Taken from Joystiq = Square Enix to reveal new MMO by April 2012 (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/square-enix-to-reveal-new-mmo-by-april-2012/)

Even though Square Enix has yet to iron out all the kinks in Final Fantasy XIV, it plans to announce a third MMO during its current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2012). According to CEO Yoichi Wada, the title will co-exist with the company's two existing MMOs, the aforementioned FFXIV and still-running Final Fantasy XI.

In Wada's recent investors presentation (translated by Andriasang), the CEO doesn't indicate when the company plans to launch the new title, but does say that the game should be announced before the end of the fiscal year -- so by next April. For now, Square Enix is focused on shaping up the troubled FFXIV in hopes of an eventual release on PS3.

Hasn't FFXIV taught SE anything? Why release a new MMO, when the current one still has so much work left to do, to fix it.... and I'm still skeptical about a PS3 release of FFXIV....

Oh how the mighty have fallen...

Yeah I read this yesterday and I laughed....a lot.

Also they will be focusing a lot more on new IPs and not just spitting out the garbage we've played a million times over.

I used to respect Square Enix, but I've been burnt too many times.

Ofc it's easy to maintain FF14. How much do you pay for servers that have zero players on them?

They should be working on getting Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix released here in the US and start working on Kingdom Hearts 3. Heck, I would even settle for some ports of Birth By Sleep and 358/2 Days...

This is fackin' amazing :D

But seriously Square . . . seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!?!?! Already? After botched FFXIV failed, time to pump out another rushed, botched failure?! I think their move to rush XIV out before Blizzard's Cataclysm was a death wish. So now what, they're gonna try and fix it up, finish it, then rerelease it? They better outdo themselves tenfold if they want any kind of acceptable results! And on the topic of their new MMO . . . my hopes suffered a nosedive before takeoff. I'm a devout Squeenix fan, as I love every game from I - XIII. But the FFXIV business has gotten my hopes way down for their foreseeable future :-/

Firstly, FFXIV does have a fair amount of players active - why wouldn't it? The free trial has been extended indefinetely so it's essentially a 'free MMO' at the moment.

Having said that though, FFXIV still needs a lot of work -the development team is working on improving it, but there is still a long way to go before it's potential is finally realized. As it stands at the moment though, unless you're interested in endlessly synthing crap, don't bother with it.

Secondly, their new MMO - well, to be fair to SE, this probably isn't an actual IP being developed in-house by them, but rather an independent IP being made by one of the many other international development companies SE recently purchased, which allows SE to boast about 'a new MMORPG project' while at the same time being able to distance themselves from the inevitable flack they'd cop about FFXIV's ongoing problems.

If it is being developed by SE themselves though, and if it dare comes out with the Final Fantasy VII: Online moniker attached to it, I'm claiming my soul back and cutting all ties to SE. ><

My bets are on Dragon Quest Online or some shit like that. But of course some big pile of bullshit like FFVII online is another big possibility.

IMO what Squeenix should do if they want to make another MMO. Make some MMO based in the Mana series, make it like Legend of Mana but with a more complicated battle system. The sheer amount of quests and things you can do in that game is simply amazing.

I'd like to see them do more with Dragon Quest because that series is way better than Final Fantasy!!! However if they do make a DQ MMO I probably won't play it because MMOs suck and S-E make bad MMOs.

In regards to FFXIV; Like Enkidoh said above, there are a lot of players online. I presume it's because the game is free and basically in an Open Beta state.

The two main things that annoy me in FFXIV are:

*Nothing to do except grind (after doing your quests)
*No one talks to each other

So okay, Naoki Yoshida is doing a great job to try and fix the mess that FFXIV currently is. But by the time the game is fixed (and maybe even re-released) I would've jumped ship to Guild Wars 2 and be all like "WHO ARE SQUARE ENIX?"

Also another thing that annoys me about SE is no Versus XIII for 360 or PC ><

Here's more info about Dragon Quest X

After years of speculation by fans, and silence by Square Enix, Dragon Quest X has finally been revealed. Dragon Quest X will be coming to Wii in 2012 and Wii U at a time to be determined. The game will be an online RPG. The Wii U version is said to be graphically superior, though both versions can work together. Dragon Quest X is being developed internally by Square Enix, a first for the series.

The formal title for Dragon Quest X is "Dragon Quest X Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku Online." According to our friends at Andriasang, that roughly translates to "The Five Awakening Races Online."

For its Wii release, Dragon Quest X will ship not only with a disc, but a USB, presumably to allow the system to support post-release content. The game will support Wii Remotes with Nunchucks, Classic Controllers and even USB keyboards. There is no mention of support for GameCube controllers.

As expected, Akira Toriyama is handling the character designs, with Sugiyama Koichi composing the game's music. DQX is described as having a huge story, spread across five continents and five different races. According to Andriasang's translation of the event, the game will feature a job class system, though few details were provided. Players will be able to create their own characters as well as weapons and accessories, if they have the proper job skills.

Square did show video of the Wii version through pre-recorded, in-game clips. Precisely how many players could play simultaneously was not mentioned, calling into question how "massive" this online RPG might be. However, footage did show groups of players fighting alongside other groups. Clearly there are still plenty of details to be revealed. On Wii, the game could loosely be likened to 2005's Dragon Quest VIII for the Playstation 2. Japanese site 4Gamer has released a screenshot. See it below:

Dragon Quest X will be supported with post-release content. One important detail about the game - you can complete the game offline. While playing online will allow you to become an ally to another player, offline players will find those roles filled by NPCs. Players can also allow their characters to still be used as NPCs, even when they're not playing. Square is planning a beta test for the title.

Though not outright confirmed, Square did mention it is looking into possible Nintendo 3DS functionality. The idea of being able to transfer characters to the system to then SpotPass transfer to friends was specifically mentioned.

Square not only introduced Dragon Quest X for Wii and Wii U, but provided updates on a variety of other related titles. Dragon Quest Collection for Wii is due out September 15. Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 3 for the 3DS will arrive on November 2. Itadaki Street Wii (known as Fortune Street here in the United States) will arrive in stores on December 1. All of these release dates pertain to Japan only.

So far, it's only on the Wii and no word if it'll be on PS3/Xbox 360... still, I'm not that fussed about the DQ series, so meh...

That and the fact that SE has screwed around with FFXI, ten years into it's duration to support the payment option for FFXIV (which is becoming more and more like FFXI-2 imo).

It's not going to be on PS3/360.

And it's on the Wii U as well, bro. They've also said they're thinking about doing something with the 3DS. And then there's those NES/Famicom screenshots which could be real or could be an elaborate joke by S-E.

... I didn't say it was going to be on PS3/360... I said "So far, it's only on the Wii and no word if it'll be on PS3/Xbox 360". Handheld consoles don't interest me at all, and the Wii is just a gimic console (I can't take this as a serious console, considering another definition for this console's name is a bodily function in waste management).

Still, can help but admit that the DQ series does have it's fanbase, so I'm pretty sure they'll be excited about this. Though... don't expect it to be a fee free MMO, as SE will undoubtedly throw out subscription fees per month on this.. and I'm willing to bet that the payment option will be in damn Crysta...

The words you used implied there is any question to whether it will be on 360/PS3. There isn't - it's going to just be on Nintendo consoles.

It's okay if handhelds don't interest you. I wasn't trying to make the game appeal to you. You said the game was Wii exclusive - it's not. You should try and understand language better or something, man.

The Wii has a lot of great games and it's a shame you think as lowly of it as you do.

I don't think there's any indication SE will go either way with the fees. I'd say it's possible they'll put monthly fees on it in Japan, but this won't necessarily mean there will be fees in every region. For example, Monster Hunter Tri (and G, but it was only released in Japan) has fees in Japan but not in any other region. I bring this up because it's a Wii game and from a franchise about as popular as Dragon Quest is in Japan. Both series also don't have a huge fanbase in other regions. We'll see soon enough though, I'm sure.

The game does require you be online for most of the content, but they've also said you can finish the game by yourself as well. I'm hoping if the game is pay-to-play there will be two methods of subscription: one that's free and opens up enough of the online to allow you to get through it all by yourself and one that's paid for the all the MMO-y stuff.

The words you used implied there is any question to whether it will be on 360/PS3. There isn't - it's going to just be on Nintendo consoles.

In that case I apologise for the misconception... From what I read in that article, there's no mention of 360/PS3, so I was unsure whether or not it'd be ported over or not.

It's okay if handhelds don't interest you. I wasn't trying to make the game appeal to you. You said the game was Wii exclusive - it's not. You should try and understand language better or something, man.

The only reason I don't like handhelds, is because I suffer from severe migraines from playing a handheld for too long. Also, I said that "So far, it's only on the Wii", as at this time, the only info about it IS for the Wii only. In that article it has, and I quote "Though not outright confirmed, Square did mention it is looking into possible Nintendo 3DS functionality." I take that to mean, that while SE is looking at maybe bringing it to the NDS, there's nothing concrete at this time to say "Yes, it's confirmed that it WILL go to the NDS". Still... never can tell, but IF it did go to the NDS, I doubt it'll have full online capability where the Wii would. I mean, playing a MMO on a handheld just doesn't seem feasible to me....

The Wii has a lot of great games and it's a shame you think as lowly of it as you do.

It may have some, I don't deny that nor will I ridicule for someone for having one etc. So far, there aren't any games on it which interest me at all... though I admit, I am slightly interested in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, as I have Path of Radiance on the NGC... but I can't justify buying a console solely for one game.

I don't think there's any indication SE will go either way with the fees. I'd say it's possible they'll put monthly fees on it in Japan, but this won't necessarily mean there will be fees in every region. We'll see soon enough though, I'm sure.

Considering how SE is heading with the payment options for it's other two MMO's, even though XIV has been free to play since it's release (and being a financial sinkhole) and with their 'enforcement' for XI gamers to some new payment option to feature Crysta (which I won't go into detail here... I made a thread about it in the FFXI subforum if interested), I honestly wouldn't be surprised one bit if they did put a payment plan on this.

They may do that, have two options... you select whether to go for the MMO experience, or just stay with the solo console version. That'd be the best of both worlds...

I still get a kick out of this. . . . Come on SE, haven't you learned by now? In the days of Squaresoft, the FF games were released at an acceptable pace; adequate time was given to develop each game, and the resulting product was an instant classic. Nowadays, Square-Penis–ah, I mean ENIX wastes all the energy on flashy stuff and feeding consumer demand as fast as possible. People are more patient than that, you morons! We don't want a rushed game, we want a carefully crafted product! I've said something similar, but it deserved restating. I was hearing about FFXIV before XIII was even released. Then XIII-2 was instantly in the works, XIV was hurried onto shelves, and now they're already handing us another game. . . .

Granted, it's different teams working on each project, but the unity that was once there is evaporating. Uematsu's gone, which is a total shame; he was half the heart and soul of FF back in its day. I dunno, I'm just rambling . . . but 'understatement' has a new definition: SE will never escape the hole they've dug.

edit: Oh, and FFXIV will never be considered a classic; they've ruined its reputation and legacy, and possibly their own with its utter failure.

As XIV is still Free to Play, almost a year after it's initial release (and despite all the 'work' they're putting in to make it better), it's a financial sinkhole. If they don't put a subscription fee on it in the next month or so, it'd be better if they just cut their losses and shut it down.

The more I play FFXIV, the more I actually think that SE probably should stop making MMOs. FFXI was a success eventually but that also had a lot to do with the time it was released when all there was to compare it with were other 3D mmorpgs like Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot and Lineage. In hindsight, these games were cumbersome and awkward to play and had a steep learning curve, but rewarded the faithful and those who dedicated more time into them.

Times have changed, MMOs have evolved (look at Guild Wars 2 for example) and to me it seems that SE just don't want to change their 2001/2 method of how MMOs should work.

While FFXIV is definitely more solo-friendly (and I welcome this) everyone who plays knows that it is far more effective to level in static parties or grinding groups; a method that is now frowned upon by most western gamers beginning with MMOs since 2004 (when World of Warcraft introduced quest progression and lore)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good grind, and I really enjoyed it in FFXI because the game was a lot of fun. But these days people are not going to pay a subscription to a game which gives no sort of instant gratification, no context to the quests that you're doing, makes it more effective to party grind, and gives you little to do other than endlessly craft stuff.

I know that if this game doesn't change dramatically from what I'm playing now to the FFXIV I'll be playing when they introduce subscriptions, I am taking my money elsewhere. I'm sorry SE, but nice textures and good lighting won't make a great game; it needs to be a game that is enjoyed.... and not endured.

I had almost the same sentiment after they unveiled that XIV would be an MMO–the day before they released it, LOL. I have never seen a game so rushed on us :O They don't seem particularly interested in change in the MMO department, and I'm almost afraid to see what they have in mind for the upcoming MMO on their list–that is, if they don't decide to call it quits beforehand. A lot has changed since FFXI, but yet their ways haven't. I don't know whether to get my hopes up for XIII-2 (how the hell would you even say that? Thirteen-two? Sounds so much more awkward than X-2; Ecks-two. . . .) but it's fast becoming my last option to trust these guys anymore. If they flake out on their sparkly new MMO I wouldn't be disappointed in the least, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna stay as loyal a customer if they slack off on single player games from now on :-/ And as for MMOs in general, with the overall scope of games like FFXI, WoW, Runescape, Everquest etc. (which get updated all the time) I'm amazed SE thought XIV would be even remotely a good idea, considering it's basically an HD FFXI.
