Enjoyed what I did hear. However it does feel like it could maybe use more length?
Not sure really, not much to judge... Is the one in the link part of another song or just a stand-alone track?

Actually more like a short intro, im planning on working on longer ones ( 2-5 min ) but at the moment, since im pretty busy with work ill do them a bit later. : )

I have a new one started, though I want to make every song 15 seconds longer than the one before it : D so that the last will be a good lenght

this album isvery relative to my learning of many musical concepts and is an opening for me so im really happy you like it :)

A song I did back when I was 17. I used nothing but Babya Logic Pro which is a freeware to build the Midi Rythm, after what I used a free version of mixcraft trial (legit!) and then used free audacity to record the sound : DDD ah the old days :3

You're welcome!

What I believe in is that you get better every time you compose, no matter how often, you will always get better and better. Just continue to listen to many different types of music and experiment with many different emotions, styles, and feelings. I believe you should compose as often as possible, just believe in yourself that you can do it! And learn as much as you can. (even if it's your hobby.) You never get anywhere without learning.
Anything and everything can inspire you! learn every single day, it doesn't matter what it is.

I'm looking forward to more!

Hey, it doesn't matter as long as you are saying something relevant to the post. Who's going to see it if you just edit you post? Unless it still bumps the post up. (it doesn't from what I see in forums.)

hehe true, I have to say though that at that moment I was driven emotionally to send the link here as fast as I could. so i made a post mechanically and without thinking :p might be a bit foolish just like the spirit of the song itself. Im continuing to work on the next one ( which was supposed to be a third) it should be something different ^_^

The two piano ones are very nice. Keep at it. Wasn't too big on the third one, but if you slowed it down and made it work on a piano it would probably be good.

This is a composition I made that is very experimental with not much usage of common ethique.I just made what I wanted here. Not much editing other than equalization. Used mostly average, bad quality vst. but it should be enjoyable if you give it a try.

Then again, I kind of stopped making strictly piano compositions. So I hope it does fit here.

how kind of you :) well I started out music as a joke pretty much, back in 2004 I think. I was really in love with metal, guitars, guitar solos etc. I pretty much practiced guitar without any knowledge of theory until 2008, (though I did get classes without much usage of them; only my latest classes were truely insightful)

I got impressed by watching piano videos on youtube (dot) com and I though: "heck why not me?" so I started listening to some game music in 2009 around February and practicing. and each time i learned something I saw music in a different way ( i guess that's how it should be : S ) whatever so then in 2010 i got more real lessons, started learning abstract theoretic concepts which helped me build something ( though it's a relative short body, of short works; lol )

and this summer i taught myself to use recording programs for music etc ( in order to go for a more orchestral sound )

but yes, if i get more time for composing, and more skill I'm planning on sheet music etc. definitely

cheers.

Wow. These were all VERY good if you ask me. My favorites would have to be the first one and the Four Autumns in Paris (reminded me of the song Eyes On Me from Final Fantasy VIII :D). I'd definitely would like them to be longer though but I know the feeling of having that writer's block. I make my own music as well and there's a few songs that I can't seem to finish because I just don't know what to add lol.

I know this is an old thread but still had to comment :). And that escapade song is pretty...interesting. I know I could totally work with that and add some drums and a little electric guitar ;). I was totally hearing it in my head while listening lol

Hehe, thanks! Well I guess as long as you have images in your mind while composing.. Then nothing can stop you from achieving any sound you want to get to.

As for the lenght, I guess you're right.. They could be longer.. I guess I have a limited knowledge of chords, but the one chords I do use, I know pretty well I guess, that's why my songs don't have much modulation and avoid harmony instead focusing on some melody that keeps going in ascending fashion ( give or take the second compo )

I've tried studying harmony but I guess I'm being lazy, instead focusing "arranging" (gotta use musical terms :p , to keep the spirit up ) ; my room lol. Dunno, does it happen for you too? You know.. One day you have this block of new ideas that pops in... And the other you feel like you've exausted all the potential, and it's now time to procrastinate... doing nothing? ( pretty much) Happens to me the whole time, which is kinda sad lol..

I'm a university student, btw, so I didn't really stop composing, it's just the year's weight is forcing me to focus much more on my studies than i'd want to :p

thanks for the comment

ps: I added a composition I made awhile ago here...

This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy7yAy7xtqA ( you can find them all at the top)

It's not really piano but I guess since I closed down that old account it's the last one that will appear in this thread. ( It's not something too epic, give or take the title :p But I think if you give it a chance you might like some idea, like the metallic sound in which I totally went overboard. ( long live the anvil :p )

IDX

Yes I've felt that too. I managed to finish one of my songs after procrastinating for about 3 years (my band tried to work with what I had, but it just didn't sit very well with me) but now I have finally finished it. My only regret is not being able to record an actual drummer playing drums to it so I had to use a program that allowed me to make the drums myself (and it was VERY time consuming). It sounds fake but it's a lot better with the drums than without.

Here's the song: IDX Rider - Revamped (Title in Progress) - SoundCloud (http://soundcloud.com/idx-rider/revamped-title-in-progress)

Needs bass guitar though :(. Due to the lack of it, I just used a different guitar effect for the bassline. But out of the list of projects I'm working on, this one is pretty much done. There is a more heavier song I'm working on but now I plan on making it a little less heavy so it has room for different guitar effects besides it being all just straight distortion (kinda like this one) but having that writer's block there though :(.

But keep up the good work because I'd like to hear more :D!

It's a really cool song, it has a lot of " MIST " feeling... Would be a great title.. :D at least that's the word that comes to mind... ( I think I played too much final fantasy 12 though, so you know... :p ) ... oh and and love the pause! :D ( I'm certain there is a famous song using rests like that, but then I can't recall much... )

Which program do you use for all the work?

For drums I guess a little EQ would do the work, depending on how the signal is received you can make the drums sound right,, look up "sidechaining". It's more of a trance/techno technique, but I think it's connected to this a bit. If you know how to work with it at least, wonderful effects can be reached; trance is wonderful way to learn softwares as their a bit easier to make and often involve percussion and all of the processes like Dynamics, Compression and so on... But it's almost exclusively made on fruity loops Id give a guess.

Oh btw, you said you miss bass...

I guess if you don't have any VST compatible software atm, you could try Vision in older softwares;; to learn the process ( prior to using VST, VISION doesn't have that but was used by the likes of HITOSHI SAKIMOTO himself! ) reminds me how soundforge is also pretty old;; lol but teaches processes wonderfully..

Then again if you want to handle vst's you could always use a beta version of acoustica mixcraft as a "trial/demo" which would revert no capacity to export as mp3... But you could do that by Using Stereo/Mix Recording on Audacity, then export in mp3 using the lame.dll file. Also mixcraft will give you a surprise if you check it out. Personally it was my starting software a couple of months ago. ( short experience yea <_< ) ( pretty useful with CPU shorton RAM)

If I wasn't really trying to learn production.. I guess I would have stayed with it before venturing into Cubase, but indeed great stepping stone.

take care

I'd much rather everything being played by hand. I just don't know that many people but I know someone who said they'll record the bassline for me. Just haven't talked to him about it since. And I use Ableton to make the drums and Sony Acid to record the guitars and import the drum track and mix and master everything.

ultima_tales
10-05-2010, 04:59 PM
I see. Well by hand its tough, wish ya luck.. Unless you're dream theater and have a "night in the studio" :p ( they just never stop impressing me)

I think that the main problem in recording stereo audio instead of midi is how audio just always turns up "loaded" with too much white noise, even though you would want to avoid that... but,, according to the handy/dandy guide of music production and Bob Dylan himself; one should avoid "loading the sound with noise"... though it kind of seems that the answer to that is having the biggest recording studios and platinum recording microphones... how fair is that? you tell me : D

IDX
10-05-2010, 06:58 PM
Well all I have to do to record my music is plug my guitar amp into the POD that came with my Ableton software and that would go directly into the USB port of my computer. Now I don't hear any white noise doing this but if I used a microphone to record the sound, then it will almost always be there. The other guitarist in my old band asked if I could get rid of the noise if he records his guitar parts using the mic on his mp3 player but that's going to be impossible. There is this studio by my place but it's relatively small. I was planning on having my friend listen to my drum track and then pay for him to go there and record himself doing it (or if he wanted, make some alterations to it) but there isn't any room but the lyrics for that song are being written and I'll just have to go there to record vocals because I don't have a mic of my own :(.

ultima_tales

Ya mics can be costly... Well most people use a combo of 2x or 4x microphones when their recording live concerts. That's if you're stationed on an average band concert. Bands like U2 and Dream Theater have microphones, pretty much everywhere around the stage. Most people use the Shure SM57 when their going cheap. And i'm relatively sure it can be used for a variety of usages like Orchestras and so on. But then you need those large digital mixing boards.. and those don't seem too cheap :S Good fortune though, there are these new external audio cards that support 4 - 8 channels around 300 bucks I think maybe even less by now.

For voice recording, im pretty sure you have the option of two things:
either get a mixer ( more tweakable, harder to use though )
or get a preamp ( this is usually recommended, but I find it pointless to go for the simple thing)

That's if your on funds, if not, get both and connect them to the Soundcard. ( still a dream for me, haha ) If you use a desktop, then don't buy external cards. (their used more often for piano I think, but that depends,, again im totally unsure on this either :p ) ( though in that case you buy an internal sound card like the m-audio emu: you'll need a mixer badly )
Then the mics I'd go by two brands ( still need to get one though :p ) either Behringer or MXL... around 60 - 100 bucks models provide good sound for voice.
Though since I guess you'd want a guitar use microphone with some support for drums, then this one is the way to go: Buy Sennheiser E609 Silver Dynamic Guitar Microphone | Dynamic Microphones | Musician's Friend (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-e609-Silver-Dynamic-Guitar-Microphone?sku=276668) It should be the best for the price range right now.

Then again the more you wait, the better they get. Reminds me I gotta start keeping money from my pockets in one place... : D

IDX

Yeah, the mics you see on stage in front of amps and the drums are used to play the sound through those giant speakers on stage. So technically, you don't HAVE to use them when recording music but in a lot of cases, that's how studios record; using mics. Although if I did have the funds, I'd definitely by everything to set up a home studio. But that will cost a WHOLE lot of money if you want the good stuff but as for right now, I'm happy with the fact that I can at least record music to where it will sound clear in quality compared to using an mp3 microphone (that's how we did it before I got my recording software).

And quick question, how do you record your music? And are you using a keyboard or piano? Sounds to me like an actual piano but I could be wrong lol

ultima_tales
10-06-2010, 07:15 PM
I used a Virtual Instrument a friend lent to me, "Nexus 1.41" But those recording are kind of old + by now there are so many amazing pianos like Galaxy Vintage D Steinway or Synthogy Ivory... I got my hands on Akoustik Piano by Native INstruments. Which is also pretty old but more decent to record a realistic feeling. Alas, my computer needs more RAM so it's hard to record lately. : ( And I wont likely get anything until Xmas, if Santa dares be generous on his visit : D
