Magical Drop F

This is the 4th game of the Magical Drop series, released on the PS. A friend introduced me to Magical Drop III some years ago and I’ve become a fan of the series since. It’s a fast paced, simple and addictive puzzle game that is easy to pick up where you break bubbles vertically and try to create chains that send attack patterns to your opponents side. The game features characters based off the tarot card deck. Magical Drop F was kind of a disappointment for me though.

All characters have nice, revised themes, special abilities (new to the MD series) and they are well drawn and less cartoonish than they were in the previous games. The disappointment comes in the games speed which is far too slow, even slower than the Snes games. All MD games are known to be fast paced when making chains and fending off attack patterns. The bubbles break slowly in this game so its waaaaaay to easy to make chains, but also so slow it becomes boring specially in survival mode. The other disappointment comes in the games difficulty which is far too easy, especially for hardcore MD players or ones that are accustomed to the Japanese challenge version of MDIII. The cpu AI is laughable, even using a weak char like FOOL you could win.

All characters have two themes now. When a character activates their special ability, they do a cool transformation and an arranged version (second theme) of their music plays. World is the only character that doesn’t seem to have a second theme, because she doesn’t start with a special ability. The game hints at her having one, but it may have to be unlocked and I haven’t figured out how to yet.
