Redline (REDLINE Reddorain?) is a 2009 science fiction auto racing anime film produced by Madhouse and released in Japan on October 9, 2010. The directorial debut feature of Takeshi Koike, it features the voices of Takuya Kimura, Yū Aoi and Tadanobu Asano, and an original story by Katsuhito Ishii, who also co-writes and sound directs. The film is set in the distant future, where a man known as JP takes on great risks for the chance of winning the titular underground race.

After a total of seven years in production, Redline was intended to premiere at the 2009 Annecy International Animated Film Festival and follow Summer Wars, Mai Mai Miracle and Yona Yona Penguin as the fourth and final feature film Madhouse planned to release between summer 2009 and spring 2010. However, further delays saw its world premiere pushed back a few months to August 14, 2009, at the Locarno International Film Festival and its Japanese release to fall 2010.

This film took forever to complete, but I'm glad the blueray is finally out. Though I heard it kinda flopped in japan -- the sales were considerably low for a movie of this quality.

I don't recall anything particularly memorable from the OST with an exception of the final song: REDLINE DAY (feat.Rob Laufer), which has good lyrics and is kinda catchy.

Well I just watched the anime. Two things: 1) I didn't think the music was at all noteworthy and deleted the soundtrack instantly without even listening to it. Typical synth-driven anime soundtrack with a lot of excessive bass beats. 2) I didn't think the anime itself was anything special. The only way it compares to Akira is that they both have crazy giant mutant creatures towards the end. The movie was almost nonsensical in its lack of plot, without giving much significance to the race or the motivations of the characters trying to stop it. I wouldn't waste your time watching it just based on the "mind blowing" trailer.

I'm a bit more optimistic about this one -- it delivers the goods in the field of animation and definitely has a sense of style & speed. There's no need to compare it to Akira because both a very different genres and have totally different goals to achieve. And I think Redline succeeds in being an entertaining popcorn race flick.
It is not a time waster -- sometimes you just wanna watch something simple yet fun.

Pros: cool and original designs of the world and creatures, incredibly fluid animation, full of energy and fast action.
Cons: flat plot and no character development, generic techno soundtrack.
