This is a thread about ethnic music.

Currents of music should be one thing that every culture around the world has, so I think it would be a great thing to share all our ethnic music styles no matter where we're from or what we believe in.

So in this thread feel free to post all of your ethnic music composers, orchestral compositions, pop music that incorporates ethnic elements.

Basically any music ranging from the magical sounds of Persian music, the mysterious sounds of Indian Music, the wild nature of African music, the joyful sounds of Caribbean music, or the melodious sounds of Chinese music...and any ethnic style from the world.

NO DL LINKS !!!

ACCEPTABLE:

Youtube Video Links (and other video sites) , Music Streams, Sites Hosting Music, Radio Blogs... and similar.

For an overview of all in the thread read the second post.

I think this is an exquisite idea for a thread.

Let's kick it off with a little Angelique Kidjo :)

edit -
I found a better quality video :)

that song has a lot of spirit and optimism I like it : ) wombo lombo hehe xD

I recently 've been listening to a lot of songs that have an instrument called the dulcimer (hammered):

Pretty Interesting Solo that has some medieval feeling to it:

I love the dulcimer. I also love when Blue Man Group plays with it.

^ I also found a better video of Wombo Lombo :)

Here's a little something else. I don't care for the video at all, but the song sounds catchy.

Once I have normal internet access again I can contribute a good bit to this thread, I think. In the meantime I'd like to just go on a little rant:

I hate the term "World Music". I associate it with arrogant idiots trying to appear 'cultured' - holier-than-thou college music professors who think they're so sophisticated because they notice when a pop song has a caribbean beat - who are too busy "appreciating" music to actually enjoy it. To me it's like saying "I drive a Toyota. Did you know they're made in Japan?!" and expecting people to think more highly of you for it.

I realize most people use it as an innocent synonym for ethnic, folk, traditional, etc, basically anything with an ethnic tinge, it just conjures irritating memories in my mind. :P

well I do kind of agree, though nothing against the terminology. Just somehow I see have a rant myself against the term as well: I think World Music should be well...

Like a potpourri mix of all styles, more like a "freestyle" but then again freestyle was taken by a latin electronic movement so it's too late. lol

I prefer Ethnic or Ethno as a term for the music :)

As for updates please give me some time I really want to get active on this thread sometime soon. Just not done with piano classes and certain other things on my mind : )

well ttyl :D

You all should listen to Herbie Hancock's latest album called "The Imagine Project". It has so many styles from many cultures. If you like fusions into the realm of world music then this is the album for you. One of my favorite tracks is called The Song Goes On. It features Anoushka Shankar on sitar and even Herbie's longtime collaborator, Wayne Shorter, offers his awesome saxophone solos. It perfectly blends both music from India and jazz. The production values are high and the quality and creativity of the tracks are outstanding. It is definitely one of the best albums of the year for me.

You can find samples on www.herbiehancock.com

Here is an excellent three part compilation I came across of folk metal and related genres. I have albums by most of these bands that I can send if you're interested in hearing more:

And a short compilation I enjoyed for its more eastern approach. Most of these bands are Slavic, and more on the pagan/black metal side of the spectrum:

And here's a video of Troll Gnet El', who I think would be ridiculously fun to see live:
