First came Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the MSX2 then followed by a reworked and tweaked Metal Gear for the early NES. After the success of these games and a new genre, tactical espionage, an unofficial sub-game was released under the name Snake's Revenge. This wasn't as popular and it wasn't 'til late '98 that we saw a new Metal Gear game... Metal Gear Solid for the PSX, this was the series' main selling point as this fast became the 'Greatest Game for the PSX' with it's highly versatile sneaking system. It wasn't too much later 'til we recieved Sons of Liberty... So what do you think about these games? Discuss anything and everything MG related here!

I played the NES version of Metal Gear, and found it quite good, with a really cool plot twist right at the end which had me saying "Woah! I didn't see that coming!!!" Though the final boss (a human) withstanding 10 rockets seems a little unrealistic... Oh well, that's games for you.

My love of the first game pushed me to buy Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation and it absolutely rocked! I plan to get MGS2 now that I've got a PS2. First things first though, Final Fantasy X...

The MSX version, graphically, control-wise, and story-wise was much better than the NES one. In the MSX version of Metal Gear, you did not know who the leader of the terrorist group was untill the end of the game, where you found out that it was actually the commandeer of foxhound, "Big Boss." He had been relaying all of Snake's messages to the enemy. In the NES version, the enemy general's name is given at the begining as Vernon CaTaffy, but was still later revealed to be Big Boss. Another difference was the change in starting point for the game. The sewer entrance in the MSX version is so much cooler than the "air raid". It just seemed like KoA threw the story out the window for no good reason at all. A few characters were also taken from the game and the extremely bad text translation all lead up to a shoddy, haf-assed NES Metal gear. MSX purists wouldn't be able to play through the NES game without thinking that it's another, inferior, game. If you really like Metal Gear, download the rom as it's been translated.

I only read the Metal Gear book (yes there was a book about the first game) and it was great. Told the entire storyline and some characters i recognized.

Yeah they wrote a book, but in it Snake didn't smoke, Fox Hound was called 'The Snake Gang' and much other stuff was changed. However the basic storyline stayed.

I still cant get over the fact MGS2 was like 40 hours of cutscenes and 5 hours of gameplay. that annoyed me, but MGS for psx was i think one of the most awesomest games ever.

It was actually *alot* less than 50 hours... gameplay time includes the cutscenes and I beat the game in under 10 hours... so yeah... only about 4 hours cutscenes really cause I stuffed around *alot* in the Tanker. It was good that way I'm really patient with games and love to watch the cut scenes...

50:5 ratio was exaageration and yes MGS2 did have way way way more cutscenes than gameplay. If you could skip cutscenes and knew where to go youd be surprised how fast you would have beaten it.

I haven't heard of most of those games except Metal Gear Solid that game was really awesome but I think there is a lot of better games then that one.
