I know this is the non game music forum, but Akira Yamaoka is the first name that comes to mind. I don't know how he works, I don't know how he sees in his head what he does to write the music he writes, he is incredibly creative. His work is very refreshing in a time when so much has already been done, and people are just doing things better then before, or doing the same thing differently. He's doing new things, and it's, freakin' fantastic.

Brian Eno is the next name that pops into my head. His work with procedural and generative music is really interesting shit.

I don't see how game music is any different than any other genre of music. The artists, composers and writers working in the gaming industry are talented individuals, just as people working in the commercial music industry are. Music is music, and my favourite musician, or music artist, if you prefer, is Akira Yamaoka.

Lady Gaga is doing something extremely right. She has a bead on the current mainstream music scene in a big bad way. The woman knows how to write songs that cater to the mainstream music audience, it's pretty damn impressive.

Currently, I've been into a lot of classic stuff... I really love The Beatles (given), The Police, Journey, Santana, Depeche Mode, Yazoo/Alison Moyet, Duran Duran, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Billy Idol... Growing up I used to listen to a lot of R&B, and I still have some favourites like Toni Braxton, Jazmine Sullivan, Aaliyah... For Japanese music, Utada Hikaru, Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, Dreams Come True - pretty much all the divas, or diva fronted bands... Kpop - 2ne1, Big Bang, SNSD, DBSK, Girls Generation TTS, G-Dragon, Jaejoong... I have a fair share of pop I listen to as well - Britney, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, Sam Smith and Gaga... Videogame composers - Jun Senoue (Sonic), Naoki Maeda (of DDR), the rest of Konami's sound team (seriously too many to list), the rest of Sega, and Shinji Hosoe (Ridge Racer). That list is really long, so I'm stopping there... Miscellaneous stuff that doesn't fall into these categories would include Arash, who is a Persian singer (I'm Persian, so I get my fair share of Persian music and Bollywood), A.R. Rahman... I pretty much listen to anything that's not country music.
