book, pretty easy to understand so far. But that has nothing to do with your topic here. :P Anyway, thanks for timed and tagged GBS transcode. ;)

Hey, this track listing looks pretty good! I have two other versions of this soundtrack: one that has mostly every song (minus a couple) but it has the high-pitched tone associated with Gameboy games (and SFX), and then the other version is incomplete and several of the songs don't even loop through once.

I don't comment under the VGM threads much, but I look forward to taking a listen to your hard work. Thanks a lot!

You do realize transcoding is taking one lossy format and converting it into another lossy format right? XD

No, not necessarily. "Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion of one encoding to another... transcoding can be lossless if the input is losslessly compressed and the output is losslessly compressed or uncompressed."

I guess going from nsf/gbs/etc to wav isn't technically lossless? But for simplicity we'll say it is.

"Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion of one encoding to another. This is usually done in cases where a target device does not support the format or has limited storage capacity that mandates a reduced file size, or to convert incompatible or obsolete data to a better-supported or modern format. Transcoding is commonly a lossy process, introducing generation loss; however, transcoding can be lossless if the input is losslessly compressed and the output is losslessly compressed or uncompressed. The process of lossy to lossy conversion introduces varying degrees of generation loss. In other cases, the transcoding of lossy to lossless or uncompressed is technically a lossless conversion because no information is lost, however the process is irreversible and is more suitably known as destructive." -Wikipedia

Ah, yes, keyword, COMMONLY... >.<

I think it is, but there's a possibility it's not truly lossless. The game boy uses a sample rate other than 44.1KHz.
Though, since the audio is rendered as you play (the best way i can describe it, may not be totally accurate), foo_gep must render it at 44.1, but i don't know the inner workings of the software and can't say for sure.

Yah, I don't think it's compressed, it's more like a midi; it uses synthesized sounds from memory (most of which are square and 25% pulse waves, which, when programmed into memory, don't take up much room at all)
So, technically it is a lossless transfer.
=)
Plus, they had no compressed audio back then that was decent haha... i.e. .mp3

Yeah, that's right. What i meant, though (and i should have phrased it better), was that the original Game Boy used a different sample rate. I'm not sure if it would be required to use that same sample rate to be able to emulate the machine and play the files, and then resample the files to 44.1.

I'm pretty sure they would find a way around something that important, though, since all tracks would be rendered and played inaccurately.

I love flac, and find it's a shame that so few people give the option as a download.
Plus chiptunes are really well compressed. In fact, 26 songs in this soundtrack manage a lower bitrate than the 320kbps mp3 files (as low as 42kbps).
Glad you like it :)
