Hello everyone! For the past few months, I have been working on a YouTube channel that (like many others) features uploads of some of my favorite pieces of video game music. I wanted to create this thread to share it with you and elicit your thoughts, feedback, criticisms and suggestions.

To be brief, there are two general goals that I have in mind for my channel that I hope will make it stand out. The first goal is to, at least in the context of YouTube, provide videos with high quality audio; all of the videos will be available in 720p and the audio files that go into the videos will be of the best quality that I can find. The videos will only have still images with no flashy introductions, annotations, pop up comments or anything else that would detract from the music.

The second goal I have in mind is to try to highlight music from some of the more obscure, western, or modern game soundtracks that many game music enthusiasts may overlook. While I also love music from the "classics" (Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mega Man, Sonic, Metroid, Chrono Trigger/Cross, etc.) and will occasionally upload it, I'm hoping that more people will come to appreciate music from the likes of Osmos, Plants vs. Zombies, the PixelJunk games, the Bit.Trip games, the Sam & Max games and some of the more recently established franchises (Forza, Uncharted, etc.) as well. Instead of "competing" with other already existing game music channels, I hope that this emphasis will help the channel to serve as a complimentary source to what is already out there.

I'm very open to suggestions on music that I should look into, particularly if they focus on game soundtracks that you think deserve more recognition; I would also be happy to discuss other YouTube channels (including your own) that share video game music. I plan on updating the channel regularly, so coming up with more material would never hurt :)

To start, here are three links that I hope you enjoy:

1) Trample Machine (from Another Bound Neo): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7PlqurqNtk&fmt=22

2) Coventina Orchestral (from Super Stardust HD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfx7oFoV_W4&fmt=22

3) Transition (from Bit.Trip Beat): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61wxyfOlnj0&feature=related&fmt=22

Nice idea. I've been waiting for someone on youtube to do this :) I subscribed.

If you want to discuss more ideas, I'd be happy to oblige. I've got more than a few stories to share myself :D

Thank you for the support, Smarty; feel free to share your stories here.

Just in case anyone is interested, here are links to two of my most recent uploads:

So first of all tell me if you have some sort of time period of games you have in mind. I didn't watch (more like listen) all the videos but most of them were from games that are relatively new. Are you making some sort of distinction among certain generations of gaming or are you just randomly uploading good music?

Nert
07-01-2010, 06:58 PM
Sure thing. I'm not setting hard boundaries per se, but I'm hoping to focus mainly on songs from within the past decade or so. A lot of other video game music channels on YouTube concentrate heavily on music that plays to nostalgia, music from the 8-bit and 16-bit era, and music from a lot of classic franchises. I don't have any problem with this, but I'm hoping to avoid doing too much of that so people will not see this channel as redundant.

Other than that, I'm trying to keep the channel's selection as varied as possible. iPhone games, XBLA/PSN/WiiWare games, PC games, Indie games, free flash games, console games and handheld games are all fair game when I'm looking for great soundtracks. I'm open to any genre as well, be it rock, ambient, electronic, classical, metal, rap, or w/e. As long as the music works on levels beyond just triggering nostalgia and memories of having played a game, I'm interested!

Wow, thanks for all of the recommendations! After looking them over, we seem to have pretty similar tastes in soundtracks; I've posted some stuff from the Mass Effect series, the Guilty Gear series, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and Assassin's Creed 2 (Jesper Kyd is one of my favorite composers). I decided to revisit the Portal soundtrack after your post, and I decided to upload Subject Name Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCcRaVNLh2E&fmt=22

I'll probably be looking into the Castlevania games and the Sly Cooper games soon. Thanks again!

I tried to post this the other day, but had some problems. Anyway, what platform(s) is "Edge" for? I see the tags for iPhone and Ipod Touch in the video, but is that it? The music from it (Kakkoi! from your video specifically) is really catchy and I would like to try and find the rest of it.

Edge is an iPhone OS game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_(iPhone_game)

If you want, you can download the whole soundtrack for free at http://www.mobigame.net/edge/iphone/soundtrack

There are a lot of great tracks in there for sure.

It almost makes me want an iPhone. Thanks for the link to the soundtrack, though. Also, I have to say good job on the Youtube channel. I finally got around to listening to some of the other songs and have found a couple that I hadn't heard that were really good. I look forward to future installments.

Smarty

I recommend considering the following songs or others from the same game soundtrack for future installments:

Dearest Helena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4eRc1qXXUE) from Starcraft: Brood War
Zerg Theme 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__3eZfU8tjA&feature=related) from Starcraft: Brood War
The Tower of Dawn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui2IMl2BLnk&feature=related) from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
The Fragrance of Dark Coffee ~ Godot's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxzTrWUajZg) from Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
Distant Traces of Beauty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7FyOE4iIFo&feature=related) from Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
The Final Battle Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIomcObVIF0&feature=related) from Jak&Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (check out the other parts too, should be in the related videos section)
Pumping Station (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAYzl2T8TCs) from Jak II: Renegade
Haven City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL2B3xrt1tQ&feature=related) from Jak II: Renegade
Debriefing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr8WslV4cEw&playnext_from=TL&videos=VIzJnSfRa1k) from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

I'll leave it at that for now, so you don't get overwhelmed. I'll share more in time ;)

Thank you once again for all of the great suggestions, Smarty. I really dug that MGS 3 track! Also, like last time with Portal, your suggestion to look over the Prince of Persia SOT soundtrack prompted me to look over the series again, and I eventually uploaded Healing Ground from the 2008 game. That song is already fairly well known, but I'm a huge fan of it and figured that having a high quality/HD version of it up on YouTube wouldn't hurt.

Here are a few of my recent uploads:

1) Annul (from NeoToyko): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnnv3ksRzSg&fmt=22

2) The Gardens (from LittleBigPlanet): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-f58buxhWs&fmt=22

3) Finale (from Sin and Punishment: Star Successor): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU_H_HKuWrA&fmt=22

Some games that I plan on drawing from in the near future include Aquaria, Rez, Afterburner Climax, Civilization IV, Chibi Robo, Homeworld and Dino Run.

Also include Super Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy, excellent soundtracks, excellent games!

oh wait, those aren't overlooked games but oh well

Both Super Mario Galaxy games have gorgeous soundtracks, but you're right, they're pretty well covered; in fact, I'm pretty sure that the songs have already been uploaded in high quality on YouTube. I am subscribed to some other video game music channels and friends with many other users, and almost half of their recent interactions seem to be centered on SMG2.

On the other hand, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is something of a special case for me. Both the game itself and its soundtrack have already been widely praised and recognized, but with such a massive and varied selection of songs, some of my favorites seem to have been buried (attention wise). It's the only game that I've uploaded more than one song from so far, and it's probably one that I'll revisit again before too long.

My first two uploads have been Flat Zone 2 and Area 6. Flat Zone 2 is unlike almost any other electronic music I've heard and the Area 6 remix has a truly palpable energy and bombast to it.

Let's continue with the recommendations shall we :D (and yes Debriefing from MGS3 is beautiful)

Enmity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFxBeoBnAPE&feature=related) from Empire Earth. I really cannot recommend this soundtrack highly enough, go check it all out.
Institute Menu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woXJcw0iGIA) from Perfect Dark
Tristram Village (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8) from Diablo
Wilderness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM3aOF1T9qA) from Diablo II
Cinematic Suite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5MM7BsFdkI&feature=PlayList&p=BAD845F527212449&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=7) from Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos
Radio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG1gAur8TDM) from Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Silent Melody (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVeLOpD1xtU&feature=related) from inFAMOUS
Welcome to Rapture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEFIZh_Zscc) from Bioshock
Colossus Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx3ylHkTGDo&feature=related) from God of War II

Ok i'm going to subscribe i can come up with more suggestions if you like

i have another suggestion, from a very obscure Japan only SNES game with good music, Mickey Mouse no Tokyo Disneyland Daibouken you can find the SPC on zophar.net. Is that super obscure or what?! also grab the Famicom Disk System album and upload the song Pi Ro Ri, it's the start-up sound for the Famicom and was remixed in DDR Mario Mix (put that one up too), and get the Nintendo Sound Selection Luigi B-side album from the forums and put up Po Pi Pa Pi from Mario Artist Talent Studio,a game for 64DD. Also i saw your avatar on Youtube of Mr. Game & Watch and kudos to you for that! He's the coolest character along with Mario! Speaking of Game and Watch, put Game Boy Gallery Musics, Game and Watch Gallery 4 and Flatzone 2 from SSBB oh and Flatzone from SSBM oh you already have Flatzone 2, my bad oh and put the Mariokart 64 On Club Circuit album it's remixes of Mariokart 64 tunes. I want to rate this thread 5 stars!!

I recently uploaded a large chunk of videos to hit #100 before I take an uploading break for the next several days; for the playlist 81-100, I made more of an effort to have the songs flow into each other more logically (especially after song 86 or so). Now that I've gone through a lot of my planned content, I'll be looking for some new ideas, so keep the suggestions and discussion going.

Some personal highlights from the recent uploads:

Stage 1 (Trash Panic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz-nlkYWt48&fmt=22

Potential for Anything (VVVVVV): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSe_fiTP8qE&fmt=22

Volcanic Islands (After Burner Climax): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjj67Jn0iFo&fmt=22

Sailing on the Wind (Flower): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsB2outf6Go&fmt=22

Dino Run Theme (Dino Run): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Pnapg8NG8&fmt=22

Edit: You just posted two of my favorite tracks from the Mass Effect series, Smarty. Along with the first version of Uncharted Worlds, I might get all of those up on the list some day. I also had Welcome to Rapture on the old version of my channel, and I plan to find a higher quality version of it soon; we must have really similar tastes.

Silent Melody is the credit song. You should check out some of the others. I definitely recommend: Rabble Rouser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki71pm8yDKI), Genesis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7Ouhx8LSF0&feature=related), The Truth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLgHRvalU40&feature=related) and End of the Road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EBQ56QjpYw&feature=related).

Can't wait to see you upload more stuff :D

i was thinking of doing the same. I was working on soundtracks for a few rare games and put them on youtube. I noticed I have 80% of all the songs used in Geist on the Gamecube with nobody that made a gamerip, except I recorded a few songs. Most songs are yuck, but it has 2-3 nice songs.

You know the TC pretty much does exactly as I do.
When uploading soundtracks, nearly all the time, the song a 320 kbps MP3, and the video is usually 720p (I could even do 1080p, but I doubt that'd make much of a difference). Unfortunately, IMO, even at 720p, the sound quality seems to decrease ever so slightly. Also, like him, (or her), I only use still images.

Nert
07-12-2010, 07:16 PM
Ultimate Koopa, could you post a link to your channel here? I always like looking at what others have put together.

I'm still mostly on a break from uploading while I take care of some outside things, but I managed to get two new uploads up yesterday to tide people over.

Lost Relevancy from Crackdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNTBwyBUn44&fmt=22

More Gun from Team Fortress 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVUwuUvpl_k&fmt=22

Games that I plan on selecting music from in the near future include Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (if I can find a high quality source), inFAMOUS, Torchlight, Trauma Team, Cave Story, Shenmue, Knytt Stories, DDR Mario Mix and Trine.

The Ultimate Koopa
07-13-2010, 11:59 PM
Well most of my uploads are Mario-related (obviously), and some of them are special extended mixes that no one has ever done before (or at least haven't uploaded them to YouTube) -- that is, most people upload an extended mix as the song over and over again, for example:
[song] -- there's the normal song
[song][song][song][song][song][song] -- people will upload this, as "extended version"
[xsxoxnxgx] -- notice how, rather than the whole song being repeated, the whole song just has extra parts added (usually consisting of maybe sections played twice instead of once, channel muting and other methods), and this is what I call an "extended version".

Another game I highly recommend checking out is Crush for the PSP. It was a unique and intuitive puzzle game with a very atmospheric soundtrack. I couldn't find any of teh music on youtube (I was actually planning to upload them myself since I have them in really good quality). You should really try and find the music for this game. If you can't let me know, since I have it all. I'll upload it somewhere.

I'm really fond of Lost Relevancy btw... :D

I apologize for being light on the uploads lately; starting tonight, I'm going to get back on a more consistent schedule (well, after I go see Inception). I'm hoping to maintain at least two uploads a day, provided that I don't think that what I'm uploading is redundant or obvious.

Here's some food for thought:

A Stealthy Approach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-wmLU8lASE) from Sly Cooper
The Harsh Wasteland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ayqnVRWIk&feature=PlayList&p=55C6CFF5C350AB98&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=35) from Jak 3
Metropolis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D60HTdBckxM) from Ratchet and Clank
The Opened Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFL2zPc2uk) from Shadow of the Colossus
Elfsong Tavern (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNDZUZKhwRE&feature=related) from Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
A Rocky Start (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHOEpLqiPHM) from Sly Cooper
Heavenly Flight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vamr7qq6hoA) from Dragon Quest VIII
Blackwater City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvS5TWTKHjg) from Ratchet and Clank

You know recommending music like this has given me a pretty good excuse to replay many of the classics in the glorious PS2 library.

Yeah, Inception did end up sidetracking me a bit; what a movie! :D

I did upload four videos this weekend, though. They include "Street Fighting" from Valkyria Chronicles, "Underground Mozart" from Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, "Anything for Trish" from inFAMOUS and "Town" from Torchlight. I'm still struggling to find an acceptable version of the Advance Wars: Days of Ruin soundtrack, which is a bummer because I've been hankering to get some techno back up on the channel for a while now.

Thanks again to everyone who's been writing up suggestions; as this batch of uploads should show, I'll look into what you recommend.

Edit: Oh right... forgot the links.

Underground Mozart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpB-Ycc4U8I&fmt=22

Edit #2: I'll be reuploading "Spectra 1" from Art Style light trax now that someone has posted a link to a higher quality version of the sound file. It seems to still be my most popular video, so I just thought that I'd let people know.

I took a break from uploading to the standard channel today to kick off a more specific channel: IndieGameMusicHD (I'll resume updates for VGMHQ tomorrow). This channel will be used for posting entire soundtracks from indie games with music that I enjoy, particularly if I think that if the quality of other uploads on YouTube isn't where I'd like to see them (or if the game's soundtrack isn't represented at all). The first soundtrack I've uploaded in full is that of Art Style light trax; I highly recommend listening to "Whiteplan," as it's incredibly soothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfOaCsg2s98&fmt=22

I will still continue to post selections from indie game soundtracks on VGMHQ as well; I like being able to act as a filter of sorts by highlighting standout tracks.

I apologize for the lack of content lately; a lot of things have been popping up. I did manage to upload "Bloomy Girls" last night; while this Takagi Masakatsu piece wasn't created for Lumines II, I thought it was used wonderfully.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWdY7yEZAoE&fmt=22

Now that I've gotten some more content on the channel, I figured it'd be appropriate to give this thread a quick bump. Trauma Team, Demon's Souls, Red Faction Guerilla, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Half Minute Hero, Gravity Well, Starcraft II, Rez, and Civilization IV: Warlords are among the games that I have recently mined, and I hope to have more content coming soon.

Due to computer issues, I wont be able to get anything else onto the channel for another two days, unfortunately. I do have a few games in mind that I want to draw from soon, including Uplink: Hacker Elite, WoW: Cataclysm, and Empire Earth, provided that I'm able to find high quality versions of those soundtracks in the near future.

If anyone on this site hasn't yet heard the orchestrated theme from the latest Professor Layton game, I highly recommend giving it a listen: YouTube - VGMHQ #119: Theme of the Unwound Future (Professor Layton and the Unwound Future) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sblMhgPlUjU&fmt=22)

If, on the other hand, you want to try something completely different and bizarre, see if you can stomach this song from Chulip: YouTube - VGMHQ #120: Happy Shabby Life (Chulip) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Dea4C6k-I&fmt=22)

(I enjoy its oddness quite a bit, but I can see how it'd be repulsive to some)

As a final quick note, I've finally reached over 1,000 views on a single video. In the grand scheme of YouTube, that's pretty insignificant, but it's a fun little milestone for me regardless. Thanks for the support and suggestions, everyone!

Here are some more suggestions to consider:

Ratchet and Clank 3- Courtney Gears Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P3-KiQVDxg) (not sure if that's the official title)
Shadow of the Colossus - Counterattack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwQm9Cm9y4A&feature=related)
God of War 2 - The Isle of Creation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L09rqYVFxTk)
Persona 4 - The Almighty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8-hwqAN_Ls) (or any other track from the soundtrack really, this particular one is just my favorite)

I haven't been on here lately but I have more suggestions for the channel. How about music from the games featured in SSBB? not the music in SSBB but the games that go with it. Not the well-known games like Super Mario Bros. or Zelda but the more obscure games. Maybe some NES/Famicom. One example of a more obscure Famicom game (Japan only) is Famicom Grand Prix 2:3D Hot Rally. You may want to consider it. Oh and put some Game & Watch Gallery on there especially Game Boy Gallery Musics Arranged. It's arrangements of music from the Game & Watch Gallery games. Speaking of arrangements, put Mario Kart 64 On Club Circuit on your channel. Good stuff!

Memora De la stona (ff11 opening) because the online games are to a different market and the music was hidden in a less popular soundtrack compared to previous games.

Airship from ff11. For the same reason as above plus people like airship themes.

The Blue Dragon song because it was never featured on a soundtrack and no one has ever heard of it.

I just wanted to thank everyone that provided me with feedback and suggestions when I first started this channel up. At this point, I'm on track to have roughly 100,000 views by the year's end; as long as I continue to have free time, I'll continue these shenanigans, so feel free to let me know if you have any other ideas!

I just hit upload #200: Reset (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHuocseVqfs&hd=1) from Okami. It's easily one of my all time favorite compositions, so please check it out if you haven't heard it yet!

I'm currently updated the NeoGAF thread and I'm in the process compiling a comprehensive spreadsheet for this project. Thread can be found here: VGMHQ: YouTube Channel with Modern and Somewhat Overlooked Video Game Music - NeoGAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=409253)
