Hey guys, I was wondering what good RPG's are out on the PS3. I heard Dragon Age is pretty fun. Any suggestions as to what games are good. Particularly looking for the old feel of RPG gaming. Thank you in advance.

Seems like you're probably after western RPGs then?

I'm not sure if Demon's Souls is exactly what you're after (it's not really typically western or eastern), but it seems like the best RPG on the console to me. I haven't had the chance to play it yet because it only just released in Australia and it's still really expensive. Give it a look.

There's really not many other western RPGs on the console. You've got games like Fallout 3, Oblivion and Borderlands (I don't really like that game at all, but you might), I suppose.

If you're okay with Japanese RPGs, I'd go with either Disgaea 3 (whimsical story, extremely fast paced SRPG gameplay) or Valkyria Chronicles (awful story, kind of slow but tactical SRPG gameplay). You've got all the traditional type of jRPGs as well, but none of them really stand out to me, including FF13.

I like Japenese RPG's, preferably strategy style like Final Fantasy Tactics, or turn based style.

Well, both JRPGs I mentioned are strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics. Disgaea 3 has the same isometric style as FFT. Valkyria Chronicles sends you into a third person shooter mode when you move around your units. Both are really good, imo.

You could check out Resonance of Fate, too. I hear it's pretty flawed but passable if you're into the genre. I'm mostly interested in it because of this funny scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVibNKrp8sQ

I hear the battle system is pretty unique as well.

I recently played Disgaea 3 and it was pretty decent. The story rarely rises above 'Okay, I guess' but it is really, really funny. The music's just ace too, but then all Nippon Ichi games have great music.

The game itself played fairly well, but it was very easy indeed. There are tons of options and extra bits and bobs to do, which presumably power your characters up to ungodly levels, but I didn't find I needed any of that.

Demon's Souls however is a vastly different prospect. That is one tough game right there. Hardest game I've played, since Ninja Gaiden Black.

One of my mates is looking for a new PS3 RPG to move onto after FFXIII and I need a recommendation for him since I failed to name anything he would consider (Have yet to buy a PS3 so he ignored most of my rec's based on what I'd heard alone).

He's played Enchanted Arms and said it was alright but nothing great; same for FFXIII although better. Finally, he also dislikes SRPGs after I gave him an explanation of how Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles play.

Someone help me shut him up with a good game

There really aren't many great standard JRPGs on the PS3. The highest quality one right now, besides FF13, is probably Resonance of Fate.

eternal sonata is far better on the p3.
and wait for tales of... whatever, which is also gonna be superior with all the extras.

having said that, the other games people before mentioned are quite cool and are rpgs in the truest sense of the word (except, a little, ff13)

Cool, thanks everybody.

I've just bought a series of tactical JRPG's on ebay within the last two days, none of the PS3, but I heard good things about:

-Front Mission 3 (PS1)
-Valkyrie Profile (PS1)
-Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)

Also purchased RPG's:

-Star Ocean (PS1)

On a separate note, has anybody seen the new Vandal Hearts game released on the PSN or Xbox Live Arcade? It is a newly released tactical RPG, is that game any good? Looks pretty fun.

Try and get Star Ocean: The Second Story. It's much better. It was remade for PSP, if you've got one of those (so were Disgaea 1 and 2 and Valkyrie Profile). I have no idea what Vandal Hearts is like though.

Can't play games on the PSP; and I have Star Ocean: Second Story, I mentioned it already...

Thanks for the help people - should keep him off my back till he needs more games in a few months... hopefully longer if he plays slowly

Thumbs up for Disgaea as well MastaM. I only got ~15 hours in before I had to stop playing and focus on uni, but it's second in line for when I get back into serious gaming; and it's not first only because of the length of it.

Ravenous:
Your mate is the newest addition to the 'PS3 owners in search of decent RPGs' club. As was stated, there really isn't a hell of a lot out there.

Given that he already has Final Fantasy 13, I'd recommend Eternal Sonata, Dragon Age: Origins and Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

If he doesn't like Strategy RPGs, then that pretty much nukes the rest of the field.

Enjoying Demon's Souls quite a bit myself. Incredibly atmospheric game.

It should be pointed out though, that as ace as Demon' Souls is, it doesn't have much of a story at all, really. It's much more geared around the actual action and gameplay. The story is practically non-existant for most of the game.

I absolutely never had a problem with that. Demon's Souls is a terrific game.

I'm not saying it would be a problem. Demon's Souls is a great game, but it's important to make sure people know all the relevant facts.

Storyline based RPGs and action RPGs are sometimes two very different things. It's not like Mass Effect, KOTOR etc for example where there is a mix of story and action. DS is about 99% action.

As people have already pointed out before, Demon's Souls is a great game.

My brother rented it for a week and let me play it. I found it to be quite challenging.

You can always go for the classic Oblivion, if you have not already done so and, of course, and a new Fallout 3 Fallout: New Vegas are great choices.

Enchanted Arms is not the best RPG by any means, but it does offer a unique combat system and interesting story. It's not something to fall in love with, but if you are a hardcore RPG player, you might like it.

Rune Factory Tides of Destiny. I never played any of the other Rune Factory games (or Harvest Moon games) but from what I hear it is more action oriented than the other games.

3D Dot Game Heroes- if you consider Zelda games action RPG games, then this game is the closest you will get to play Zelda on PS3

Dark Souls- is not as good as Demon's Souls IMO. But nonetheless, it is still a good game.

Tales of Graces f- I have not finished it, but so far the game is very fun. I like the Tales battle system.

Star Ocean The Last Hope International- a lot of people overlook this game, I think it was fun to play and I also love the battle system of the Star Ocean series. The story is a little lacking but the game makes up for it.

I have played and beat Eternal Sonata on PS3, and yes it is better than the 360 version, they expand on the story and include Crescendo and Serenade as playable characters.

And then you have FFXIII and FFXIII-2.

I would say Dark souls all the way :D

I'm bummed out that the PS3 is lacking on epic RPGs. And well RPGs in general. Maybe this year we will see some good games.

Just to satisfy my craving for RPGs, I went and downloaded FF7 and FF8 from the PSN store... Classics. :)

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has been getting some RAVE reviews thus far, and that makes me REALLY hopeful.

Level 5 + Studio Ghibli = Great game play with fanatic graphics and good characters.

Though I'm not sure if the overall story is going to be anything noteworthy.

Eternal Sonata I think is the only one that I have played, but I really enjoyed it none the less. Definitely recommend it.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ReMIX is out right now. (Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix, Re:CoM, and 358/2 Days [the last one is a collection of action and text cutscenes not a full game])

Sorry for this bump.
