A Better Tomorrow is a 1986 Hong Kong action film which had a profound influence on the Hong Kong movie-making industry, and later on an international scale.

Directed by John Woo, it stars Chow Yun-fat, Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung. Although the movie was made with a tight budget and was relatively unknown until it went on screen due to virtually no advertising, it broke Hong Kong's box office record and went on to become a blockbuster in Asian countries. The success also ensured the sequel A Better Tomorrow 2, also directed by Woo, and A Better Tomorrow 3: Love & Death in Saigon, a prequel directed by producer Tsui Hark. It is the #2 of the Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures.



The Soundtrack
The most common soundtrack to this film is the "A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2 OST" from the Japanese release. These soundtracks are actually reinterpretations of the original music that's heard in the film. I have managed to rip some of the music from the Fortune Star Remastered version of A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2. Mostly from ABT2 since they didn't remaster the music which was easy to remove the dialogue without removing the music.

These are the actual and original songs heard from the films. They are not available on the soundtracks.

For operation commenced, there's an extended version in the english dub. however, it's cut and spliced in places. if you could rip and loop the song to go how it's supposed to go, that would be awesome.

And, one more thing, I am doing a new album with all the music cues that appeared from A Better Tomorrow, I mean that I am gonna do a complete soundtrack album from the film, I know almost all the tracks that appear in the film and it's versions, but there is one that I can't get. The track what I need appears in ABT 2, in the church shootout scene, when the little chinese girl get shot. I know that the music cues from this film are from films such as No Mercy (1986), Birdy (1984), Parole De Flic (1985) and from Extreme Perjudice (1987), but my question is... does somebody know if the theme from the church is a music cue from other film or it was composed by a chinese, Joseph Ko? If it is a music cue, I will download an album from the film that contains the track, if not, I will rip it from the film. So, does anybody know something about the song?

@RUS98 during the scene when the guys are waiting for ko ying pui in the car, the song continues for the whole chase and ends when ko's car falls in the water. i have the old english dub so that may be why. in the new cantonese dub, due to the dvd distributors adding sound effects, the song fades out during the chase and comes back at the end.

Thanks anyway!!! I have seen 3 different versions of each part (the 1st and 2d) and I must say that the tracks change, for example, operation commenced appears in different speed and rhyme in some versions of the film. It's too bad that nobody released a complete OST, what I am going to do!

52 Pick-Up (1986) - Some tracks like: The Abduction and Leo Gets It Up appear in ABT2.
Parole De Flic (1985) - Tracks like: Containers, Chantier Buildings, Confession Rainer and Dynamite Salem appear only in ABT2 film.
Birdy (1984) - One of the tracks appear in both A Better Tomorrow films.
Extreme Perjudice (1987) - The track: Set Up appears in ABT2 when Ko is negotiating with the mafia.
The Starman (1984) - Track named: Roadblock appears in ABT2 when Kit is deadly wounded.

I`ve searched in Wikipedia and Imdb for soundtracks for the 2 films and I found that all the soundtracks from that films were used in A Better Tomorrow film series!

If you download the OST albums from all that listed films, and if you listen them all, you will be suprised: in every album you will find that some tracks also appear in A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2!!!

The other strange thing is that in the restaurant shootout scene in A Better Tomorrow 1 you can listen a chinese song, but in some versions of the film you will find that the chinese track was replaced by 'Operation Commenced'!!! Honestly, it is my favourite track from the film, but I still prefer the chinese song! So, here you have all the information about all the music cues and the original A Better Tomorrow soundtrack. I`ve tried to rip out the entire movie music, but I don`t know how to use karaoke filters to remove all voices and sounds as you do!

It seems that the ost is out of print and that it was only released for vinil and LP. But that ost has the tracks that I need to complete the compilation. If someone has it, please share!!! Because it has the exact compositions that appeared in ABT2. First of all I will take all the tracks from other films, the ones that appeared in ABT 1 and 2, and then I will download the japanese ost from ABT (it is not the complete Ost), and then, when I'll have all the track that I need, I am going to edit or mix them as they were mixed in the film. For example: the theme that bonked sent me where appears the car chase, the theme from that scene was the track called Operation Commenced, but at the final of the scene, appears the music cue from the french film Parole De Flic (1985) listed before, so, what I am gonna do is mix the 2 tracks as they were mixed in the film, and then the work will be finished!

Sorry for late reply, but I found this out a couple weeks back. If you have a dvd, it should be fairly easy. Just burn the audio, but make sure it's the 5.1 surround sound mix. After that, plug the sound into audacity, go to "Effect" then go to "Vocal Remover (for center-panned vocals). If you're lucky, then that should remove all the sounds leaving you with the music.

Bringing this thread back from the grave. I placed the "A Better Tomorrow 2" audio track into audacity (it was one of those stereo remasters, with multiple audio channels instead of the original mono track), and clicked "Split Stereo to Mono Track". To my surprise, I had a somewhat clean version of "Operation Commenced"! I fiddled with it a bit, and spliced it together with the version already on here to create an improved extended "Operation Commenced". Enjoy!

You can check my Youtube channel by my nickname, RaudioCsar! There's another interesting fact, the thing is that at the end of the Operation Commenced track you can hear a music cue. There is the final part of Pino Marchese's score for the film Parole De Flic, the track's name is Chantier Buildings.
