As you all know in some of the FF games you can rename the characters or summons.

This thread is for sharing some of those names be they funny or damn wicked.

I'll start with one of mine as an example.

I called FF IX's Steiner- Rusty. (I thought his armour clanked and clattered a lot)

Share as much as you can remember, also if you want, you can give your reasons why you gave those names in the first place.

Nowadays, I never change my characters' names; I leave them just the way they are. But back in the day, I would always go find a Namingway in FFIV to rename my whole party after my favorites among the cast of whatever great new game I'd bought. For instance, every other weekend at my father's place back in the day, where he owned Dungeon Siege and later DSII, I'd engage in some of my now-favorite PC games of my younger days and when I'd return home on Sunday, I'd hop onto FFIV and within no time I had Gyorn, Shikra, Naidi, Rusk, and Bolingar all prepped for battle, matching each FFIV character's job class with the closest resembling default class of their namesake in Dungeon Siege. Ah, if only I'd still expressed an interest in this by the time FFIVAdvance came out; being able to switch out my characters would've meant endless possibilities. Fun times, fun times.

Generally I keep the default character names usually, although I do remember my first playthrough of FFVII I accidentally deleted the 'd' of the the end of Cloud's name, unintentionally renaming him 'Clou'. :p I ended up soon losing that save file anyway so I had to restart from the very beginning, and this time around, I left his name as default (and I still have that ultimate save file too, which is now over 12 years old).

Earlier FF games (like FFI) where there wasn't default character names I usually just named after either friends and family, or characters from stories I was currently writing at the time.

I love naming the characters see and I was curious what everyone else did.

I personaly couldn't stand the name Squall in FF VIII so I changed it to Ardyn. I still call him that in Dissidia even though the name is right in front of me lol :).
Rinoa became Lois and I called her dog Madrado. I know strange, but hey that's part of the fun right?

So what did you name the Warrior of Light? I can think of plenty (some not very complimentory....well he is an insufferable goody-two-shoes)

lol :D. Though as far as names go they're not bad at all. I suppose you got lucky huh!

I don't usually change FF names.
The only exception was Ramza, a few times in Tactics I use my first name....because I consider Ramza one of my heroes.
I also use my real name as the main hero in some of the Ogre battle games.

I had another called Lavyn lol :)

As for mine:

Vivi- Jawa
I forget her name off the top of my head, but she was this bird like creature in FF IX. Well anyway, I named he Babaya.
Steiner- Otto & Rusty.

FFIV
Cecil- Wolf
Kain- Lief
Edward- Whimpy (well he was!)

FFVIII
Squall- Ardyn
Rinoa- Lois
Her dog- Madrado
Ifrit- Anharet
Shiva- Cersie
Carbuncle- Zebaree
Quezacotel- Hamton
Leviathan- Malken
The Brothers- High 'n' Low

You most definitely can rename the main characters in FFVII (usually when they first join your party). Cloud you can rename within a minute or two of actually starting the game (although he's known by the pseudonym of 'EX-SOLDIER' in the one battle on the train station platform before then). Once you select a choice though you can't change it - you're stuck with that name for the rest of the game (although, having said that, you can hack the game's data in the PC version with a save file trainer, although I usually can't be bothered :p).

As for why they changed it in Crisis Core, most likely it's because of the fact that there is voice overs where the character's default name is mentioned by NPCs repeatedly as part of the storyline, which would be impossible if the player was allowed to rename the main character. Sadly it's a price that has to be paid for having fully voiced cutscenes.

So what did you name the Warrior of Light? I can think of plenty (some not very complimentory....well he is an insufferable goody-two-shoes)

Well, he IS a paragon of light and justice after all. :p It goes with the territory. ;)

Seriously though, to be honest, all four player characters in FFI are all 'Warriors of Light' who are usually identified by whatever Job class you chose for them - the Dissidia version however is essentially a metaphor for the player's entire party (based on Amano's original artwork for the game). But anyway, answering your question, if I remember rightly, I usually went with a 'Fighter/Red Mage/White Mage/Black Mage' party and named them as thus:

Fighter: Kye (after a reoccuring male lead who pops up in most of my stories I write)
Red Mage: originally I chose Greg on the NES version (after my older half-brother, and also a close friend of the same name). For the later remakes though, I went with Aberdeen (after a Red Mage of the same name in a friend's fanfic (aka, Deathshead on these forums ;)).
White Mage: Enki (naturally ;))
Black Mage: I went with Orko, after the character of the same name from the old 80's cartoon He-Man originally, who resembles the FF Black Mage closely. In the later remakes however I went with good ol' Vivi - Orko's FFIX counterpart. ;)

Most other FF games I just stuck with default names as mentioned previously, although I did rename Dagger back to Garnet in FFIX using the Namingway card in disc 4 though, as I like the name Garnet. :)

Enki???? :D Like you said 'naturally'.
As for Aberdeen! lol :) I've read about some of those exploits of his. DH's work is great.

Yeah, I agree Garnet is a sweet name. It suits her.

Haha I did that with Quezacotl once, he was named Quezacot, which I actually think sounds quite good! :D

I used to name my characters after friends when I was a kid, but nowadays I leave them by default.

That being said, on a relatively recent run on FF8, I named Squall "Emo", Rinoa "Ome" and Angelo "Moe" :p

Also quite a few years back I kept all the FF7 characters by default but Aerith, I named her Rodney for kicks, it was so funny when they reminisce about her on Disc 2 and I completely forgot I renamed her!

All this reminds me of a quote from POC; I definitely include myself in this jibe :) :

Gibbs: Look alive, and keep a weather eye! Not for naught it's called Shipwreck Island, where lies Shipwreck Cove and the town of Shipwreck.
Pintel: You heard him. Step lively!
Jack: For all that pirates are clever cobs, we are an unimaginative lot when it comes to naming things.
Gibbs: Aye.
Jack: I once sailed with a geezer lost both of his arms and part of his eye.
Gibbs: And what'd you call him?
Jack: Larry.

In the good old days of FF1/NES we were limited to 4 letter for each character, and there were no default names. I named my black mage Bobo, and invariably the same name gets applied to black mages in all titles nowadays (or a character is selected with the Bl. Mage Job as his destiny) or to any frail, secretive, and powerful magic-user
