After releasing the first 3 James Bond films on Laserdisc in a 2-disc CAV format in 1991, Criterion was asked by EON Productions (producers of the James Bond Films) to recall all unsold Laserdisc product.

They felt that the audio commentary tracks on the 3 titles were unacceptable to Albert R. Broccoli, one of the original producers of the 3 films.

The people on the commentaries Bruce Eder(Film Historian), Terence Young (Director),Peter Hunt(Editor),Ken Adam(Production Designer),Richard Maibaum(Writer),Guy Hamilton (Director) speak their minds and say pretty much anything they feel with no reservations.

Like the screenwriter of From Russia With Love Richard Maibaum calling Ian Fleming a "Snob", or Director Terence Young recalling Chris Blackwell's (founder of Island Records) affinity for marijuana.

Ideally this is best listened to whilst watching the film since much of the commentary is scene specific, but it is still a great listen on it's own.

I bought all three LaserDiscs when they were released and within 6 months all three had been pulled and the "offending" commentary tracks removed from the new pressings, although for awhile the secondary commentaries were available on cassette from Criterion.

WildwoodPark for the win, again!

I can't wait to listen to this commentary -- sounds very promising. And that's a definite "yes" as to whether I'd like to hear the other two as well.

Thanks!

I have posted the other two as well.

One thing that I haven't done before is to cue up the audio commentary with the new Blu-Ray releases, the last time I watched them together it was the standard DVD's.

I just took my IPOD and played the commentaries back through my home theater system while watching the video.

Here's a really random question: you don't happen to own the laserdisc for The Halloween Tree, do you? I know they released a version of it that had commentary by Ray Bradbury.

Just curious--been trying to find that commentary for a while.

i love this kind of commentary. you don't hear people associated with a film saying these sorts of things much in official dvd commentaries anymore. just shows how touchy and political the film studios and producers can be. thanks for the link

Feel free to post more Laserdisc exclusive commentaries if you have them. I've got to transfer the commentaries for Singin' in the Rain and Carrie.

I used to have this LaserDisc, I backed up most of my LaserDiscs on VHS tape including commentaries on it's own tape but I am not sure I backed that one up for some reason.

I will check my collection and make sure.

This is great i have always wondered about the three Bond criterion laserdisc commentaries. Sounds like you own From Russia With Love and Goldfinger too. Will you be posting the others?

Ahhh, NM ;-)

bummer eon didn't allow them to do commentary for all the films. it would beat the boring john glen and michael wilson commentary tracks on the current editions.

Sometimes you hear about stuff you never imagine you'll actually find. This is one of those. And (as usual) WildwoodPark comes to the rescue. This is absolutely terrific. Thank You!

Thank you for this. I still have this but never took the time to convert it to digital. I made a DVD copy for my cousin, but he lost it! Love hearing the late Peter Hunt talk about the "murderous things" they got away with in regards to editing. My favorite commentary of all time.

These LD Bond comms are brilliant, WP.

I wonder if there is a way to build them into a a DVD rip of the corresponding movies? Timing issues may be a problem, and I'm not savvy enough to even attempt it.
