Sonic X Reply With Quote Reply To Topic
So I just started getting into the Sonic franchise. Don't really care much for playing the games but I am watching the cutscenes on YoUTube and starting to read the comics.

Along with all that I started to watch the Sonic X anime. I'm 22 episodes in and my general thoughts so far are these

1. The dub isn't as bad as a lot of people say. (surprise surprise) So far most of the voices are unremarkable but of course I adore Dan Green as Knuckles. I also like Ortiz as Amy. I know a lot of people don't like Ms. Ortiz but I think she fits Amy's fiery yet comedic character really well.

2. Speaking of which, from what little I knew of each character's personality and stuff, I figured Knuckles would be my favorite character. And I was right. The episodes with him have been the best so far. So I'm glad he got the best voice.

3. Sonic is a really bland protagonist... I'm used to not liking main characters though. But there is a real problem with him in this series. He has an unfailing pattern of taking off then showing up and beating Eggman or whoever else is the villain.

Now from an out-of-universe view, it's clear they are just shoving the hero out of the picture to create drama. But when you think about it from an in-universe perspective it makes Sonic look like a totally selfish jerk. His friends get attacked every day and he has no compunction about leaving them or flatly refusing stuff like cell phones so the can call him in case of emergency.

4. Aside from a few episodes this show has been...average. I got a long way to go still I know which is why I'm sticking with it. Shows like this need time to get really going.

5. Eggman is pretty...not threatening as a villain. Funny though. Reminds me a lot of the old Sonic cartoon; the one where Urkel voiced Sonic. This Robotnik even has two whacky robot sidekicks like in that version.

So yeah, anyone else here watched Sonic X? Thoughts on my...thoughts?

The dub isn't bad.... when you only watched the american version.

Ok, the dub itself is good, the characters do have some awesome voices, indeed. But they cut too much stuff. They even removed some minor Sonic Adventure 2 references on Sonic X... and most of the dialogues were completely changed(some dialogue were based on SA2 cutscenes, and american dub just made new things up)
That's 4kids. Would be an awesome studio if they were only there for dubbing, not cutting\editing.

Oh, and the dub music is also very good.

I'd give a 4 out of 10.

I'm probably gonna be the only other person with a positive reply

but as someone who actually likes modern Sonic (well up to the Sonic Wii games) I actually kinda like it

I actually think the Sonic modern characters are entertaining but the games hold them back by not having them interact a lot. Sonic X fixes that and has some interesting scenarios. Though yeah having humans around all the time is kinda lame sometimes.

Episodes 53-78 (Season 3) gets rid of the majority of humans and has a pretty cool plot that I enjoyed the whole way.

It kept the one human no one wanted to be kept.

I didn't mind Chris in that season since he got considerable less screen time and wasn't nearly (if it all) 'whiny'/clingy

I actually like the dub for sonic x I don't like the meterex saga though. Of course the japanese version is almost always better then again the opening is also much better in japanese as well xD But yea for something 4kids coughed up the dub for it is actually not that bad.

You have to take into consideration that the show was originally pretty bad so 4Kids could only do so much to fuck it up anymore.

The original Japanese version was still pretty bad... at least 4kids made a somewhat catchy opening (like the One Piece dub in a way; shit but with a quirky opening).
Most video game to anime adaptions are usually shit though, so it's not surprising.

the removal of LIVE AND LEARN automatically killed the dub.
and whoever thinks this was agood, is wrong, and in denial
