Ever since 1989, I was a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series. A year later, a full length feature film was released and I was completely stunned. I thought it was impossible for film score to be released (the music soundtrack still ninja-kicks butt), until you show up and hit the motherload. Although the SFX are there, but never lets down DuPrez's original score from the picture. Thumbs up for you, Takehiro!!!!

No. This is the 1990 film score of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" by John DuPrez. The Klaus Badelt score is simply titled "TMNT".

OHHHHHH!!!!

I have been searching for the score to this film for the past two decades since its release. The most I've ever been able to find is a really crappy techno remix of the main theme and the Shredder Suite, which did contain my favorite cues from the film so I was quite happy when I found that. This is completely unexpected and ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! Or, I should say, totally tubular dude!

You never cease to amaze. Thanks again!

If I may make a slight request...

You say you're working on a longer version. It would be awesome if that can include the piece before the final battle where the Foot Soldiers are storming the sewer. One of my favorite pieces of the score and the one thing that feels noticeably missing.

Still, beggars can't be choosers, and this is still fantastic. Thanks again!

The DVD stems on the R2 DVD were pretty low-fidelity (as well as being PAL, which involves slowing the audio down, losing a bit of quality as well).

If you use an audio editor like Audacity which allows you to change the sample rate, you can restore any PAL-sourced piece of music to its original playing speed without a loss in quality.
The steps are as follows:

Take the audio file which must be at 48000 Hz, and load it into the audio editor. If it's right off a DVD, it'll obviously be 48000 already, otherwise you would have to make it that.

Set the sample rate of the file itself to a custom rate, being 46033 Hz, and you will see the audio file stretch back into its original speed, 4% slower and without any quality loss.

Export the audio file to WAV at either 48000 or 44100 and it'll be all good to go.

KaFaraqGatri

Thats the wrong way to do it.

JHFan

Thats the wrong way to do it.

No, it is absolutely not the wrong way.

There is no quality loss at all. It does not re-encode the audio, it does not cause any distortion that pitch-shifting software does. I've done it many, many times and it is flawless.

KaFaraqGatri
05-11-2011, 06:23 PM
Any sample rate shift causes quality loss, right?

Hopefully, one of these days, a non-SFX version will pop up.

Interesting that the British edit has been mentioned. Did you guys know that even the US version was toned down. That scene where Master Tatsu is angry and attacks one of his foot soldiers.. In the released version, coughing sound effects and voices saying "You are going to be OK" are edited in, but the original intention, even as it was filmed, was that he was killed. It was slightly darker, but nowhere near as dark as the original comic or the very first screenplay, which apparently had the Turtles cussing and drinking beer. Other deleted scenes included an alternate opening, where we panned down into a sewer cap, which blows open, and through the sewer, and to their doorstep; a shot of April passing by some docks, with a pan down to the water, where the shells are bobbing; and April's lost monologue of Mikey for the Farm sequence (Mikey is actually the one who took Splinter's disappearance the hardest, and had a scene where he takes out his anger on a punching bag, from which a few split seconds appear so briefly in the final cut, that if you blink, you miss it)

I often find that the first film is the very best incarnation of Ninja Turtles.

KaFaraqGatri
03-01-2012, 06:00 AM
Very interesting! How do you know all this?

sgtfbomb
03-01-2012, 07:34 AM
A couple of the deleted scenes I mentioned are in the original trailer. Others were in the comic book adaption (which was actually reprinted for the Blu Ray collection), and several years ago, somebody on the Technodrome Forum posted scans of the shooting script.

First Movie Script. - The Technodrome Forums (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=13507&highlight=screenplay)
I have the script for Teenage Mutant NinjaTurtles TheMovie - The Technodrome Forums (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=10100&highlight=screenplay)

The Tatsu thing is rather obvious once you know, and especially if you know editing.

Another tidbit, Sam Rockwell has a minor roll in the film. His first scene was toned down. In the film, you hear him say "Grab her purse!" but notice how you don't actually see him saying it. In the edit, you hear it as they rush towards. In the screenplay and the comic book adaption, and even clearly filmed, it was to be heavily implied (but not actually said) Rockwell and his croons robbing the news van were actually going to rape April! The dialogue exchange was similar to "I have money!" "We'll take it...after!"

Also notice how Rockwell's character is seen in the background, holding his arm like he is hurt, during Shredder's introductory speech. This one I know from the trading cards, as a shot of it was depicted, Shredder actually had Rockwell and his gang fight him, and lose. He's also the guy that says "regular or menthal?" and then has a back and forth with Casey at the end over being a "family."

If you really pay attention to the US cut, you'll notice a lot of odd things, like when the floor collapses, Leo is already downstairs. He and a foot solder end up fighting all the way down to the basement prior to its collapsing.

The shooting script had a lot of bad dialogue. For example, the "Ahh! The rat! So it has a name, it had a name!" is so much better than what was in the script. Considering that the Turtles, the Shredder and even Master Tatsu were dubbed over (the workprint and the trailer shows the original voices), it was a pretty easy film to change, dialogue-wise.

Skeet Ulrich is also an extra towards the end of the film. You can see him behind Sam Rockwell in a few shots.

KaFaraqGatri
03-01-2012, 08:52 AM
Most interesting! I noticed Sam Rockwell a while ago. I also knew about the dubbing - but the voices they chose to go with are pretty awesome :)
Its weird that Josh Pais is the only actor to provide the character and voice for a turtle. I'll have to check out the trailer now!

I wish a copy of the DuPrez's score for TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze would pop up, even with light SFX. I love that rising cue as they find the abandoned subway station and that great cue as they battle the foot in the junkyard.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the other cues from the first film turn up, like the music when the foot are heading in the sewer, when the Turtles head back to NYC, and when they are battling the foot in their lair.

Thanks for the link and the original up! The first two turtles movies, super mario bros. and a few others were filmed in my hometown, so these have a special place in my heart. I didn't think there was an official release, so it never hit my radar.

Had I been older when this was being filmed, I would have KILLED to ask the (I believe he was a producer? i can't remember honestly) living next to my uncle for a copy of the score. Of course I would've been shot down, but it would've been more productive then just saying "cool" and standing there like "well where are the turtles then?" haha.

Thanks again!
