Under Fire is another entry of Jerry Goldsmith in the music sounds of Latin American, after experimented the same sonorities on scores like Breakout, Caboblanco or High Velocity. None of them, though, excelled Under Fire in my opinion.
For it contributed much the presence of Pat Metheny in the guitar, to give a latin flavour to the music which together with the orchestra punctuated here and there with synths, and folk instruments like the pan flute, marimba or maraca, creating a strong and vibrant score in example tracks like 'Bajo Fuego' or 'Nicaragua'.
Even outside the context of the film, it is a great listening experience. I myself don't even know how many times i have played the track 'Fall of Managua', and still can't get tired of it :-P. It's simply a jubilant piece of music and one of the many highlights of the soundtrack.
There is also a place for a love theme. It is a heartwarming melody and can be heard in the tracks 'House of Hammocks', or on the last moments of '19 de Julio'. But the most satisfying moment of the theme is heard in 'A New Love'. A moving piece played for strings and counterpointed with the acoustic guitar and the pan flute. It's a sublime music moment and one of the best love themes that Jerry composed in his career.
Enjoy :)
