This is the better disc. Some time after the initial release Gerhardt had the opportunity to extend the suites without the previous cuts. Even though there have been releases since of complete scores of some of of these works- somehow these shorter suites still remain the better listen. Thus if they have reissued the shorter version- skip it. (what a dumb thing to do) This is the best.

Hear, hear. I love Korngold, I really do, but he lays it on pretty thick; all the Golden Age composers did. Divorced from the film they accompanied, I find the music far more digestible in gorgeous, succinct chunks like these Gerhardt suites.

I also couldn't believe how lethargic the Previn recording sounds compared to this. How the hell that disc received Grammophone's accolades, I'll never know.

Well regardless of the differences, I am picking up the recent re-issues because of the low price and also I heard that they sound a lot better because they use the audio from the LP masters.

I might pick up the re-release of the shorter presentation just to get Gerhardt's reading of the "Captain Blood" Overture. That's the one piece I feel is really missing off this disc. I'm sure Gerhardt left it off to be included in an extended suite for a new Errol Flynn album presentation, assuming that he would be able to reprogram the entire Classic Film Score series, but of course he never got around to completing that project. There are a couple of others as well.

As far as I know, this is the only one of the albums he was allowed to rearrange on his own terms.

Personally, I have Previn conducts Korngold version. I would have liked well listened to this one but the file of the part 1 seems at once corrupt on my downloader. Would you mind checking ?

Thank you all the same for your good intentions... ;)

Stampedes I had some issues unpacking the files myself, but you have to make sure you have the proper 7-Zip program (which is different from RAR and ZIP) for your OS -- and make sure you unpack the files (unlike myself who, originally, packed the first file, rendering it corrupt and necessitating a second download).

Thanks for this, btw. I finished listening to it a couple of hours ago and it's quite a gem!

Samuel, thank you for your explanations. I had not dared to start the download and now I can follow your advice. Thank you again.

I see we agree on the musical quality of Korngold. He has not had an Oscar for nothing with Robin Hood!

:D

Act II:

Everything very well took place thanks to you. I do not have more than to enjoy...

Old movies music sound so different from modern ones. But it is still great music even if sometimes monotonous when the pace slow down. I especially enjoyed the song at the end of "The Constant Nymph"

Out of curiosity, can anyone who has heard both THIS disc (not the Dolby Surround version) and the newest release compare the sound quality? I'm still thinking of picking up the new version so I can finally have the Captain Blood overture, but an informed opinion would be most appreciated.
