The Quality is really awesome. I'm just wondering if Diviner's Theme, the original Mokai Theme and Rohn's Theme were not used in the game because I found them in an old gamerip and on the ost but this version does not include them.

yes they are not in the game. OST exclusive.

tazermonkey, would it be much trouble if you could upload all (even the unused ones) the tracks sepparated as they are in the game? i had got comfortable with an edit i had done out of the original rip and i would like to reconstruct it with your excellent quality files :)

Thank you, Tazer, most sincerely... Finally that atrocious old rip can go in the bin.

I'd also like to add my voice to those who are (cheekily) asking for the original files, before editing? Or tell us where the various original cues are within your arrangement? I know it's a pain in the arse but it would be lovely to have (or be able to reconstruct) the cues in their original cuts. :)

I really don't think this is complete, but perhaps one of the most complete collections. Quality is good, but I'm not crazy about how the tracks are combined at all.

I actually had the music hall play while I recorded the whole thing on a DVD, then ripped it and cut the tracks up. The only problem mine has is the first track has a small skip and some are a little loud. :P
Need to re-edit it though.

Press Pause in game; there's Rohn's theme. The Diviner's theme, not sure, but I know it plays in the ending cut scene of the night-mission where you destroy the energy plant thing.
Don't recall the Mokai theme in-game.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Not such a cheap remark he made.

Even though I greatly appreciate your upload, I see his point. A true gamerip is most likely a straight rip of the game music, track by track, as it comes. But doing suites out of it is already a personal interpretation of this music, and each has his own approach to it, more or less artistically pertinent. (I didn't have time to listen to yours, but I guess you did some good job!)

That's why answering for a direct, un-reconstructed gamerip isn't so silly. In fact, I would be interested in it too, since my way of listening to music is rather "fragmented": I generally listen to each piece individually, trying to understand and feel its own particularity.

So, if you have time of course, please also upload the direct rip!

Can you tell me names of orchestra and chorus ?

I know this was asked ages ago, but the game booklet credits an orchestra of London session musicians and the London Voices.

Also, for when I up the rip, is there greater demand for the "raw" files -- comparatively, no way I'm upping 96kHz files, guys, sorry -- or would you prefer the files after hiss reduction?

TazerMonkey
11-23-2011, 12:39 AM
The only new material is that the iTunes versions of Civilization Theme, Rohn's Theme, Diviner's Theme, and Mokai Theme (along with a snippet of Last Straw, and Darkness as a bonus) because I now consider those themes essential and the sound quality of the music that can ripped outside of the "concert hall" is severely compromised and is worse than the iTunes album. This is a new, higher quality rip of the "concert hall" material supplemented with official album material, if that makes sense. The only music ripped during gameplay included is the "bonus" of Rohn's Theme simply because I actually prefer it without the vocal and wanted it to be available, even if it doesn't sound so great.

if anyone is still interested, the music crediting of the game is:

Music composed by John Debney
Orchestrations and additional music by Kevin Kaska
Music conducted by Nick Ingman
Performed by members from the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Symphony Orchestra and the London Voices
Erhu performed by Karen Han
Wind instruments performed by Pedro Eustache
Lyrics and vocals by Lisbeth Scott and Tanja Tzarovska

There is synth choir, probably to augment the sound of the real chorists. or maybe its sampled, and the performances for the samples were the london voices'.

TazerMonkey
01-11-2012, 03:38 PM
The orchestra was comprised of London session musicians. To ascribe any specific orchestra's moniker to the soundtrack is misleading. The "official" credits from the game are listed on the artwork I made that's now in the first post, as well as some of Debney's thoughts on composing the score I culled from an interview.

Also, the fact that the entire score was recorded in two days is mind boggling and makes my fingertips hurt from empathy.

Where can we download the mp3 version since that's what most people are after anyway?

tangotreats
02-07-2012, 11:01 PM
The thought occurs that if one downloads the FLAC version, one can transcode it to whatever other format one desires. The further thought occurs that it's somewhat presumptuous to assume that "most people" are after the MP3. The final thought occurs that whilst the MP3 version can be derived from the FLAC, but not vice-versa, it is logical to concentrate on keeping the FLAC download alive first since it has the capacity to please all whereas any other would only please a subset of individuals.

A postscript thought occurs that in the current climate of filesharing, combined with the inescapable fact of this splendid album being offered for free, one should express gratitude for what one does have rather than grouse about what one doesn't.

Why is it that not one person in ANY thread (not just this one) with similar complaints EVER takes the initiative, downloads the FLAC, and uploads an MP3 version of their own in order to assist their fellow downloaders?

TazerMonkey

I have just updated the first post with links to the unedited rip -- the files recorded from the Concert Hall, as well as the in-game version of Rohn's Theme (no vocal) and the end credits, which, as explained above, are not of the same fidelity but are included for completeness. The only processing has been to trim the leads and tails and downsampled to CD quality as I don't have the bandwidth to upload 96kHz/32-bit files. Also included are the AAC files from the iTunes album of the themes not included in the ripped files.

So, once again there's two choices: this rip is available in my album presentation or unedited to be used as you see fit. Enjoy. :)

^Pretty much a guarantee that if you're a fan of Debney (i.e. "Cutthroat Island") you'll like "Lair."

RE: the premise, to be honest, I have absolutely no idea what the title has to do with the game or the story. I think maybe the title is a holdover from an earlier iteration of the game that just happened to stick because it sounded cool in relation to dragons. As is, the story isn't bad but just a bit underdeveloped. If the game had been a fully-fleshed out RPG instead of just a fairly generic arcade flying shooter, it could have been really cool.

The music is top tier, though. Gargantuan, bold, and dramatic. It's too bad that Debney doesn't often get to cut loose like he's able to here.

TazerMonkey

^I don't understand your post.

1) It's embarrassingly easy to convert from FLAC to mp3. If you have any computer savvy at all (and because you are on this forum, you clearly do), it will take you a fraction of the time it would take someone else to upload an mp3 version of the album. Not to mention that mp3 is obviously of lesser quality than FLAC. If one version is to be provided, and considering the clusterf#$@ that is the world of file sharing today one version is all that I have time to maintain, it should probably be the best possible version, yes? (This also explains why I no longer upload the "bare" rip, because it doubles the bandwidth of the archives I have to maintain and, for me, it is less satisfying.)

2) The official iTunes soundtrack is also lossy (although 256kbps AAC vs. mp3), dynamically compressed, and contains just a little over half the music offered in this version, which also contains all the music that is "exclusive" to the official album. I have never found the official album shared in its native AAC (not in an active link, anyway) and had to purchase it to obtain that music in the best available form for my edit (as I could not obtain a copy of the pressed promo CDs). It is inferior to what is offered here, other than the fact that it is "official" and this edit is not.

I hope that explains my reasoning. Others are welcome to offer either, but I won't be providing an mp3 link or the iTunes album.

But how to convert it quickly without having to rename every track in the ID tag?

I will have to bookmark this for later, but in the meantime have my thanks in advance.

What are you using to convert the files? Foobar does it in seconds and keeps all the tags.

Some potentially great news: it appears that after six years, La La Land Records is preparing to release an official, physical LAIR soundtrack sometime this year!

FYI, if/when an official announcement is made, I intend to take down and withdraw this rip in support of La La Land's release, barring some unforeseen circumstance.

Now that is some great news, if it is true! Looking forward to it.

Since a post today by MV Gerhard on the FSM forums indicated that it will still be some time before La-La Land (or any other label) will be able to release Lair, I decided to go ahead and restore the original post of this thread with art and a track listing, as well as adding new MEGA links. Since Herr Salat's upload is still active, I added that to the OP as well (hopefully he won't mind).

Thanks for your original share John Debney - Lair (FLAC RIP) and recent re-up. Unfortunatelly it seems you have forgotten to provide pasword for file JDLRIP.7z.

Edit
Thanks for fixing.

Well, it's finally happened...

This rip is now withdrawn in support of La La Land Records' official release, announced today and to be released on April 8. I ask that my rip no longer be shared or distributed or mirrored. If you downloaded this and liked it, it would probably be a good idea to reward La La Land for their efforts. It might be interesting to compare their release with the various rips.

Thanks for understanding.

That's awesome news. Thanks for putting forth the effort to have your own rip set up until this happened!

from LLL release

This official release contains almost everything important. Only major thing missing (for me personally) is the first epic minute of the epilogue.

Tazermonkey, do you still have this?

If so can you re-up just this part, mentioned above, missing from the LLL release please? Somebody posted an mp3 version, from your rip. 52-epilogue

Thank you much in advance :)

You, my friend, are in luck. I actually thought that I had deleted my rip but I found a copy in my backup. I will happily upload that track, but since I'd prefer to only have to upload once, is there any other material that was in my rip but absent from the LLL release that anyone would like reposted? I'll wait a couple days to give people a chance to request.

btw, just in case the one I have have labelled as 52 epilogue is renamed

the epilogue is ~4 min and beings very loudly (the large orchestral part cut from LLL)

Also,

Was there ever an orchestral recording of the Battle Variation #1 -- the hero? They included the synth version on LLL but Ive never heard the full rip so I don't know if there is an orchestral version too or not

I don't believe there's an orchestrated version of this.
