Trust me - if you like any of Williams' scores for Indiana Jones, you will love this :)

I agree with dspani - a MOST UNDERRATED score! The measures on this one are extremely complicated and though the Hungarian Orchestra has been criticized at times for their playing, they hit the nail on the head in their performance on the maestro's score for this one. We miss you, Jerry.

Indeed underrated... can you believe that this score was nominated for Razzie award for worst score??? What a bunch of loosers...

Nominated for a Razzie? Are you serious? The film, sure, I can understand that, but the score? Jerry sure got a bum assignment with this one - but no moreso that most of the movies he ended up scoring... Sadly, it was the story of his life to wind up working on the knockoff cash-in pictures - usually following John Williams... Star Wars (Williams, 1977) to Star Trek (Goldsmith, 1979). Superman (Williams, 1978) to Supergirl (Goldsmith, 1984). Raiders (Williams, 1981) to King Solomon's Mines (Goldsmith, 1985).

Despite that, his work was always a cut above. This one is easily one of the best adventure scores of all time.

It does suffer at the hands of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra, who do a lot better than usual, it has to be said... but if ever Jerry wrote a score that cried out to be performed by the National Philharmonic in London, it was this one. Some of his fast brass runs (which are npt easy to play) get turned to mush, and just about every track has a humiliating bum note or two, or some serious intonation issue, etc. This is one of those scores when you've just got to say "WHO CARES?!" because the music itself is so great, it transcends the crappy performance... just like all great art - the presentation doesn't matter as it's what's inside that counts.

Next, on to Alan Q. and the Lost City of Gold. Maybe just the music though.

Ha ha...Having seen this at the cinema in the UK upon its original release I have a very soft spot for King Solomon's Mines and it is one of my favourite guilty pleasures. I watch both 'Mines' and 'City of Gold' every once in a while (Mines more so!). Goldsmith is a master but his work on this film is amazing. An awesome soundtrack.

I thoroughly recommend everyone to give this a try, you won't be disappointed! :)

I've managed to finally find a link to this movie score in the last 2 days and do treasure that the search has ended.

To reinforce the opinion of GeoScore,see the signature at the bottom of my post. I've never even seen the movie and will take it on faith that it ain't all that hot. My opinion is based on a 15:00 soundtrack suite I downloaded about a year ago.

I just saw a documentary about Rocky IV and its international cultural impact last night (with an extract from mommy Stallone's self-help video K7, capitalizin' on her son's success, and some babblings from Reagan seconds before a declaration at Camp David, where his already Alzheimer'd mind commented on the fight scenes of the movie), and it included an interview with the creator? Director? of the razzie awards, mentioning that Stallone, the actor and his movies, won every prize all through the eighties. You could see that it wasn't for any ideological reasons (since Stallone is a hard-working self-made good movie director RIGHT-WING BASTARD), but plain jealousy for his success.

So, down with the razzies and thanks for the music.
