I wish Final Fantasy didn't have a number reserved for 11 and 14. Since they are practically MMO's and completely different from the others, they should have been named more differently. Something like Final Fantasy Online and Final Fantasy Online 2 would've sufficed.

Just because they're games in which you interact with other people doesn't exclude them from counting as numbered titles. Learn from my mistakes and give them a chance. Well, XI anyhow. XIV doesn't look too promising.

Well I didn't say anything to discredit the games themselves, I just believe that they should have had their own series compared to the other single-player Final Fantasy games.

I understand, and I do respect your opinion, but I think the company tried to do something different with each title and bringing one or two of them to a broader spectrum such as the internet shouldn't discount them as valid parts of the series. After all, none of the games (save for spinoffs and prequels and sequels etc.) are related, just numbered as they come along (and don't let that darn US numbering system fool ya~). Besides, it doesn't mean a thing what a game's name may be; the content is what matters.

But to contribute to the topic, I wish Final Fantasy games didn't have . . . one ditsy female character. Or any for that matter. That means buh-bye Krile, Relm, Yuffie, Selphie, Eiko, and Vanille. Except Rikku from X, she's not so bad.

Oh gawd, not another one of these 'FFXI isn't a proper FF title because it's online' threads. For Altana's sake, it's Square Enix's intellectual property - they can name it whatever they want.

Even though FFXI is an online game, it still has the features of a 'normal' (single player) FF title - regular FF monsters (like tonberries, malboros, cactaurs etc), the Job system, a deep and intricately woven storyline, summons, the elemental crystals, etc etc. And, speaking of the storyline, as a part of the game's plot, the main antagonists are so strong (literally, gods), that a small ragtag group of angsty teens is nowhere near strong enough to save Vana'diel from destruction - a much larger force is needed to get the job done. So Square Enix are fully entitled to name it as such.

And before you pass judgement, FFXII effectively reused FFXI's battle system and adapted it to a single-player setting anyway (in fact, FFXII reused a lot of things from FFXI). So your arguement falls flat on this point alone.

I'm sorry if I sounded like I'm having a go at you, but I'm very passionate about FFXI and become rather zealous when defending it. :p

Once again, Enkidoh hits the nail on the head dead-center.

I feel your passion for FFXI, but all the numbered Final Fantasy games were single-player RPG's, and FFXI broke away from this simple tradition. I believe for that reason alone, FFXI deserved a more unique title under the FF franchise.

Square doesn't seem to mind now about their naming choices, seeing as we already have a few games offset from the numbered series such as Crystal Bearers and Crystal Chronicles.

FFXI's official title is Final Fantasy XI Online. Just because it's not a single player RPG doesn't detract from the fact that SE themselves, had it in the numbered series. Personally, I feel that SE saw the success Blizzard was having with World of Warcraft as well as other companies which have made MMO's, and thought to get themselves a slice of the proverbial pie. They could've called it Final Fantasy Online, but at the time they had no other FF titles under production and the masses were wanting another FF so they made a MMO and named it as the eleventh installment in the series.

As Enkidoh stated, Final Fantasy XII recycled the battle system from FFXIO, altered it for FFXII etc. Final Fantasy XIV is recycling the battle system of Final Fantasy XIII for itself as well.

rkmx52 while you have your own opinion, others have theirs and may/do not agree with yours.

What DH said. Also check out this thread (Thread 72314) I made a while back, where DH and Enkidoh provided me with some valuable tips on the game that I never knew before. I once thought similarly; that FFXI was too different to be as good as the others. While I still haven't played it, my eyes have really been opened up. Educate yourself a little bit rkmx52, before making judgments.

That is, unless of course you've played XI already and are basing your opinion on that fact alone, but it doesn't seem that way.

Its almost like a series of great books, with an installment or two going straight to video, then back to print. Everything could still be as enjoyable, but watching a movie takes a lot more resources; i.e., electricity, tv, dvd player. That's more or less how I feel about online games. They're perfectly good ways to entertain you, but they do require a lot more from you; capable PC and internet connection, as well as a monthly fee. Not that I object to pay-to-play; paying your programmers is a good way to keep content fresh, bugs corrected, and expansions/sequels coming!

I'd also like to invite comparison to Warcraft. Warcraft 1-3 were undeniably great games IMO, but I would certainly not like to call WoW simply WC4. /shrug
